West Ham delay Michail Antonio contract decision until ‘right and appropriate' time

New York Times2 days ago

West Ham say they will delay their decision on Michail Antonio's future until a 'right and appropriate' time.
The club said in a statement on Monday morning that, as Antonio's current contract expires on June 30, he will be listed as a free transfer, for Premier League procedural reasons.
'Given Michail Antonio's unique situation, following his serious road traffic accident in December 2024, there will be no formal decision and announcement on his future until such time that it is considered right and appropriate,' West Ham said.
'As a long-serving, highly-respected player, and a much-loved member of the West Ham family, the club's absolute priority at this time is to support Michail personally in his journey to resume playing at the highest level.'
Antonio has not played since December when he was involved in a single-vehicle collision having struck a tree in Epping Forest. He underwent surgery on a lower limb fracture and spent three weeks recovering at a central London hospital.
The 35-year-old returned to the London Stadium on March 10 and was greeted by fans ahead of his side's 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United.

'I was avoiding going back (to the stadium) because I was slightly embarrassed by the crash,' he told BBC Morning Live in March. 'I didn't want to be seen. I almost died and it made me embarrassed that it was that bad. I went to see the car three weeks ago and it gave me a weird feeling in my stomach. It was difficult to see. Since the car crash, I've been more emotional than at any other point in my life.'
Antonio joined West Ham in 2015 from Nottingham Forest and is all the club's all-time leading goalscorer in the Premier League with 68 goals. He has found the net 83 times and provided 40 assists in 323 appearances in all competitions.
West Ham have already confirmed that Aaron Cresswell, Lukasz Fabianski, Vladimir Coufal and Danny Ings will be leaving the club upon the expiration of their contracts this summer.
France international defender Kurt Zouma, who spent last season on loan at Saudi Arabian side Al Orobah, will also leave at the end of the month.

Liverpool reach verbal agreement with Bayer Leverkusen for Florian Wirtz

Fabrizio Romano reports that Liverpool have reached a verbal agreement in principle with Bayer Leverkusen to sign Florian Wirtz for a reported €150m including bonuses. It brings an end to the saga that will see the 22-year-old German playmaker play for Arne Slot's side next season. Liverpool's latest offer comes just days after it was reported that Leverkusen were expecting a final offer from the Premier League side after rejecting two previous approaches. Advertisement The arrival of Wirtz – who is expected to sign a contract until 2030 – at Liverpool will see two transfer records broken: the record fee received by a Bundesliga club for a player, and a record arrival in the Premier League, beating Chelsea's record purchase of Enzo Fernandez for around €121m. Wirtz scored 10 goals and provided 13 assists in 31 Bundesliga games for Bayer Leverkusen last season, and 31 goal contributions (16 goals and 15 assists) in 45 games across all competitions. Liverpool in talks with SENSATIONAL striker who wants Premier League move

Liverpool in talks with SENSATIONAL striker who wants Premier League move Victor Osimhen available this summer The 26-year-old scored 37 goals in 41 games overall - sparking an almighty transfer clamour for his signature this summer. Napoli still own Osimhen's rights but there is no way back for him at the Diego Maradona Stadium. Therefore, the Italian champions are seeking to cash in this summer. Advertisement Osimhen is said to have rejected a move to Saudi Arabia at this stage of his career - and has his eyes firmly trained on the Premier League. And now, according to a report in TBR Football, the hitman has held talks with Liverpool over a move to Anfield. © IMAGO Liverpool hold Osimhen talks 'After recently holding discussions with Liverpool, Victor Osimhen is still determined to move to the Premier League this summer,' a report reads. 'Liverpool are interested in Osimhen, a striker who is also on Manchester United's radar.' The report also adds that Osimhen doesn't view his wage demands as excessive, despite previous speculation that his expected pay packet was pricing clubs out of the equation. With Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike's prices spiralling out of control, moreover, the report states that Osimhen is available for a very reasonable-looking £50m.

Leeds optimistic on Jaka Bijol transfer, Habib Diarra bid and Sean Longstaff interest

Leeds United remain optimistic on completing a deal for Udinese defender Jaka Bijol with talks focused on a deal valued around €15-18million (£12.7-15.2m). There is less confidence at Elland Road on signing Strasbourg midfielder Habib Diarra, despite lodging a bid of €26m (£22m). Meanwhile, Newcastle United's Sean Longstaff has emerged as another transfer target for Leeds. Last season, Newcastle triggered a one-year extension on the 27-year-old's contract to ensure he is secure until June 2026. Advertisement However, after eight league starts and less than 800 Premier League minutes in 2024-25, Leeds see Longstaff as an attainable midfielder this summer. There is no suggestion a bid has been made at this stage, but he is on the shortlist the club are working through in this window. Having racked up 171 Premier League appearances over the past seven years, Longstaff's top-flight experience appeals to newly-promoted Leeds. He has predominantly been used as a central midfielder by Newcastle, with some variation between defensive or attacking duties. Fulham striker Rodrigo Muniz is another Premier League target The Athletic reported over the weekend, but of the names in the public domain, the most advanced negotiations are with Udinese over Bijol. Sources at Elland Road, speaking anonymously to protect relationships, say talks accelerated over the weekend and while no fee has yet been decided upon, the valuation will be between €15-18m. Bijol, 26, has amassed 90 appearances in Serie A over the past three seasons in the centre of the Udinese defence. Only four players won more than his 109 aerial duels in the Italian top flight last season. Leeds are less certain about the direction Strasbourg may take matters with Diarra, in whom wider interest is anticipated which is likely to enhance his market valuation. In the other direction, current Leeds defender Max Wober has been informed he can find a new club this summer. The 27-year-old played just 335 minutes in the Championship last season after an injury-riddled campaign. After playing for Austria over the weekend, Wober said: 'Leeds has already made it clear to me that they want to sell me. I might have been able to send out a letter of application (with my performance).' Any fee over £5m ($6.8m) would improve the club's profit and sustainability projections on the books.
