As home prices soar and dreams of ownership slip away for many Americans, one couple decided to stop chasing the market and a new life from the ground up.
In spring 2024, Sophie Hilaire Goldie, 37, and her husband Rocky Goldie, 50, purchased a 37.5-acre fixer-upper homestead in rural Kentucky for $390,000 and began transforming it into their forever home.

They are now dedicating their energy, time, and skills to remodeling the property into a self-sustaining lifestyle. Their plans include raising chickens, starting a dairy goat farm and launching a new skincare business.
'We are not moving,' Sophie said. 'It's weird even to think that's an option because it's not how we think. I have no interest in leaving — ever.'
Sophie, an Army veteran, and Rocky, a former Marine, met on Match.com. They quickly bonded over their shared love of the outdoors and their desire to embrace life.
When they started dating, Sophie transformed a friend's Home Depot shed into a tiny home after spending two years living in a Sprinter van. Their second date was spent working together to build the shed.
'It was important for me while we were dating to see if we could work together on projects,' Sophie told CNBC.
After she returned from a trip through Southeast Asia, Rocky suggested they find a place of their own. They turned to Zillow and searched for rural properties with at least 10 acres and a sense of history.
A local photographer introduced them to a real estate agent, who showed them the abandoned property. It included two log cabins from the 1840s, a 2,200-square-foot home with four bedrooms and one bathroom, a 200-square-foot separate cabin and two barns — all on 37.5 acres.
The couple secured a 30-year mortgage with minimum monthly payments of $1,790, but they plan to pay off their home within five years. Sophie recently launched her own skincare company, Seoul + Soil, inspired by their natural lifestyle on the homestead. The business is part of a larger goal to become 85% to 90% self-sufficient.
'I think it's the most excited I've ever been about anything,' Sophie said. 'There's nothing more entrepreneurial than just making up your life.'

For the Goldies, homesteading is more than a lifestyle — it's a financial strategy grounded in long-term resilience and freedom.

The iconic Goodyear Blimp is 100. To celebrate, a flight over Ohio
The iconic Goodyear airships are taking a victory lap over the skies of an Ohio city this week. The Akron-based tire company is celebrating the 100th anniversary of 'Pilgrim,' its first blimp to take flight just outside of the city on June 3, 1925. Goodyear began experimenting with vessels that would be lighter than aircraft in the early 1900s, and the dirigibles have since become a lasting and iconic symbol of the corporate brand. For some, it evokes nostalgia, while for others it offers a glimpse into a larger-than-life part of advertisement history. Here is a by-the-numbers look at Goodyear airships over time: Goodyear establishes an Aeronautics Department to build lighter-than-air aircrafts, and by 1912 the company had built its first balloon. In 1930, the 'Defender' blimp became the first airship in the world to carry a lit neon sign so the company's name could be seen after dark. Goodyear began making airships for the U.S. Navy in 1917, and its first blimp — the first commercial non-rigid airship flown using helium — launched years later, becoming a marketing tool. From 1942 to 1944, the company built more than 150 airships for the Navy to serve in World War II, flying patrol over warships on the seas with zero reported loss of ships when a blimp was on watch. The Goodyear Blimp has been a regular at major sporting events since flying above the 1955 Rose Bowl. A few years later, it became a service vehicle for television coverage while simultaneously functioning as a highly visible advertising platform. Since that time, blimps have undergone wholesale changes and improved dramatically: steering technology; safety innovations; high-definition cameras; aerial views captured with specialized systems that compensate for movement during filming, resulting in stable and smooth footage footage; and much quieter rides thanks to relocated engines and propellers. There currently are four Goodyear Blimps — the three in the U.S. and one in Friedrichshafen, Germany. Today's Goodyear Blimps are semi-rigid dirigibles, meaning they have an internal frame as compared to previous eras of blimps that could be fully deflated. In 2014, Goodyear transitioned to the New Technology semi-rigid airship platform designed to allow for improved maneuverability and speed. The Goodyear Blimp is 246 feet long (75 meters), which would cover about 80% of a football field. It is 58 feet (18 meters) high and holds three Olympic-sized swimming pools' worth of helium. Goodyear gets helium for its blimps from multiple sources. Because helium is a finite resource, the company purifies its helium every six to eight weeks to extend its life. The blimp travels more than 100 days per year, with trips ranging anywhere from three days to three weeks. A crew of nearly 20 people travel with the airship whenever it is touring. Today's Goodyear Blimps fly between 1,000 and 1,500 feet (305 meters and 457 meters) in the air and travel at speeds up to 73 miles per hour (117 kilometers per hour). There currently are fewer blimp pilots in the world than astronauts, according to Goodyear, which has 10 full-time pilots. To serve in that job, you must have a commercial pilot license followed by approximately 250 hours of training to earn an additional lighter-than-air airship rating from the Federal Aviation Administration. The blimp has covered more than 2,500 events and taken more than 500,000 passengers for rides, according to Goodyear. Former President Ronald Reagan might be the most famous passenger, but it was rapper Ice Cube who raised the blimp's street cred when he included a line about it in his 1992 song titled 'It Was A Good Day.'

Buxton drives in 5 as Twins win 10-4 to hand Athletics 7th straight loss and 18th in 19 games
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Byron Buxton matched his career high with five RBIs and the Minnesota Twins extended the Athletics' losing streak to seven games with a 10-4 victory Monday night. Buxton had a two-run double with two outs in a six-run second inning. He drove in two more with a bases-loaded single in the sixth and added a sacrifice fly in the ninth. Lawrence Butler hit a three-run homer for the Athletics (23-38), who have lost 18 of 19 overall. They fell to 9-20 at Sutter Health Park, their temporary home for at least the next three seasons. In the opener of a four-game series, the Twins went down in order in the first against Luis Severino before batting around in the second. Ty France singled in the first two runs and Buxton made it 4-0. Trevor Larnach had an RBI single before Brooks Lee doubled in the final run of the inning. Lee added an RBI single in the eighth. Butler walked, went to third on Jacob Wilson's double and scored on Brent Rooker's hard comebacker to Twins starter Joe Ryan in the third for the Athletics' first run. Butler hit his ninth homer — a two-out shot to center field in the fourth — to get the A's within 6-4. Ryan (6-2) loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth but escaped unscathed. He gave up four runs and six hits in five innings. Buxton's two-run single chased Severino (1-5), who allowed eight runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.
