Francisco Lindor's tough 0-for-5 emblematic of Mets star's cold stretch: ‘Gotta get it going'

Francisco Lindor was far from the only thing wrong with the Mets offense Friday night.
But in the aftermath of a loss to the Reds, after Lindor popped out to the second baseman in shallow right field — to cap an 0-for-5 night — as the potential tying run to extinguish a comeback attempt, he took plenty of the blame.

'I mean, I gotta swing at good pitches, No. 1,' Lindor said after the Mets' 8-4 defeat. 'I gotta start impacting the ball a little bit better. … Just not to the standards that the hitting coaches have here for all of us and not up to the standard that I have for myself, as well. Give credit to [Reds starter Nick] Lodolo, but I gotta be better, for sure.'

Despite entering the night with hits in nine of 12 July games, Lindor said his at-bats for the last month or month-and-a-half have been 'up and down.'

He has hit .225 with a .706 OPS since June 1 after entering the month with .283 and .839 marks, respectively, that helped turn his season around after a brutal start — allowing him to secure his first All-Star Game appearance as a Met.

Against Lodolo, though, Lindor fouled out, grounded out to the pitcher and popped out to the first baseman.

Then, he grounded out in the eighth before his 207-foot fly out to shallow right field for the final out after the Mets collected two runs and loaded the bases.
'Just gotta get it going,' Lindor said of his recent at-bats.

Lindor took responsibility, but the Mets managed just two hits between the third and eighth innings against Lodolo, who struck out seven across seven innings, and Graham Ashcraft.

Juan Soto homered for the 24th time this season, but the top four hitters in the Mets lineup went just 1-for-16, with Mark Vientos and Pete Alonso each going 0-for-4.

A pressing issue to solve after the Midsummer Classic revolved around an overreliance on Soto, who continued his scorching tear in June and July by picking right up where he left off with the 412-foot blast in the first.
And for one night, that glaring problem surfaced again.
'I thought today we mishit a few balls,' manager Carlos Mendoza said. 'Got under a lot of pitches there. Hit a few pop-ups there. Then we chase. I just feel like those middle innings [recently], we're having a hard time putting a rally together. … We're not passing the baton, if you want to call it that way.'

Cardinals training camp: CB Jaden Davis placed on injured reserve with knee injury
Jaden Davis lands on injured reserve with a knee injury along with Star Thomas. The Arizona Cardinals not only lost one cornerback to a knee injury. They lost two. The team announced that it placed both cornerback Star Thomas V and cornerback Jaden Davis on injured reserve on Sunday. Both suffered knee injuries. Thomas suffered a torn ACL on Friday and is done for the season. Davis exited practice on Thursday. Head coach Jonathan Gannon said Davis "has a possibility of possibly coming back" later in the season. Davis, drafted in the seventh round last year out of Miami, still has not played an NFL game. He spent all last season on the practice squad. The Cardinals filled one of the two vacancies created by the moves to IR by signing cornerback Steven Gilmore. Gilmore is the younger brother of five-time Pro Bowl and two-time All-Pro cornerback Stephon Gilmore. Ryan McMahon off to fast start with Yankees: `First impressions are usually pretty big'
NEW YORK (AP) — Two games into his New York Yankees career, Ryan McMahon has fans talking. And in this case, that's a positive. 'First impressions are usually pretty big,' he said Sunday after sparking a comeback with a tying, two-run double and some dazzling defense in a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies that stopped a three-game losing streak. Acquired on Friday from Colorado, the 2024 All-Star went 1 for 3 and made a nifty backhand stop in his pinstriped debut Saturday, a 9-4 defeat. After the Phillies went ahead 2-0 Sunday against Carlos Rodón on second-inning homers by Nick Castellanos and rookie Otto Kemp, McMahon grounded a Zack Wheeler curveball into the right-field corner in the bottom half. 'He looks great so far. Hopefully he continues it,' Yankees closer Devin Williams said. 'I've obviously played against him in the past and he was a good player and I'm happy to have him here.' McMahon also singled and was hit by a pitch. He's reached base five times in two games with the Yankees. His glove work has been even more impressive. McMahon easily fielded J.T. Realmuto's 104.3 mph grounder in the second, jumped to grab Bryce Harper's looper leading off the fourth, then ranged to his glove side for a fifth-inning grounder with two out, slid and spun and then threw out speedy Trea Turner at first. 'Three big plays that stood out to me,' Rodón said. 'It's a whirlwind for a guy that gets traded and has to figure things out. So it's a pleasure to have him.' McMahon made 129 errors over six minor league seasons. He credited his defense to former Rockies teammates Nolan Arenado, Trevor Story and DJ LeMahieu, who have combined for 13 All-Star selections and 14 Gold Gloves. 'When you have those three guys and you're 20 years old and in your first big league camp, you're going to learn a lot if you just shut up and watch and pay attention,' McMahon said. McMahon arrived in the Bronx on Friday night following his trade from the Rockies, the team that drafted him in 2013. He took only one suitcase of clothing and his gear, and is staying in a hotel through the homestand. His wife Natalie and 1 1/2-year-old daughter Austyn Brooke remained behind. 'We'll figure that out, man,' he said. 'My wife, she's a rock star. She's awesome. She'll let me get settled a little bit and then they'll probably come out next homestand.' Yankees players, led by captain Aaron Judge, Gerrit Cole and Giancarlo Stanton, have been working at getting to know McMahon. 'Real easy to be around. I kind of sat with him a little bit today in the locker room, just kind of shooting it a little with him and he feels, to me, he feels comfortable,' said manager Aaron Boone, a third baseman obtained by the Yankees from Cincinnati at the 2003 trade deadline. 'It's allowing them space, allowing them to be themselves but also trying to really get to know them a little bit and making them immediately feel part of it,' Boone said. Austin Wells hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly and Trent Grisham an RBI single against Wheeler (9-4), who tied his career high with three hit batters — including two in a row ahead of the double by McMahon, who himself was hit by a pitch in the sixth. A smile on his face, McMahon left the clubhouse to address some of the logistics of the trade. 'I've got a lot of calls to make today, that's for sure,' he said. ___ AP MLB:

Alex Bregman hits 2-run HR, Red Sox take series vs. Dodgers with 4-3 win
BOSTON (AP) — Alex Bregman hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the fifth inning and the Boston Red Sox hung on to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 Sunday for a series win. Rookie Roman Anthony added an RBI triple for the Red Sox, who captured their first series since the All-Star break. Boston had a 10-game winning streak entering the break. Boston closer Aroldis Chapman walked off the mound with an apparent injury in the eighth inning. In to face the top of the Dodgers' order, his velocity was noticeably down to the mid-90 mph on his fastball instead of the high 90s to low 100s. Michael Conforto hit a solo homer and had two doubles for the Dodgers. Jordan Hicks entered and got out of a two-on, one-out mess when Teoscar Hernández lined to second and Ceddanne Rafaela dove to the bag, beating Hyeseong Kim for double play. Hicks pitched the ninth for his second save. Brennan Bernardino (4-2) got an out in relief for the victory. Facing his former team for the first time since getting the final out of the World Series for them last fall, Boston right-hander Walker Buehler gave up three runs in 4 2/3 innings. The Dodgers had opened a 3-1 lead in the fourth against Buehler when Conforto homered and Mookie Betts added an RBI single. Dodgers starter Dustin May (6-7) allowed four runs in five innings. Key moment Bregman hit a first-pitch sweeper from May over the Green Monster that caromed off a billboard onto the field. May dropped his head back in disbelief after the ball left Bregman's bat. Key stat Boston improved to 11-2 in its past 13 games at Fenway Park. Up next Dodgers: RHP Yoshinobu Yamamoto (8-7, 2.55 ERA) is scheduled to start Monday in Cincinnati. Red Sox: RHP Richard Fitts (1-4, 4.86) is set to start Monday at Minnesota. ___ AP MLB:
