Risda Carnival 2025 targets 10k visitors with 60 local delicacies
KUALA LUMPUR: The Rasa Asli Desa Risda Carnival 2025 kicked off today, running until June 30, with organisers targeting over 10,000 visitors. The event features 28 entrepreneurs from 13 states presenting more than 60 types of local culinary delights.
Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) Datuk Rubiah Wang highlighted the ministry's support for rural entrepreneurs, particularly smallholders under the Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (Risda).
'Programmes like this not only add value in terms of marketing and sales, but also provide a real space to strengthen brands, business matching and market network development for rural entrepreneurs,' she said during the launch at Wangsa Walk.
Rubiah noted that many participating entrepreneurs earn between RM5,000 and RM10,000 monthly, with some already recording RM1,000 to RM2,000 in sales on the first day.
She expressed confidence in achieving the carnival's RM200,000 sales target.
Themed 'Rasa Tulen, Sentuhan Istimewa' (Authentic Flavours, Special Touch), the event blends tradition with creativity, featuring dishes like kek lapis, rendang maman, and gulai temenung.
Noorazlina Saramali, a 32-year-old entrepreneur from Beaufort, Sabah, shared her enthusiasm for introducing Sabahan specialties like kelupis and kucong to urban visitors.
'Kelupis is glutinous rice cooked with coconut milk and steamed in the same way as kucong, but kucong has a peanut filling flavoured with shrimp. I want to introduce kelupis to the people of Kuala Lumpur because this food is rarely available here,' she said.
Siti Hajar Husnan, 39, from Negeri Sembilan, brought Johor's burasak and lepat loi, typically seasonal treats now available year-round thanks to retort processing.
'Actually, this is a seasonal food, but when we process it using the retort method, it can last up to a year and can be eaten anytime.
We also sell it online on Shopee and TikTok, good thing there is always demand,' she said.
The carnival also features the RisSMart 24 brand stall by Risda Agri Food Sdn Bhd (RAFI), offering pastries, wagyu skewers, and tom yam bowls.
Additional activities include traditional cooking demos, a nostalgia-themed night showcase, and a kids' beauty pageant.

PUTATAN: Sabah's state-owned oil and gas company, SMJ Energy Sdn Bhd, is estimated to be worth RM5 billion based on its current asset value after operating for just three years. Sabah Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said this was a significant achievement for a company that began with only RM50 million in capital from a state government injection when it was founded three years ago. He said the success was due to SMJ Energy's investments in Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas)-owned companies. "As many are aware, and as we have explained and announced on several occasions, SMJ Energy was established following the signing of the Commercial Collaboration Agreement (CCA) with Petronas three years ago. "The state government provided us with RM50 million in seed capital, and from that, we went on to invest in Petronas-linked companies. "According to the latest valuation, this RM50 million company is now worth RM5 billion, with a sizeable portfolio of assets," he told reporters after launching Petagas Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) annual general assembly here today. Masidi, who is also chairman of SMJ Energy, was commenting on the current performance of the Sabah government-linked company (GLC). He said the achievement was the result of the hard work of professionals hired to manage and operate the company, without political interference. "Our operations at SMJ Energy are fully commercial; that's the key factor behind the company's strong performance. "In fact, last year alone we recorded a profit of RM350 million, managed by a team of just 30 professional staff," he said. Masidi said SMJ Energy now also holds a 50 per cent stake in a Petronas oil field through the Samarang Production Sharing Contract (PSC).

Mediation saves RM60 million in workplace disputes, says HR minister
GEORGE TOWN: Mediation has proven to be a cost-effective and efficient method for resolving workplace disputes, saving employers and employees millions while fostering industrial harmony. Human Resource Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong highlighted that 65 per cent of cases referred to the Department of Industrial Relations were successfully resolved through mediation in 2024, preventing unnecessary legal battles. Speaking at the inaugural Industrial Mediation Symposium 2025, Sim noted that mediation handled over 3,000 cases this year, reducing the burden on the Industrial Court. 'If each court case costs RM20,000 for both parties, mediation has saved more than RM60 million in 2024 alone,' he said. Before disputes escalate to court, the Department of Industrial Relations employs alternative dispute resolution (ADR) methods, primarily conciliation meetings, to settle conflicts amicably. Currently, 122 industrial relations officers (IROs) trained in professional mediation assist workers and employers in reaching swift resolutions. Sim emphasised the ministry's commitment to enhancing mediation expertise through partnerships with international bodies like the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and local institutions such as the Kuala Lumpur Mediation Centre and the Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF). Since 2024, collaboration with the US Department of Labour has further strengthened officers' mediation skills. The symposium, organised by the Society of JP Community Mediators Penang (SJPCMP) alongside the JP Mediation Bureau Penang and the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM), aimed to promote mediation as a key tool for workplace conflict resolution.

Campaign Promoting Local Fruits Intensified To Help Farmers
JOHOR BAHRU, June 27 (Bernama) -- The government will intensify the 'Eat Local Fruits' campaign to reduce dependency on imported fruits and help boost the income of farmers nationwide. Agriculture and Food Safety Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said that all federal and state government agencies are encouraged to serve local fruits at every function to show their support. 'The government has been encouraging the people to eat local fruits. We request that local fruits be served at official government functions because we want to prioritise local produce and support our farmers,' he said when opening the 2025 Malaysian Pineapple Day here today. Mohamad said the campaign will be officially launched in Tawau, Sabah, on July 5 before being gradually expanded to other states, adding that local fruits, including pineapples, durians, jackfruit, and avocados, not only have strong domestic market potential but are also competitive in export markets. On June 20, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim instructed all government departments to cease using imported goods, especially food, at official events to promote the use of local products. Mohamad said the directive not only supports the country's economic growth but also helps expand market opportunities for local farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs. He also praised the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM) for boosting the country's pineapple production to over RM1 billion. 'Alhamdulillah, our pineapple production is sufficient for domestic use, and any further increase will be geared towards export. LPNM, the private sector and individuals have answered the government's call to boost production,' he said. Mohamad also commended the Sarawak government for developing a new pineapple variety known as Sarawak Gold 1 (SG-1), which has produced high yields and shown strong disease resistance.
