Forest dept acts on woman's tip, saves tree from axe in school in Kolkata
2
Kolkata: Environmental activists have praised the prompt response of the state forest department in protecting a kadam tree that was being illegally felled on a school compound in Dum Dum's Bediapara.
This action was taken after the department learned of the incident from an email sent by a citizen to the range forest officer.
A woman from the neighbourhood spotted a few woodcutters axing the 50-ft tall tree on July 26 and stopped them. She wrote to the range forest officer after the men could not provide any approval to cut the tree. Acting on the complaint, the forest department inspected the site the following day and prevented any further harm to the tree.

"When I wrote to the forest department, it was a formality. I was sceptical. But seeing the prompt action, I and others in the locality are encouraged. Three ponds in the area are under threat. One has already been partially filled up and turned into a parking area for cars. We hope to take up the fight to save these water bodies next," she said, requesting anonymity due to fear of backlash from local netas and dadas.
Bonani Kakkar of the green activism group PUBLIC said the forest department's prompt response to the SOS from an ordinary citizen keen to preserve a tree was extremely heartening.
"This will increase our belief in the system. People will know that a complaint will not be ignored but there will be a response. It will also encourage many more to fight against the destruction of greenery," she added.

City gears up for I-Day celebrations in a grand manner
1 2 3 4 5 6 Prayagraj: Sangam city residents have been making elaborate preparations to celebrate Independence Day (Aug 15) in a grand style. While flag makers Altaf and Razia Begum have been busy making the tricolour several markets and roadside vendors have come up with different items like small flags, badges, pens, wristbands caps etc, that people would love to buy to show their respect for the nation. Alam and around 30 other expert tailors of the Sangam city, mostly living in the old city area, have been busy stitching flags since last month. He, along with five other members of his family, stitched thousands of flags by Tuesday night. "I have been stitching our tricolour for the past around 22 years. This noble work not only helps me earn bread and butter for the family but also gives me a sense of pride as I am associated with the honour of my motherland," said Alam. Stitched from cotton fabric, his family and kin make around 150 flags of the size of around 5ft in length and around 500 of smaller size. Equally popular are the items sold by Mohammad Qadir, a wholesaler of Chowk. The shelves of his shop are full of items like pens, wristbands, caps, pen stands, torches, badges, balloons, greeting cards etc. "This is one occasion in the year wherein the demand for various items keeps on increasing every year as the items are equally popular among both elders and youngsters," said Qadir. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Green screens are under attack. "Not only educational institutions and offices but owners of Vikram (auto) of the city have placed their orders for flowers. The auto owners love to decorate their Vikrams with garlands and balloons, representing the tricolour," said Gopi, a flower seller of Rambagh Mandi. Equally busy are the sweet makers, for they have also received orders for supplying ladoo (a variety of sweet) that would be distributed among students and employees of the organisations after unfurling the tricolour. "The problem with us is that we cannot prepare the sweets in advance, so we are pulling up our socks for the evening of Aug 14 when we would start making ladoos, which would be supplied early in the morning of the next day," said Ganesh Yadav, owner of a sweet shop. Greens raise concern over non-native plantation along h'ways of 2 districts
Kolhapur: Several environmentalists have raised concerns over the public works department's (PWD) decision to plant nearly 60,000 trees alongside the highways of Kolhapur and Sangli districts. The plan includes planting non-native species like gulmohar along with a native species of kadamb tree. Environmentalists objected to the monotonous method and demanded that a mix of native plant varieties be planted. The PWD is currently running a campaign to plant such trees. So far, 11,000 trees were planted this monsoon. However, this project has led trees to be felled on both sides of the national highways in the districts. In Kolhapur district, 29,000 trees will be planted on both sides of the 541-kilometre road. Similarly in Sangli district, 29,288 trees will be planted on the 855-kilometre road. Renowned environmentalist Suhas Waingankar said, "There will be radical changes in human health, local animals and birds, their habitat, biodiversity, and climate due to planting of exotic trees. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Flexible Phone Plans for Small Biz Undo If this dangerous situation is ignored, the entire ecosystem may be in danger in the future. Local indigenous trees are compatible with the environment and biodiversity, as well as add to the beautification. Native trees also have medicinal properties. " In Sangli, a signature movement has been called on Aug 14 at Mahaveer Garden, demanding a change in the PWD's decision. Amol Jadhav, an environment expert from Sangli, said, "Gulmohar is a non-native species and has no role in local biodiversity. Kadamb tree is good, but monoculture plantation is wrong. Arjuna, behada, kusum, banyan, peepal, tamarind, Indian gooseberry, neem, maharukh, and other native plants should be planted." Environment lovers gave PWD officials a list of local indigenous trees suitable for the roads in the Kolhapur and Sangli districts. PWD superintending engineer Tushar Burud said, "We will make appropriate changes in the PWD's SOP to plant local indigenous trees on both sides of the road in a practical and suitable manner in Kolhapur and Sangli districts, in the future."
