KKDW steps in to help struggling family living in rundown hut
KUALA BERANG: The plight of a family of eight living in a dilapidated hut in Kampung Paya Besar has drawn the attention of the Terengganu office of the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW), which has pledged to help provide them with a more comfortable home. Terengganu KKDW director Md Razi Md Lazim said he had personally visited the family of Mat Nasir Ismail, 48, who has a 13-year-old son with a learning disability, to assess their living conditions. He said the family's financial difficulties had forced them to move frequently, affecting both their quality of life and the education of their two school-going children. 'We are working to resolve their housing issue. A new home will be provided, complete with electricity and water supply. 'For now, we'll repair and upgrade their current shelter, with the aim of completing it before Hari Raya Haji so they can live in safer and more dignified conditions,' he said when met in Kampung Paya Besar today. Mat Nasir's wife, Mazilah Mansor, 47, expressed her heartfelt thanks to KKDW for the assistance extended to her family. She hopes the help will mark a turning point in their lives, having endured years without electricity or clean water. Their hardship came to light after media reports highlighted that the family was living in a hut deep in the forest, with no walls or doors. Adding to the burden, Mat Nasir suffers from chronic asthma, which has long prevented him from doing physically demanding work to support his family. Two of their five children — Muhammad Ramadan, 13, and Muhammad Asyraf Muharam, 11 — are currently studying at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Seri Berang and Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Tengku Ampuan Intan, respectively.

Five ‘sick projects' in Sarawak to be completed under 13MP, says Rural and Regional Development Ministry
KUCHING, May 30 — Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi wants the five projects categorised as 'sick projects' in Sarawak, involving the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) under the 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP) and 12MP, to be completed during the 13MP period. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said the causes for the projects' delay included site issues such as permits, land acquisition and overlapping pipe alignments, in addition to weather conditions. 'Since the 13MP will be tabled at the coming Dewan Rakyat session, any sick projects will be expedited and its completion period must be within the 13MP, namely from Rolling Plan 1 to 5. 'For example, for non-sick projects, but projects that have been delayed, namely the Maktab Rendah Sains MARA (MRSM) in Lawas which has obtained approval but not yet implemented... my instructions is that it must be implemented under the 13MP Rolling Plan 1,' he said. He said this at a media conference after attending the Special Meeting on the Implementation of KKDW Development Projects in Sarawak here today. Ahmad Zahid said that following the landslide incident in Kampung Lereng Bukit, Miri in January, which completely damaged 14 houses, efforts to rebuild the houses of all the affected residents would be carried out after the Gawai Day celebration. 'A suitable plot of land has been obtained as determined by the Sarawak Land Custody and Development Authority (PELITA), with the implementation carried out by the state government agency,' he said, adding that the incident affected a total of 277 residents in the affected settlement. He also said that his ministry plans to set up the MARA Poly-Tech College (KPTM) of Sarawak either in Kuching or Samarahan to expand opportunities for youths in the state to further their studies at the pre-diploma, diploma and foundation level. He is targeting a total of 1,000 students to study at the KPTM by 2028. 'We plan to start with about 200 students and, in the following years, we expect to take in 500 students yearly,' he said, adding that the KPTM will offer studies in the fields of business, information technology and humanities. Also present were Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Rubiah Wang and Sarawak Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Datuk Julaihi Narawi. Earlier, the nearly two-hour special meeting aimed to coordinate the implementation of KKDW rural development projects in Sarawak to ensure the people can enjoy the basic facilities and infrastructure. Meanwhile, the KKDW said in a statement that Sarawak has received an allocation of RM3.2 billion under the 12MP, involving the implementation of 403 programmes and projects, a total project cost of RM21.73 billion. It added that of the total, 178 projects or 44.71 per cent have been identified as still in the 'Pre-Implementation' status, with 155 projects having been approved from 2021 to this year. — Bernama

Bersatu distorted facts over Banggi solar project - MP
Suhaimi KOTA KINABALU (May 27): Libaran Member of Parliament Datuk Suhaimi Nasir has slammed Sabah Bersatu for politicising the hybrid solar energy project on Banggi Island, accusing the party of distorting facts to gain 'cheap political mileage.' In response to recent claims by Bersatu Sabah Women chief Rahimah Majid who demanded clarification from Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on the project, Suhaimi said her accusations were baseless, misleading and ignored the actual circumstances surrounding the project. 'Her allegations are not grounded in facts and are sensational in tone. They not only confuse the public but also expose Bersatu's lack of understanding regarding the technical details of the project,' Suhaimi said in a statement on Tuesday. Suhaimi clarified that the Rural Electrification Supply Project (BELB) for a hybrid solar system on Banggi Island had in fact been fully completed in 2015, long before Zahid assumed leadership of the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW). 'The project was handed over to Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) for operation and maintenance. Any technical problems after the handover fall under SESB's responsibility — not KKDW's,' he stressed. He also noted that the villages named by Rahimah, Kampung Selamat, Pulau Tigabu and Pulau Balambangan, fall under a separate ongoing project: the Hybrid Solar System for Remote Islands of Sabah, which is currently 85% completed, with a delay of 349 days or 15 percent behind schedule. 'The KKDW Technical Division is in the process of terminating the contractor due to failure to meet both deadlines and standards. A follow-up site inspection is scheduled for June 16, 2025. This shows the government is taking clear and transparent action,' he said. Suhaimi also took issue with Rahimah's claim that the project was launched with great fanfare but later abandoned. 'That's a deliberate attempt to create a false narrative to distract from the real issue — the inefficiencies of the current state administration under GRS, which once included Bersatu,' he said. He further pointed out that the very projects now being criticised were initiated during Bersatu's own time in government. 'It is ironic. They inherited and implemented these projects, but now they want to blame others. This is not only irresponsible, but a complete embarrassment in terms of political integrity,' he added. Calling on Bersatu Sabah to stop 'barking from the sidelines,' Suhaimi urged the party to engage constructively and 'step into the arena to solve actual problems.' 'Sabahans are smart enough to see through political gimmicks. They know who delivers and who disappears when responsibility needs to be carried,' he said. 'Politics should be based on facts, not slander.' The Banggi Island solar project has recently drawn public scrutiny following concerns about delays and implementation setbacks in several remote villages. Suhaimi's remarks come as the federal government continues to monitor and enforce project accountability across rural Sabah.

Mobile PKD Centres a holistic approach in empowering rural communities
KANGAR: The Mobile Rural Community Centre (PKD Mobile) programme introduced by the Rural and Regional Development Ministry (KKDW) in 2023 is a holistic approach to reach out and empower rural communities through the provision of various services. Deputy Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Rubiah Wang said the programme has been expanded from the existing 191 centres in the country, and allows focus to be given to areas that are hard to access by providing entrepreneurial opportunities, skills training, exposure to technology and social security access. 'PKD Mobile is not only a place to stop by but has become a one-stop centre bringing government and private agencies together to provide training, services, local product exhibitions that have added value for communities. 'For instance, we provide online marketing training to women entrepreneurs using TikTok, introduce affordable social security systems and entrepreneurial programmes like chicken breeding, rubber smallholdings and padi planting via agencies such as FELCRA and RISDA,' she said at a media conference after officiating the two-day Kuala Perlis PKD Mobile programme in Kampung Tengah, Kuala Perlis near here today. Rubiah said the approach used would allow more human capital development programmes to be delivered directly to target groups, including youth. 'We identify youth who lack direction and channel them to TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) centres such as GiatMARA, skill colleges, and U-Camp RISDA. This is their chance to rise from difficulties and build up their skills,' she added. The PKD Mobile programme is part of the KKDW's initiatives to raise the standard of living for rural communities but the existing 191 centres are currently unable to reach all rural communities, and as such the ministry will redouble efforts to organise the programme so that the government services coverage will be more comprehensive for communities in hard-to-reach areas.
