India XI for fifth Test: Kuldeep Yadav in the mix, Akash Deep likely to return; call on Jasprit Bumrah soon
TimesofIndia.com in London:
It's all to play for on Thursday at The Oval and with the series still on the line, multiple changes - some forced, some tactical - are set to take place in India's playing XI for the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy.
Jasprit
Bumrah
's status will become clearer in the next 24 hours and while he continues to be in the mix, final call will be taken keeping his workload in mind. He has already bowled 119.4 overs in the series - including 33 in Manchester - but just one outing in the fourth Test meant there was extra time to cool the heels in the change room.
It is understood that a "wildcard" approach could be followed as far as Bumrah is concerned, and the team management is likely to shore up wicket-taking options for the fixture.
Kuldeep Yadav has been warming the bench during the four Tests and his wait may well end. There is some prediction of rain in the week ahead but weather has had very little bearing on the surfaces, which have continued to be dry throughout the series.

India must field an attack which is capable of picking 20 wickets in the Test as they have momentum on their side after the Manchester escape and have a bright chance of levelling the series.

Coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed on Sunday, all fast bowlers have regained fitness and available for selection but it will be interesting to see which combination India go for.
Gautam Gambhir fiery press conference: Slams critics, big update on Jasprit Bumrah, Karun vs Sai
Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep are set to feature and the third bowler could be either Bumrah or one of Arshdeep or Prasidh Krishna as Anshul Kamboj is highly unlikely to hold on to his spot after an underwhelming debut. This leaves the thinktank with the same question again - Shardul Thakur's "depth" or Kuldeep's wickets?
This time, however, there could well be an all-in call as the series is alive and kicking and Thakur's underutilisation clearly suggests there is very little trust in his abilities with the ball.
There has been so much chatter around Kuldeep since the start of the series and the long wait could finally end in the all-important fixture.
Jasprit Bumrah's fitness and workload will be assessed to ascertain if he plays the fifth Test against England. (Image: X/BCCI)
If Bumrah gets, and gives, an all clear, India will have not one but two X-factors in the playing XI and it will be a very strong statement to an opposition which appeared rattle at Old Trafford.
Dhruv Jurel will be the only new face in the batting order as he replaces injured Rishabh Pant and the rest are set to retain their spots.
Arshdeep Singh could be drafted in for India in the fifth Test against England if Jasprit Bumrah is ruled out. (Image: X/BCCI)
Apart from Jurel, the bowling combination will witness multiple changes and as of now, Akash Deep, Kuldeep are emerging as strong candidates to be in the XI, with discussions still underway on Bumrah. The possibility of drafting Arshdeep Singh, who was always being prepared for the last two games, in the XI will not come as a surprise if Bumrah decides against playing at The Oval.

England suffer India's fate: Will Chris Woakes be allowed an injury substitute?
England seamer Chris Woakes walked off the field injured on Day 1 of the final Test match against India at The Oval. Woakes, in the final session of the day, left the field grimacing in pain after injuring his left shoulder while chasing a incident occurred on the fifth ball of the 57th over when Karun Nair drove Jamie Overton down the ground. Woakes sprinted to stop the ball, successfully preventing a boundary as Nair ran three, but landed awkwardly and immediately clutched his shoulder before walking now find themselves in the same position as the Indian team, who were sweating over Rishabh Pant's fitness in the 3rd and 4th match of this series, after injuring his thumb and toe respectively. Pant, however, braved his injury to come out and bat, after he was allowed a wicketkeeping replacement in the form of Dhruv Jurel. Stokes on the other hand is unlikely to get an injury replacement in case he does not come out to bowl once again in the Test to the laws, a team can only substitute a player in case of a concussion. And hence it is unlikely that England will be permitted to bring on a substitute who can bowl in this Test seamer Gus Atkinson spoke briefly on the matter and said that things do not look good with Stokes at the moment, who might have dislocated his shoulder.'I don't know too much, but it doesn't look great. It's the last game of the series, and it's always a big shame when anyone gets injured. I'm hoping it's not too serious, and whatever it is, he'll have everyone's full support,' Atkinson said in the press conference after Day 1's vs Gambhir: Injury Replacement DebateThe debate on injury replacement in Test cricket has already taken place in this series. India head coach Gautam Gambhir and England captain Ben Stokes were on polar opposites on the matter. While Gambhir wanted the laws to allow replacements for external injuries, Stokes said that several teams would use loopholes and misuse the law."...if there's an external injury or serious concern, I fully support having a substitute. Especially in a series like this, if someone's visibly injured, there's nothing wrong with making a change. In a long series like this, you can't be forced to play with just ten players," Gambhir had argued after the 4th Test match in however, was not a fan and called out the suggestion."I think it's absolutely ridiculous that there's a conversation around an injury replacement," Stokes said. "I think that there would just be too many loopholes for teams to be able to go through. You pick your 11 for a game; injuries are part of the game. I completely understand the concussion replacement: player welfare, [and] player safety. But I think the conversation should just honestly stop around injury replacements because if you stick me in an MRI scanner, I could get someone else in straightaway," Stokes said in the post-match press you stick anyone else with an MRI scanner, a bowler is going to show, 'Oh yeah, you've got a bit of inflammation around your knee. Oh sweet, we can get another fresh bowler in.' I just think that conversation should be shut down and stopped," he now, England sweat over Woakes' injury as they had already rested four of their players for the final Test match. The team does not have Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer, Brydon Carse and Liam Dawson, who were rested from this case Woakes does not return, England will be left with Gus Atkinson, Josh Tongue, Jamie Overton and spinner Jacob Bethell.- EndsMust Watch

Which Indian has the longest gap between fifties in cricket history? No it's not Karun Nair
India's Karun Nair raises his bat after scoring a fifty against England in the fifth Test at The Oval. (PTI) It had been a long wait — 3149 days to be precise — but Karun Nair finally has another fifty-plus score to his name in Test cricket. The right-hander, who once lit up the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai with a remarkable 303 not out against England in December 2016, reached an unbeaten 52 at stumps on Day 1 of the fifth Test on Thursday, marking his first significant score in nearly nine years. This gap between two fifty-plus scores in men's Tests is the second-longest for an Indian batter, since the second World War. The only Indian with a longer drought is Parthiv Patel , who endured 4426 days between his fourth and fifth Test fifties — from 54 against Australia in October 2004 to 67 against England in November 2016. India vs England 5th Test Preview: Can Shubman Gill's India level the series at The Oval? Nair's resilient half-century came after a series of promising, but thrown-away starts during previous matches. It was a major highlight of the opening day's play at The Oval, helping India cross the 200-run mark and stitching a half-century partnership with Washington Sundar, which will resume on day two. This tour marks Nair's return to international cricket after eight years. India's assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate hailed Nair's fighting half-century against England. "He started off at six in the first test and then batted at three for the other two tests. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Real-Time Conversations in 68 Languages? India vs England 5th Test Day 2, London Weather Report: Will rain play a spoilsport in IND vs ENG at Oval?
India vs England (IND vs ENG) 5th Test Day 2 London Weather Forecast Report: Trailing 2-1 in the five-match Test series against England, a Shubman Gill-led India will look to end on a high with a win in the final Test at London's Oval Stadium and level the series. With the fate of the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy hanging in the balance, overcast conditions and a green-top pitch, favouring England's pacers, have made life difficult for the visitors. Only 64 overs were bowled on the first day, despite extended play, after rain caused an initial delay. Overcast skies persisted throughout Thursday in London, and after losing their fifth consecutive toss, India struggled against England's pace attack in challenging conditions. The batters fought hard but lost six top-order wickets, barely managing to cross 200 by stumps. The weather is expected to clear up slightly on Day 2, though the UK Met Office predicts the highest chance of rain between 1 PM and 3 PM local time (5:30 PM to 7:30 PM IST). Temperatures will remain steady at 19-20°C. London Weather on Friday (UK Met Office) As reported by The Indian Express, India did make four changes to their playing XI for the final Test: Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, Anshul Kamboj and Shardul Thakur missing out while Prasidh Krishna, Dhruv Jurel, Akash Deep and Karun Nair making it to the XI. Nair is unbeaten, batting on 52 alongside Washington Sundar as the duo will hope to take India to a fighting total. England too have made changes to their playing XI with captain Ben Stokes out injured. Besides their talismanic captain, the hosts have also rested Jofra Archer, Brydon Carse and Liam Dawson. In their place, England have named Jacob Bethell, Josh Tongue, Jamie Overton and Gus Atkinson into the playing XI with Pope handed captaincy.
