Terrifying moment lorry crashes through central reservation and towards incoming traffic on motorway

Daily Mail04-08-2025
This is the terrifying moment a lorry crashes through the central reservation and towards incoming traffic on a busy motorway.
The heavy vehicle careered across the M5 before speeding the wrong way down the road, narrowly missing a £100k Porsche.
Peter Stone, 55, had been driving home from a family trip to St Agnes, Cornwall in his Porsche 911 at around 12.30pm on Friday when the truck started heading straight at him.
Incredibly, no one was injured in the chaos but the motorway was closed in both directions for just over an hour.
Now hair-raising footage has emerged of the incident which Mr Stone claims left him 'two seconds from serious injury'.
The clip, taken from his dashcam, sees Mr Stone driving in the outside lane with multiple cars in close proximity.
Out of nowhere, a bright yellow lorry comes racing across the central reservation, smashing the protective rail, and onto his side of the M5.
Kicking up a vast cloud of dust as it hurtles along, the truck bumps agressively at speed in the wrong direction.
The 4x4 in front has just enough time to make a slight adjustment and avoid the lorry, while Mr Stone himself managed to make a dramatic lurch into the middle lane to miss the heavy vehicle by a split second.
Chunks of debris are left in the lorry's wake while a shot from the rear view dashcam shows cars behind Mr Stone narrowly avoiding the vehicle.
As he passes the truck's entry point in his Porsche, Mr Stone can see the significant damage inflicted on the rail in the central reservation.
The father-of-two said: 'It literally came out of nowhere. I think I had less than two seconds to move before getting flattened by the tipper driver.
'It was quite difficult, my car is quite low down and the black car [in front] sort of obscured my view.
'I only really saw the truck - luckily it was yellow, so your peripheral vision can pick up bright colours and stuff.
'The black car moved out in front of me, I had a white motorhome beside me and I managed to go in between them.'
The driver, who runs a fleet of vehicles for a waste company and is from Reading, added that it was 'remarkable' nobody was hurt.
'It was just a reflex reaction really,' he said, 'I'm very surprised no one actually smashed into the truck.
'I did speak to the transport company because I wanted to make sure no one was injured before offering to share the footage.
'I pulled over straight away and called 999, assuming there was going to be some serious injuries.
'Fortunately, as far as I'm aware, no one was injured - which is quite remarkable.'
Mr Stone captured the scene of destruction on his front and rear dashcams, which were installed by the dealership when he purchased the vehicle back in December.
The father, who has an HGV licence himself, said: 'You've seen videos of trucks crossing central reservations, but for it to happen straight in front of you is bizarre.
'Until I reviewed the video I hadn't even realised I was in the fast lane. In my recall I thought I must have been in the middle lane, there's no way I could have been in the third lane.
'I've had two nights of uninterrupted sleep replaying it in my mind, trying to come to terms with basically probably being two seconds from serious injury or even worse.'
A National Highways spokesperson said no serious injuries had been reported following the crash.
Police and ambulance attended the crash which caused the M5 to be closed in both directions for just over an hour, with lanes one and two reopening at around 1.30pm.
Repairs took place overnight and the road fully reopened at around 3.30am on Saturday morning, the spokesperson added.
Devon & Cornwall Police and South West Ambulance Service were contacted for comment.
A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust said: 'We were called at 12:20hrs on Friday 01 August to a road traffic collision near Bradninch.
'We sent two double-crewed land ambulances, an operations officer, a first responder and the hazardous area response team to the scene.'

Tesla targets UK home energy supply by 2026 – taking on Centrica and Octopus Energy

TESLA is planning to supply energy to UK households as early as 2026. Elon Musk's firm has applied for a licence in order to take on energy companies including British Gas owner Centrica and Octopus Energy. The company hopes to start supplying energy to homes and businesses across England, Scotland and Wales as soon as next year. Tesla Energy Ventures applied for the licence last month, according to a new filing published by regulator Ofgem. The electric car manufacturer also has a solar energy and battery storage business. The news comes around two years after Tesla had first started hiring for a head of operations who would run its proposed energy supply business. Tesla has been involved in the UK energy market since 2020, when it was granted a licence to be an electricity generator. In the US, the group has been an electricity supplier in Texas for the past three years. The development comes amid a backdrop of waning demand for Tesla's electric vehicles across Europe in recent months. Industry figures showed an almost 60 per cent plunge in the number of new Tesla registrations in the UK last month, compared with last year. Data showed that 987 new vehicles were registered in July, compared with 2,462 in the same month in 2024. 3 Inside Elon Musk's Tesla diner of the future staffed by ROBOTS with drive-in movie screens & burgers in Cybertruck boxes TOY WORKER BONANZA THE founder of Britain's biggest toy chain is handing control of the business to his 1,900 employees. 2 Reasons Why Hybrids Present More Complicated Fire Risks

Widely considered the best M5 manual transmission model, the E39 M5 wasn't the most powerful, but it was the most engaging. Hybrid fires: Risks beyond battery size A transportation risk mitigation expert has explained in an interview with Autoblog why hybrids can present more complicated fire risks that people haven't thought about. William S. Lerner, a consultant for lithium-ion battery and hydrogen technology safety in transportation, conceded that since hybrid batteries are smaller, they present a lower fire risk because the state of charge matters. Still, Lerner clarified a key difference between mild hybrids and their plug-in electric vehicle (PHEV) counterparts. 0:05 / 0:09 When will Toyota build an EV with its simulated manual transmission? Watch More 'Once you get into a plug-in hybrid, what you're doing is you're adding an electrical current from the charger to the vehicle. There's roughly a 20-30% chance that something is going to happen when the vehicle is plugged in either on the charger or the vehicle end. When you start charging the vehicles, people don't obey the charge to 80% rule, and the problem then becomes that the batteries are depreciating assets. Just like your mobile phone, it will last 600-2000 cycles, but after that, it starts degrading, and when it starts degrading, the average tendency is to top it off even more to keep it at 100%,' Lerner said. In other words, PHEVs pose higher fire risks than mild hybrids since they're regularly plugged in and charged, resulting in more electrical current flowing through the battery, leading to greater chances of charging faults. Additionally, drivers are frequently not charging to manufacturers' recommendations of 80%, and aging batteries getting charged to 100% have a higher chance of experiencing thermal issues. A Ford Fusion hybrid vehicle on fire just north of Austin, Texas, 2022 — Source: Getty Lerner also explained possible dangers associated with mild hybrids, using BMW's 2025 X5 as an example. The transportation safety expert noted that space constraints led to BMW putting the 2025 X5's mild hybrid battery in parallel with the engine, and that the model also has a gas tank with HDPE plastic melting at 348 degrees Fahrenheit. 'What you're dealing with in the [2025 BMW X5 mild hybrid] is a first responder going in and thinking 'ok, this is a gasoline fire, and these are my tactics,' but if this 48-volt battery catches fire, it can shoot its cells 65 feet and seven inches.' He added that if the battery catches fire, it'll cause the gas tank to melt, and now you have a gasoline fire plus a battery fire. 'By mixing the dual fuels, you're doubling the problem.' Still, Lerner clarified that certain automakers, like Audi, have mild hybrid configurations that are less problematic, and the main point is that first responders need to know that when there's a live lithium-ion battery present, they could be fighting multiple fire types. First responders and dual fire scenarios When asked how first responders can do differently to deal with hybrid fires, Lerner responded: 'If it's a hybrid, you have gasoline, and if the gasoline tank is involved, the tank can purge its entire contents. We also know that battery packs can shoot their cells, so the first responder has to be mindful of both episodes.' Lerner also emphasized that hybrid fires burn at 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit, which is significantly higher than standard gasoline fires that tend to burn at 1,200-1,500 degrees Fahrenheit. 2025 BMW X5 — Source: Getty Final thoughts Lerner isn't saying that mild hybrids, PHEVs, gasoline cars, or pure EVs are more dangerous. Instead, he's illustrating that there's a double chance for something to fail with a hybrid versus an internal combustion engine (ICE) model, and if one component fails, it affects the other. For example, a failing battery could affect the gas tank by burning it, and if the tank fails, its fire load can melt the outside casing of the battery and cause the battery to short out, resulting in two fires with different strategies for suppression. 'You can put out a gasoline fire, and that vehicle becomes inert. With a battery vehicle, mild hybrid, PHEV—those lithium-ion batteries are never put out. They're only suppressed, and they can reignite for up to months,' Lerner said. About the Author Cody Carlson View Profile

Ian Callum Wants To Turn The Aston Martin Vanquish Into A Strangely Beautiful Wagon

Former Aston Martin Designer Wants Another Shot Ian Callum is arguably one of the finest automotive designers of our time, having worked on several of the most timeless cars of the last 40 years, including the millennial Aston Martin Vanquish. Now in charge of his own design firm, Callum Designs, he's proposed a more practical take on the V12-powered grand tourer, revealing a concept for a Vanquish Shooting Brake, something that Zagato did back in 2017. However, that design was based on the Vanquish of the time, and Callum's is based on the one he penned for 2001, trying to find a place somewhere in the middle. There's just one thing holding this car back from becoming a reality: an interested buyer. Previous Pause Next Unmute 0:00 / 0:09 Full screen Chevrolet says a next-gen Camaro is still possible. What could it look like? Watch More A Slightly Odd Wagon The Vanquish 25 Shooting Brake, as it's been named, is listed on the 'Portfolio' section of the Callum Designs site, where the firm shares the ideas it has for reimagining future cars in the hopes that wealthy buyers will take a liking to them and ask for one to be commissioned. These are purely conceptual until that happens, so we won't see Callum's Vanquish wagon on the lawns of Pebble Beach at Monterey Car Week this month. If it ever does get there, it'll certainly look unique. The modernized lower side intakes look like something Jaguar might have produced around this time (where Ian Callum wound up after being contracted by Aston Martin), and the vented hood is also reminiscent of that era's Jag XKR. The diamond-faced wheels add a touch of modernity, as does the beveled glasshouse, and the side skirts with their lower leading edge and gilled flics call to mind single-seat racecars. At the back, the rear view will be narrow, but the car will look dramatic, with the muscular rear arches flowing into an upturned ducktail spoiler. Further down, more carbon fiber either side of the redesigned diffuser reduces the visual height of the car, though from the front three-quarter angle, this vehicle almost has a crossover-like stance to it. In profile, the front two-thirds of the car looks particularly modern, but the rear gives this writer images of a BMW Z1 from the late 1980s, and the wheels make me think of a Tesla, especially with red brake calipers behind them. Does Anybody Want A V12 Wagon? Whether we agree on the looks or not, Callum would surely allow some tweaks to be made, promoting this project as something that would be made 'exclusively for you,' calling it 'a bespoke masterpiece built around your vision, down to the last stitch' – but the looks aren't as exciting as the concept of a practical V12-powered GT that can fit skiis and luggage, something that Ferrari customers have desired and received since the FF. That must be enticing to someone, and the fact that there will certainly be far fewer than the 99 Vanquish Zagato Shooting Brakes out there surely counts for something. Naturally, this sort of bespoke creation will be deep in six- (if not seven-) figure range. About the Author Sebastian Cenizo View Profile
