New Saints beat Nomads to complete domestic Welsh treble

BBC News04-05-2025

The New Saints came from behind to beat holders Connah's Quay Nomads 2-1 to win the JD Welsh Cup Final and complete the domestic treble for the first time in 10 years.Nomads started the final at Newport's Rodney Parade with only 10 players after an error in naming the team but were ahead inside seven minutes.Midfielder Declan Poole scored his first of the season following a great piece of skill from Everton academy product Rhys Hughes. But Saints responded and although Adam Wilson's goal was harshly overturned for a pull on the shirt of Nomads defender Kris Owen they were level on 17 minutes.
Nomads captain John Disney brought down Jordan Williams 25 yards from his goal, and Rory Holden curled a free-kick into the top corner.Eight minutes into the second-half a Jordan Williams header from Danny Redmond's cross gave the Cymru Premier champions the lead.Connah's Quay would create a flurry of half-chances for the remainder of the game but TNS would do enough to see the game out and win a tenth Welsh Cup, equalling Swansea City's tally, with only Cardiff City and Wrexham having more.Having already qualified for the Uefa Champions League by winning the league, TNS' win means that second-placed Penybont will play in next season's Europa Conference League qualifiers.

Hibs prepare Porteous return offer amid uncertain Watford future

Read more: With his future uncertain at Championship side Watford, Hibs were close to securing a return on loan for the fans' favourite in the final days of the January window. Beaten to the punch by Preston North End, the Easter Road club will study the financial implications of re-signing a player who played over 150 games for the club before moving to Vicarage Road in January 2023. David Gray's side missed out on a guaranteed £5million UEFA windfall when Aberdeen won the Scottish Cup to claim group stage football in the Europa Conference League. With two years left on his current contract, a season long loan deal looks the most realistic proposition. Key to persuading Porteous to return home is the lure of regaining his place in the Scotland squad before the World Cup qualifying campaign gets underway in Denmark in September. Capped 14 times for the senior team Porteous made his last appearance as a late replacement for Anthony Ralston in the first leg win over Greece in the Nations League play-off. Scotland begin their campaign to reach next year's World Cup finals in Canada, Mexico and the United States when they play group favourites Denmark away in Copenhagen in September.
