Viktor Gyökeres fails to report for Sporting training as he targets Arsenal move

The Guardian2 days ago
Sporting are poised to take disciplinary action against Viktor Gyökeres after he missed his deadline to report for pre-season training. The striker, who wants a move to Arsenal, had been asked to join the rest of the squad by 5pm local time on Saturday.
Gyökeres's absence was not entirely unexpected, the Sweden international having informed the Portuguese club of his intention not to return for the upcoming campaign. There is a faint hope at Sporting that a deal with Arsenal could be finalised this weekend.
Sporting are likely to fine Gyökeres unless he can present a legitimate justification for his absence, such as medical grounds, extended leave authorised by the board or an urgent family matter. The squad left for a training camp in the Algarve without him.
The Portuguese champions, for whom Gyökeres scored 54 times in 52 games last season, have no pressing need to sell. That is the primary reason why their president, Frederico Varandas, has taken such a firm stance in negotiations with Arsenal. He has said he wants €70m (£60.2m) plus €10m in add-ons after rejecting an approach from the London club worth €65m plus €15m.
Sporting are in a position of financial stability and sustained on-pitch success, unlike for much of the past two decades. They have won three of the past five Primeira Liga titles, after a 19-year drought, and benefit from the regular revenue stream of Champions League qualification.
With the budget for the coming season secured, the club are under no obligation to cash in on key assets. Gyökeres has been central to Sporting's resurgence, scoring 97 goals in 102 appearances, and has three years on his contract.
Noni Madueke looks poised to finalise his £52m move from Chelsea to Arsenal after being granted permission to return to London from the Club World Cup as Enzo Maresca's side prepare to face Paris Saint-Germain in Sunday's final. The 23-year-old is expected to complete his medical in the coming days and will sign a five-year contract. Kepa Arrizabalaga left Chelsea for Arsenal at the start of the month.
Madueke will provide much-needed cover for Bukayo Saka on the right flank and is also capable of playing on the left, but it is understood Mikel Arteta still wants to add more creativity. Arsenal are expected to open negotiations with Crystal Palace over Eberechi Eze, although they are yet to make a formal offer. The England international, who has a £67.5m release clause, is thought to be open to the move.

Arsenal have also made progress in negotiations over a new contract for Ethan Nwaneri, who was part of the England Under 21 squad that were crowned European champions last month. He has attracted interest from Chelsea and clubs in Germany but is expected to join his fellow academy graduate Myles Lewis-Skelly in agreeing a deal to stay.

Mikel Arteta knows they need more reinforcements if they are to close the gap to top spot in the Premier League after three successive second-place finishes. ‌ Fans have been crying out for a centre-forward for years and are beginning to get annoyed that one hasn't arrived. After looking at Benjamin Sesko, Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta has settled on Viktor Gyokeres, but things are complicated. ‌ Meanwhile, Arsenal are also chasing a winger. Speaking about his father, Washington said: "I think it's been such an honour to have him take me through clips and walk me through games that I've played. He's really passionate about making me a better player and probably a better version of him. We might have a bit of an argument about it but you get it out of him." ‌ About Arsenal, he added: "I think it's a really big club, obviously. The club are always striving to win trophies. I'm just looking to be an addition to that and see what I can offer the club.' "Noni is in contact with a new club," said the Chelsea boss ahead of the Club World Cup final. "I guess that he's going to leave in the next hours. ‌ "I said in one of the last press conferences that at the end, if players want to leave, at the end, it's difficult for the club and for the manager. Noni decided to leave, nobody told Noni he had to leave. If he is happy, we are happy." There has been a negative reaction from some supporters to the Madueke interest, with many annoyed that Arsenal are signing another player from their London rivals. But the England winger is keen on the transfer and it looks set to go ahead in the coming days. Gyokeres fined ‌ Viktor Gyokeres has been fined by Sporting Lisbon - but Arsenal are closing in on a deal for the Swede. Joao Pedro blasts PSG after Luis Enrique fight in Club World Cup final

Joao Pedro has accused Paris Saint-Germain of being sore losers after he clashed with Luis Enrique during Chelsea's Club World Cup final win on Sunday. Chelsea stunned PSG in the final at the MetLife Stadium as a first-half double from Cole Palmer, plus an excellent finish from Pedro before the break, sealed a 3-0 victory for Enzo Maresca's side. However, tensions boiled over between both teams moments after the final whistle and the main flashpoint occurred when PSG duo Gianluigi Donnarumma and Achraf Hakimi confronted Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos. Pedro, who joined Chelsea in a £60 million deal from Brighton earlier this month, stepped in front of Donnarumma and Hakimi to protect Santos but Luis Enrique approached the Brazilian forward and pushed him in the face, knocking him to the ground. Luis Enrique was held back by PSG defender Presnel Kimpembe but the Spaniard now faces serious repercussions over his clash with the Chelsea forward. When asked about the incident with Luis Enrique, Pedro told Sportv: 'I went to protect Andrey, I saw their players were crowding Andrey. 'Like a good Brazilian, I went to protect my friend. A lot of people were arriving and in that mess, I ended up getting shoved. It's part of it. 'They didn't know how to lose, but that's football.' Speaking to CazeTV about Luis Enrique's push on Pedro, Santos said: 'There's no way of knowing at the time. I don't bow down to anyone. 'Jota [Joao Pedro] and the guys arrived. What matters is that we were champions.' Meanwhile, Luis Enrique claims he was attempting to diffuse the situation and claims Chelsea manager Maresca was also involved in the post-match brawl. 'What happened at the end of the match was a situation that everyone could have avoided,' Luis Enrique said. More Trending 'I tried to separate the players, there was tension. 'We should have all prevented the situation from escalating. I have no problem speaking up. 'After the match, there was a lot of tension. Everyone pushed and shoved players, a result of the tension. 'I saw Maresca push players, and people pushed him. These are situations we should all avoid. What I did was separate the players.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Real Madrid set new transfer fee for Liverpool and Arsenal to sign Rodrygo

Liverpool have joined Premier League rivals Arsenal in the race to sign Real Madrid winger Rodrygo, according to reports in Spain. Brazil international Rodrygo has been heavily linked with a move away from the Bernabeu this summer. The 24-year-old has been a key player for Real Madrid over the past five seasons, making 270 appearances for Los Blancos and helping the club win three La Liga titles and two Champions Leagues. Despite his influence in Madrid, Rodrygo has been linked with a summer move after his relationship with the club soured last season. Xabi Alonso's arrival at Real Madrid initially looked set to keep Rodrygo at the club but the Brazilian was benched for five of Madrid's six matches at the Club World Cup. Reports in Spain say Real Madrid are open to selling Rodrygo, believing he has 'become more of a problem than a solution'. Arsenal held talks over a move for the talented winger earlier in the summer and could yet revive their interest. Mikel Arteta is set to welcome Noni Madueke to the Emirates Stadium in a £55m deal from Chelsea but the England international favours playing off the right. Gabriel Martinelli, often on Arsenal's left wing, has been linked with a summer move, with Bayern Munich registering an interest in Rodrygo's Brazil teammate. Arsenal are not looking to sell Martinelli but his exit could lead to a stunning bid for Rodrygo, one of the most highly-rated wingers in the world. According to AS, Liverpool have also expressed interest in signing Rodrygo as they look for further attacking reinforcements for Arne Slot. The Premier League champions spent £115m on German playmaker Florian Wirtz but are open to bringing further forwards to Anfield, especially is Luis Diaz leaves. Barcelona have made Diaz one of their top summer transfer targets along with Manchester United's Marcus Rashford and Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams. Reports in Spain say that while Real Madrid are open to offers for Rodrygo, they want slapped an asking price of 100m euros (£86m) on the Brazilian. Rodrygo was thought to be available at around £67m but AS claim Madrid are now demanding more, knowing there is substantial interest in a player entering the peak years of his career. More Trending Earlier in the summer, ex-England defender Micah Richards said he 'really believes' Rodrygo could leave Real Madrid this summer and insisted he would be a 'good fit' for Arsenal. 'Rodrygo said he didn't want to play on the right, didn't he? That's where the frustration is coming from,' the former Manchester City star said on The Rest Is Football podcast. 'Everyone wants to play on the left, even though they're right-footed. I think he could leave in the summer, I really believe he could leave. 'He's a top player, a top player. He's been linked with Arsenal as well. 'I think Rodrygo would fit in really good in the Arsenal system, for sure.' For more stories like this, check our sport page.
