City gears up for I-Day celebrations in a grand manner

Prayagraj: Sangam city residents have been making elaborate preparations to celebrate Independence Day (Aug 15) in a grand style.
While flag makers Altaf and Razia Begum have been busy making the tricolour several markets and roadside vendors have come up with different items like small flags, badges, pens, wristbands caps etc, that people would love to buy to show their respect for the nation.
Alam and around 30 other expert tailors of the Sangam city, mostly living in the old city area, have been busy stitching flags since last month.
He, along with five other members of his family, stitched thousands of flags by Tuesday night.
"I have been stitching our tricolour for the past around 22 years. This noble work not only helps me earn bread and butter for the family but also gives me a sense of pride as I am associated with the honour of my motherland," said Alam.
Stitched from cotton fabric, his family and kin make around 150 flags of the size of around 5ft in length and around 500 of smaller size.
Equally popular are the items sold by Mohammad Qadir, a wholesaler of Chowk. The shelves of his shop are full of items like pens, wristbands, caps, pen stands, torches, badges, balloons, greeting cards etc.
"This is one occasion in the year wherein the demand for various items keeps on increasing every year as the items are equally popular among both elders and youngsters," said Qadir.

Similar preparations are being made by flower sellers.
"Not only educational institutions and offices but owners of Vikram (auto) of the city have placed their orders for flowers. The auto owners love to decorate their Vikrams with garlands and balloons, representing the tricolour," said Gopi, a flower seller of Rambagh Mandi.
Equally busy are the sweet makers, for they have also received orders for supplying ladoo (a variety of sweet) that would be distributed among students and employees of the organisations after unfurling the tricolour.
"The problem with us is that we cannot prepare the sweets in advance, so we are pulling up our socks for the evening of Aug 14 when we would start making ladoos, which would be supplied early in the morning of the next day," said Ganesh Yadav, owner of a sweet shop.

Byculla Masjid welcomes non-Muslim visitors
Perhaps there could not have been a more solemn occasion than the Independence Day for this. As the country celebrated its 79th Independence Day with the theme "Nayab Bharat", the 125-year-old Chishti Hindustani Masjid in Byculla invited a group of non-Muslims for a "Masjid Parichay" or "Know My Mosque" initiative. Stoppages restored at Irugur, Singanallur for two express trains
COIMBATORE: Southern Railway has announced restoration of stoppages for two express trains at Irugur and Singanallur with effect from Monday (Aug 18) in response to requests from rail passengers. TOI had on July 21 published an article on how the cancellation of stoppages for the Coimbatore-Nagercoil Express and Palakkad Town-Tiruchirappalli Express trains at Singanallur after the Covid-19 pandemic had affected the passengers. Pointing out that Singanallur was a rapidly growing locality, the TOI report had also said how vital it was to restore the stoppages for ensuring last-mile connectivity and easing passenger load at other stations like Coimbatore Junction. On Krishna Janmashtami, Saini announces grants for cattle welfare in Haryana
Kurukshetra: Chief minister Nayab Singh Saini on Saturday said his govt was committed to cow protection and gaushala development. Participating in an event held under the Gaushala Fodder Grant Distribution Programme at a private institution in Kurukshetra on Krishna Janmashtami , Saini expressed happiness on being among the devotees of mother cow and extended his greetings to all the cattle rearers and gaushala managers. "The greatness of the cow has been extensively described in our Vedas. Immediately after our govt was formed, we passed the Cow Protection Bill in the state assembly to strengthen this tradition," said the CM. Announcing new initiatives, Saini said Rs 1.80 crore had been allocated to 19 gaushalas in Kurukshetra district for fodder, while a total of Rs 88.50 crore would be distributed across Haryana's gaushalas this year. So far, the state govt has already released Rs 358.50 crore for cow fodder support. Highlighting Haryana's progress in the field, the CM informed that over the last decade, 686 gaushalas were registered in the state, housing and nurturing more than four lakh stray cattle. To modernise gaushalas, solar energy plants were installed in 330 gaushalas, and the process is underway to cover the remaining ones.
