Harry Potter film with 96% rating dubbed 'perfect as entire franchise ranked
Author J.K. Rowling is in the spotlight once more for her controversial views on the trans community, this time drawing criticism from Stephen Fry – the voice behind all seven Harry Potter audiobooks – who has labelled her a "lost cause".
Despite the controversy surrounding its creator, the Harry Potter film series has continued to fare well. And now all the movies, including the less-celebrated Fantastic Beasts spin-offs, have been ranked by Rotten Tomatoes, with some doing better than others.
Topping the list as the most acclaimed adaptation is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, hailed as a fitting adieu to the cherished magical realm by both critics and fans alike.
At the opposite end of the spectrum sits the 2018 release, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, which failed to win over many viewers, reports the Express.
Below is the Rotten Tomatoes ranking of the Harry Potter films, from the highest to lowest rated
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011)
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 96%
Helmed by director David Yates
One critic perfectly captured the sentiment towards the final instalment, stating: "For a grand finale to a truly epic, good-natured franchise, this is a perfect goodbye that's very hard to beat."
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 96%
Directed by Alfonso Cuarón
The third instalment in the Harry Potter film series garnered effusive accolades from reviewers, particularly lauding Cuarón's contribution: "Prisoner of Azkaban is a standout entry in the Harry Potter franchise - it establishes an effective tone under Alfonso Cuarón's stellar direction."
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 88%
Directed by Mike Newell
Describing the fourth film, a succinct Wall Street Journal critique exclaimed: "It's downright scary how good this movie is."
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 83%
In the directorial hands of David Yates
One reviewer's insight into the penultimate Harry Potter chapter spoke volumes: "The strangest thing about the new Harry Potter movie is not that it's unusually good, which it is, but that it unequivocally illustrates just how poorly we've been served by the previous five instalments in the franchise."
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 82%
Helmed by Chris Columbus
Columbus' second venture into the wizarding world was met with observations of progress: "Director Chris Columbus has pushed the envelope farther, made a sequel that is pacier and more swashbuckling. Yet it still feels cautious and reined-in."
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 80%
The first foray with Chris Columbus at the helm.
Critics were unanimously taken by Harry Potter's initial cinematic adventure, noting: "The quickest, zappiest two and a half hours of entertainment you'll ever see."
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 78%
Directed by David Yates, the fifth instalment in the Potter series didn't quite live up to expectations, with one critic bluntly stating: "Brought me straight back to one of the most enduring of childhood feelings: boredom."
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010) also saw Yates at the helm
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 77%
The seventh film received its fair share of criticism as one reviewer observed: "The trouble with Harry, as becomes clear from this seventh and penultimate installment, is not that we have lost the plot -- the film is as tangled and as corkscrewed as Bonham Carter's hair -- but that we are in danger of losing everything else."
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016), another Yates-directed venture, struggled to impress, with a commentator noting: "The film strains considerably under the weight of all its plot lines-it's never fun to be the movie with the origin story."
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 74%
The subsequent Fantastic Beasts instalment, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022), directed by Yates too, faced similar critique. Rotten Tomatoes rating: 46%
A disappointed reviewer remarked: "Even taken on its own merits, it's a case of a sequel too far. There's no getting away from the fact that, without Harry Potter, this (movie) doesn't seem to know where to go."
Furthermore, the prior Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018) had also seen Yates in the director's chair.
With a disappointing 36% rating, The Crimes of Grindelwald sits at the bottom of the Harry Potter series, receiving a drubbing from both critics and cinema-goers alike. One reviewer described it as: "About as exciting as a trip to Hogwarts's most neglected lavatory."
For those in the UK looking for a magical fix, the complete Harry Potter collection is now on Netflix, ready for streaming.
Across the pond, US folks can find all the Harry Potter films up for rent on Amazon Prime Video.

Miriam Margolyes says 'you can't cancel me' amid calls for her to be stripped of OBE
Harry Potter actress Miriam Margolyes has been vocal in calling out Israel's actions in Gaza as she stands by her statements amid calls for her OBE to be taken from her Miriam Margolyes has revealed she doesn't fear getting cancelled after calling out Israel's actions in Gaza. She says she has a responsibility to speak out and call for change and doesn't worry about any consequences. The actress, 84, called for fellow Jews around the world to 'shout, beg, scream for a ceasefire' in Gaza last year. Miriam said she was 'so ashamed of Israel ' for defending its actions. The Harry Potter star teamed up with the Jewish Council of Australia where she issued her video message. It comes after Bob Geldof issued a desperate plea on Sky News to save babies in Gaza. There have been calls for Miriam to be stripped of her OBE after comparing the Israeli government's actions to the Nazis during the Holocaust. In an interview with the Big Issue, she said: "I cannot bear to think that my people are doing exactly the same thing to another nation." Miriam has stood by her statements and has no worries about it. She told The Guardian newspaper: 'People say: 'You're just an actor, for f***'s sake, shut up.' Well, that is a point of view. I don't happen to share that. "I think that if you have a chance to make an impact for good, to change things, then you should. I think it's an absolute requirement, and people don't, out of fear sometimes. They are afraid of being cancelled. You can't cancel me!' Miriam also had the same sentiments in her interview with the BBC as she said: "They talk about cancel, being cancelled, but nobody's going to cancel me, I'm not having it. "I don't think people should use that expression. Everybody should be able to express their opinion. What Israel is doing to Palestine is wicked and it's totally against our upbringing as Jews." In her video last year, Miriam said: 'To me, it seems as if Hitler has won. He's changed us Jews from being compassionate and caring and do unto others as you would have them do unto you into this vicious, genocidal nationalist nation, pursuing and killing women and children.' She condemned the actions of Hamas and allies on October 7. Miriam said what is happening in Gaza is 'shocking, embarrassing and wicked and I cannot understand why all Jewish people, particularly members of synagogues, do not want immediately to stop what is going on.' The actress was awarded an OBE in 2002 for Services to drama, but she has now faced calls for her to be stripped of the honour. The Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) responded to her statements and called it 'repugnant'. A statement from the CAA said: "The fact she was born Jewish does not give her license to use her immense platform to spread anti-Jewish venom. 'This has to be the end of the road. She must be shunned by the showbiz world that has fawned and bowed until now.' CAA added that it would write to the Honours Forfeiture Committee as well as BAFTA to ask them to remove Miriam of her titles.

The new Lego Harry Potter set is a very Christmassy looking Hogsmeade
Lego is celebrating Back to Hogwarts Day next month, with three free Harry Potter sets, including a brand new Room of Requirement. Some of the bigger Lego sets aimed at adults might seem very expensive, but in most cases they're intended to be birthday or Christmas presents, or at least for some sort of special occasion. The latest Harry Potter Collectors' Edition isn't cheap, but it would make the perfect Christmas gift – not least because it already looks the part. The Collectors' Editions are special giant-sized sets which recreate famous scenes or characters in more detail than cheaper ones aimed at kids. Sets like Gringotts Wizarding Bank and the Hogwarts Express might not be impulse purchases but they're the crème de le crème of Harry Potter Lego. This new set includes seven buildings, looking just as they appeared in the films, and all covered in snow; that includes the first ever Lego version of Zonko's Joke Shop and the Hog's Head pub. On top of that is a massive haul of 12 different minifigures, including some more obscure characters. Included amongst the minifigures are Harry, Ron, and Hermione – obviously – but also Professor McGonagall, Aberforth Dumbledore, Katie Bell, Draco Malfoy, Cornelius Fudge, Horace Slughorn, Madam Rosmerta, and Mrs Flume. Each of the seven buildings are grouped into three sections, and includes the Honeydukes sweet shop, the Owl Post, The Three Broomsticks pub, Dervish and Banges, and Scrivenshaft's Quill Shop. The buildings all have authentic-looking interiors, with details like exploding bon bons and sneakoscopes, as well as a portrait of Ariana Dumbledore that opens to a hidden passage. Since everything is built to the same scale as Gringotts Wizarding Bank and Diagon Alley you can combine them all for the ultimate, brick-built Harry Potter display. As for the price, it's £349.99 in the UK, from Lego stores and the Lego website. It will be available from September 4, or September 1 if you're part of Lego Insiders Early Access – which only requires a free sign-up. More Trending As an extra incentive to sign-up there are a total of three different free gifts available on Back to Hogwarts Day, which if it's not on your calendar already is September 1. The gift with purchase sets include Harry Potter Quidditch Lesson, which recreates the scene where Harry first learnt about Quidditch in the Philosopher's Stone and is free with any Harry Potter purchase over £35. If you spend over £115 on Lego Harry Potter sets then you get the Hogwarts Castle: Room of Requirement, which is made up of 202 pieces and fits together with the other Hogwarts Castle sets – although this is the only way to get it and it won't be sold in shops. Finally, if you buy the Hogsmeade set (which is over £115, so automatically gets you the other two free sets as well) then you get a Hogsmeade Sign. This isn't made of Lego but is a metal ornament featuring the Lego Hogsmeade skyline and an arch from which hang signs for Honeydukes, The Three Broomsticks and The Hog's Head. Got a story?
