Rangers overcome defensive woes to beat League One Alloa in Premier Sports Cup

Albania international Nedim Bajrami opened the scoring for the Light Blues in the 13th minute with a terrific finish but the visitors sensationally levelled after 25 minutes when Gers keeper Liam Kelly's attempted clearance in a goalmouth melee cannoned off Light Blues midfielder Joe Rothwell and into his own net.
Gers debutant Emmanuel Fernandez restored the home side's lead three minutes later with a header and in the 67th minute substitute James Tavernier added a third with a penalty
Scott Taggart reduced the deficit with 10 minutes remaining only for Gers substitute Findlay Curtis to restore the two-goal advantage in the last minute.
It was a good workout for those players who needed minutes on the park but now boss Russell Martin, still trying to grasp the high demands of being the Rangers boss since arriving in the summer, will have noted the poor goals conceded as he starts preparing to host Belgian side Club Brugge in the first leg of the Champions League play-off on Tuesday.
Despite reaching the play-off with a 4-2 aggregate win over Viktoria Plzen, the 2-1 defeat in the second leg in the Czech Republic during the week brought another fresh wave of criticism for the former Southampton boss.
As expected, he rang the changes with only defender Nasser Djiga retained from the trip to the Czech Republic.
There was a debut for Mikey Moore, the 18-year-old attacker who received his international clearance on his loan move from Tottenham, and Fernandez, signed from Peterborough this summer.
The home side, captained by Liam Kelly, took instant control.
Moore had a couple of efforts beaten away by Alloa goalkeeper Liam McFarlane before he laid the ball off to Bajrami, who took a touch and curled the ball in off the crossbar from the edge of the box.
The home side's lead was cancelled out in bizarre circumstances, which began when Djiga lost possession.
Steven Buchanan skipped by left-back Bailey Rice, his angled-drive was blocked by Kelly straight to Luke Rankin whose shot was stopped by Rothwell – perhaps by his arm.
However, when the ball got through to Kelly again, he thrashed it off the head of the prostrate Rothwell and the ball landed in the net, irking the home fans.
Rothwell's next contribution was more positive, however, slinging in a free-kick from the right for Fernandez to head in from eight yards.
McFarlane made good saves from Gers attacker Danilo, Djiga and Bajrami before club captain Tavernier came on to replace the injured Rice.
The second half continued along the same lines with Rangers attacking and Alloa defending and McFarlane made further saves from Danilo and Tavernier.
There was a VAR check when Alloa substitute Cameron O'Donnell stopped Oscar Cortes getting on to the loose ball when McFarlane parried another Bajrami drive.
Referee Daniel McFarlane checked his pitchside monitor and pointed to the spot, with Tavernier driving in off a post.
Thelo Aasgaard, the 23-year-old Norway midfielder signed from Luton, replaced Moore to make his Rangers debut, with Hamza Igamane and Connor also coming on for Rothwell and Danilo.
Alloa injected some tension into the game when Taggart tapped in from a yard after David Devine headed an O'Donnell free-kick off the crossbar.
But Findlay, on for Cortes, fired a low shot in off the far post to seal the win, but the Light Blues will be stress-tested to a greater degree by Club Brugge on Tuesday.

James Wilson has been reassured that he remains an important figure in Hearts' first-team squad despite dropping out of the starting line-up. Head coach Derek McInnes rates the teenage striker highly even though he remained an unused substitute in Saturday's Premier Sports Cup tie at St Mirren. Wilson started three out of Hearts' four group games in the competition last month, then featured as a second-half sub in the club's first two Premiership matches against Aberdeen and Dundee United. The weekend cup fixture lasted 120 minutes before penalty-kicks but Wilson did not make an appearance. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Elton Kabangu and Claudio Braga were Hearts' second-half attacking replacements as the visitors equalised through Oisin McEntee's header having trailed 1-0 at the interval. After 30 minutes of extra-time, the Edinburgh club lost 5-4 on penalties to complete a frustrating cup exit at the last-16 stage. Belgian striker Kabangu scored a hat-trick in Hearts' 8-1 closed-door friendly win over Ross County last week and then came on after 45 minutes in Paisley. McInnes explained his thinking to the Edinburgh News after leaving Wilson on the bench. 'I had thought about putting Wilson on but I knew Oisin was struggling and Harry Milne started to flag a bit [in extra-time],' he said. 'You need to be sure you don't use all your subs. James will be absolutely fine. We were mindful towards the end of players going down. Oisin went down with cramp, Harry came off with cramp, and we already used three subs at half-time including Beni [Baningime]. 'Oisin came off and we put Michael Steinwender to right-back. St Mirren played a box with one man and two No.10s above it. I thought we dealt with the game and were far more aggressive in that period. I enjoyed watching us up until the last wee bit. We need to show a bit more conviction, courage, belief, intent to go and get the winning goal - not just let it drift to penalties. Unfortunately, we've come out on the wrong end of it.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Scottish Premiership resumes with Motherwell match in Edinburgh Hearts' next match is this Saturday's Premiership encounter with Motherwell at Tynecastle Park. After beating Aberdeen and United in their opening two games, they will aim to continue a 100 per cent record and recover from the weekend's disappointment. 'It was a tough first half on Saturday, but I thought the second half was a different game and then, obviously, we had extra-time. It's a tough one to take,' acknowledged midfielder Baningime. 'It's hard to take positives out of losing, but I think you've got to. It's happened, you've lost, you've got to move on, and you've got to bounce back as quickly as you can. 'I think from the pre-season, when we even beat a Premier League side [Sunderland] in one of our games, it's been good so far. It's a bump in the road. The game could have gone either way. That's what penalties are. We could be coming in and saying: 'Oh great, a win.' Unfortunately for us, that wasn't the case. It's happened, and we have to try not to allow this to derail us any further.' READ MORE: Defiant McInnes lays it on the line for Hearts

Leicester legend spotted at Celtic training ground amid Jamie Vardy transfer links

But it's not the one you might have expected. The two worked together at the King Power Stadium between 2019 and 2023, with Vardy being crowned the club's player of the year in Rodgers' first season and playing a key role in the FA Cup triumph in 2021. But it was another fan favourite from the Midlands who turned up at Lennoxtown today. That man was Marc Albrighton, the former Aston Villa, Leicester and West Brom star. The 35-year-old retired from playing two years ago and nowadays he works as a coach at Villa's academy. As Rodgers has done with other former players before, he allowed Albrighton to come up and spend some time watching his Hoops squad train. Albrighton was there to pick his old coach's brains and learn some tips of the coaching trade. Cameras spotted Rodgers walking with Albrighton out onto the training pitch for the start of the session. After that, Rodgers and first-team coach Adam Sadler (who Albrighton also knows from Leicester) had a chat at the side of the pitch. Rodgers then of course stepped onto the field himself once the session was underway, as Albrighton watched on. Rodgers put his team through their paces ahead of the first leg of their crucial Champions League play-off tie on Wednesday night against Kairat Almaty. Perhaps he's had enough of digging his player out in public, as there wasn't many from where we were sitting. It was the latest in a line of slow, uninspiring performances from Rangers but a victory nonetheless, making it two from their last six competitive games. Martin did make 10 changes to the team but the 4-2 win - only sealed by a 90th minute goal - over the League One side showed there isn't an awful lot of depth in this Rangers squad. Things threatened to get sticky in Plzen last week too when losing at half time before a Lyall Cameron goal put the tie beyond doubt in the second half. This play off tie should be a marked step-up on that Plzen side, with Club Brugge favourites to progress through the tie and bank that £40million payday for reaching the league phase proper. The Belgians came through a tricky tie against RB Salzburg last time out and have won four on the spin heading into this Glasgow showdown. They'll also take heart from their run to the last-16 last season where they were dumped out by Aston Villa having lost both legs of the tie - despite beating them during the league phase.
