Nearly 90% of videogame developers use AI agents, Google study shows

By Zaheer Kachwala (Reuters) -A Google Cloud survey showed that 87% of videogame developers are using artificial intelligence agents to streamline and automate tasks, as the industry focuses on optimizing costs following a wave of record layoffs. Most of the respondents in the report, published on Monday, said AI was helping automate cumbersome and repetitive tasks, freeing developers to focus on more creative concerns. Gaming publishers have turned to AI to deal with the industry-wide challenge of ballooning development costs and elongated creation cycles stemming from high fan expectations and intense competition. The study, conducted by Google and The Harris Poll, surveyed 615 game developers in the U.S., South Korea, Norway, Finland, and Sweden in late June and early July. Around 44% of developers use agents to optimize content and process information such as text, voice, code, audio and video rapidly, enabling them to exercise autonomy and make decisions, the study showed. But the use of AI in videogames is a highly contentious topic, with many within the industry concerned over potential job losses, intellectual property disputes and lower pay. Last year, Hollywood's videogame performers went on strike over AI and pay issues, while studios shut down and more than 10,000 people lost their jobs. The industry is expected to gain momentum this year and the next, with the launch of premium titles and new consoles seen to boost spending. According to the survey, 94% of developers expect AI to reduce overall development costs in the long term. That, even as roughly one in four developers find it challenging to precisely measure the return on investment of their AI implementations, while costs associated with integrating the technology are also high. Around 63% of those surveyed expressed concerns over data ownership as the legality around licensing and who exactly owns AI-generated content remains unclear. Finsbury Food Group buys majority stake in Lola's Cupcakes

UK bakery manufacturer Finsbury Food Group has acquired a 70% stake in direct-to-consumer business Lola's Cupcakes for an undisclosed sum. Finsbury Food Group, which supplies bakery products to retailers and foodservice customers, said the acquisition was part of a strategy to make "targeted investments in innovative, high-growth segments" of the market. Lola's Cupcakes sells cakes and brownies through its own stores and via the DTC channel. E-commerce accounts for around half of the company's sales, with the business using 45 kiosks and collection lockers. In 2024, Lola's Cupcakes generated a turnover of £26.2m ($35.5m), up from £24.9m a year earlier. The company's profit after tax was £1.6m compared to just under £610,000 in 2023. The business employs around 400 people, operating from a facility in north London. John Duffy, the CEO of Finsbury Food Group said described the deal as "an exciting milestone" for the company. He added: 'It represents another step forward in Finsbury's acquisition journey as a buy-and-build business, allowing us to enter the direct-to-consumer market for the first time. 'Lola's is an entrepreneurial and much-loved UK brand with a strong digital presence, and together, we see significant potential for growth and innovation across both Finsbury and Lola's.' Lola's Cupcakes will continue to be led by managing director Asher Budwig, who said: 'With Finsbury's expertise in manufacturing, and the broader support of the group, I'm confident we can take Lola's to exciting new heights by building on what we've already achieved and exploring new opportunities together.' Finsbury was sold to Isle of Man-based asset manager DBAY Advisors two years ago eight months after the baker had snapped up UK cake maker Lees Foods. Germany awards 2.27GW in solar tender round

Germany's Federal Network Agency has selected 258 projects with a combined capacity of 2,271MW in its latest ground-mounted solar tender round. The awarded values were significantly below the established maximum price, indicating robust competition in the sector, and Federal Network Agency president Klaus Mueller commented: "Competition is still keeping award prices well below the price ceiling." The latest round of tenders, aimed at ground-mounted systems and solar installations on non-building structures, was oversubscribed, with the agency seeking to support projects totalling 2,266MW. By the deadline of 1 July 2025, the agency had received 313 bids with a combined volume of 2,820MW. The successful bids were priced between €0.04 per kilowatt hour (kWh) and €0.0626 per kWh. The average volume-weighted award value stood at €0.0484 per kWh, which, while slightly above the previous tender's average of €0.0466 per kWh, remained well under the price cap of €0.068 per kWh. Regionally, Bavaria led with 106 winning projects and a combined capacity of 689MW. It was followed by Rhineland-Palatinate with 23 successful bids for 251MW, and Lower Saxony with 18 awards totalling 250MW. The earlier tender round had seen the awarding of contracts for 271 projects with a capacity of 2,638MW. In mid August 2025, Germany's solar industry raised concerns over a proposal by Economy Minister Katherina Reiche to end feed-in subsidies for new small-scale rooftop photovoltaic systems. Germany experienced a notable rise in energy consumption during the first half of 2025. Energy usage in Europe's largest economy reached 187.3 million tonnes of coal equivalent, a 2.3% rise from 183.1 million during the same period in 2024, according to a report released by the industry statistics group AG Energiebilanzen.
