Cavaliers president of basketball operations Koby Altman signs extension

CLEVELAND (AP) — Cavaliers president of basketball operations Koby Altman has signed a contract extension through the 2029-30 season.
The Cavaliers also announced Monday night general manager Mike Gansey, assistant GM Brandon Weems, vice president of basketball operations/general counsel Jason Hillman and vice president of basketball strategy and personnel Jon Nichols received extensions.
'Koby Altman has demonstrated that he is the right person to lead this franchise. He is not only an outstanding team-builder, but he has also created an exceptional culture that transcends the basketball side of our business and serves as a positive foundation and philosophy for the entire franchise,' Cavaliers chairman Dan Gilbert said in a statement. 'Koby not only has a great nose for basketball talent, but he has recruited and developed extraordinary front office talent as well. This unique combination has positioned our franchise to compete for championships for years to come. The decision to extend Koby and his team is not solely based on recent success, but rather the entire body of work since he took over the role in 2018.'
Altman has been with Cleveland since 2012. He has been in his current position since January 2022 after being named general manager in July 2017.
The Cavaliers won 64 games this past season and finished with the best record in the Eastern Conference for the first time since 2016, when they won their only NBA championship.
Cleveland swept Miami in the first round but was eliminated by eventual Eastern Conference champion Indiana in five games in the conference semifinals.
Altman rebuilt the roster after four straight trips to the NBA Finals (2015-18) and a 2016 NBA title during LeBron James' second stint.
Altman drafted Darius Garland and Evan Mobley, the franchise's first NBA Defensive Player of the Year. He also acquired Donovan Mitchell and Jarrett Allen in trades.
His boldest move though came at the end of the 2023-24 season when he fired J.B. Bickerstaff as coach and replaced him with Kenny Atkinson.
With Atkinson in charge, Cleveland got off to a fast start this past season, becoming the fourth team in NBA history to win at least its first 15 games. It is the third team in league history to have at least three streaks of 12 wins in a season, including a 16-game run from Feb. 3 to March 14.
Atkinson was named NBA Coach of the Year.
The Cavaliers are above both aprons of the salary cap, but they acquired veteran point guard Lonzo Ball from Chicago for forward Isaac Okoro and signed forward/center Larry Nance Jr.

Knicks reportedly extended Mikal Bridges for Giannis Antetokounmpo reason

The New York Knicks locked down small forward Mikal Bridges to a hefty four-year, $150 million contract extension Thursday, which included a player option for the 2029-30 NBA season. However, it seems that the Knicks wanted to assure that one other piece of business was truly off the table before giving Bridges his extension. According to Sam Amico of HoopsWire, the Knicks reportedly "got intel" that Milwaukee Bucks franchise star Giannis Antetokounmpo would not be requesting a trade out of Milwaukee before making the deal with their own small forward. (4) Sam Amico on X: "Source: Knicks Got Intel Giannis Antetokounmpo Won't Request Trade From Bucks Before Signing Mikal Bridges To Extension / X After the Bucks released Damian Lillard at the beginning of the month, and the way that the two-time MVP was acting on social media, such as unfollowing the team on Instagram, it seems like all signs were pointing to Giannis heading to a different team. Antetokounmpo has been with the Bucks ever since the team selected him with the 15th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. Since then, he has led the team to the 2021 NBA Championship, earning Finals MVP honors, was awarded the 2018-19 and 2019-20 NBA MVP, has been named an NBA All-Star since the 2017 season and a first-team All-NBA team member since 2019, fully cementing his status as one of the game's finest.

Jayson Tatum's Monday Injury Update Has Celtics Fans Worried After Noticing One Key Detail

Jayson Tatum's Monday Injury Update Has Celtics Fans Worried After Noticing One Key Detail originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Celtics will have a much different look heading into the 2025-26 NBA season. Just one year removed from winning a championship, the team has seen several key players depart, including Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis and likely Al Horford. But the biggest loss may have been their All-NBA superstar, Jayson Tatum, who suffered a torn Achilles in Game 4 of the second-round series against the New York Knicks. This ended the rest of his playoffs and has put the upcoming season in jeopardy. The Celtics went on to lose to the Knicks in six. Jayson Tatum Has Taken A Step In His Recovery On Monday, Tatum attended the 5th Annual Charity Golf Tournament and Silent Auction, an event hosted by the Jayson Tatum Foundation. The former Duke Blue Devils star posted a few videos from the event on his Instagram Story where he was seen moving without a walking boot. Just a day earlier, however, Tatum had appeared at another event hosted by his foundation wearing the boot. This places him at roughly 11 weeks post-Achilles tear, which aligns with the standard recovery timeline. Fans Noticed Something Concerning About Jayson Tatum While shedding the walking boot is a positive step in Tatum's recovery, fans quickly noticed that his injured leg appeared significantly smaller. This is likely due to muscle atrophy, a common effect of prolonged inactivity. Still, they took to social media to leave their thoughts. "His legs are super skinny," one fan said. "It's insane what a few months of muscle atrophy will do. His right leg looks significantly smaller," added another. "Man that leg is small Take your time JT," wrote a third. "Look how skinny that leg is. Holy (expletive)," commented a fourth. "Looking like KD out there lol," claimed a fifth. "Leg looking like a toothpick," posted a sixth. With Tatum likely out all of next season, the Celtics will likely rely heavily on Jaylen Brown, who is also recovering from offseason surgery. Derrick White, Payton Pritchard and Anfernee Simons, who was acquired from the Holiday trade, will probably have larger roles as story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 28, 2025, where it first appeared.

Lakers jersey history No. 1/No. 3 — Trevor Ariza

Through the 2024-25 season, the Los Angeles Lakers have had a total of 506 players suit up for them, going back to their days in Minneapolis. Some were forgettable, some were serviceable, some were good and a select few were flat-out legendary. As the Lakers approach their 80th season of existence (they were founded back in 1946 as the Detroit Gems in the National Basketball League), LeBron Wire is taking a look at each player who has worn their jersey, whether it has been a purple and gold one or the ones they donned back in the Midwest during their early years. We will now take a look at Trevor Ariza, who played a pivotal role in the Lakers winning the 2009 NBA championship. Ariza, a 6-foot-8 forward, went to Westchester High School in Los Angeles and then played one season at the University of California, Los Angeles. He was a second-round pick in the 2004 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks, but he amounted to little in his first three seasons as a pro. The Lakers sent big man Brian Cook and wing Maurice Evans to the Orlando Magic for Ariza early in the 2007-08 season. Ariza arrived as essentially a wet ball of clay, and coach Phil Jackson went to work molding him into a key part of the team. He quickly emerged as an energetic team defender and a strong finisher in transition. His 3-point shooting gradually improved as well, and he eventually moved into L.A.'s starting lineup late in the 2008-09 season. In that year's playoffs, Ariza averaged 11.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.6 steals a game while shooting 49.7% from the field and 47.6% from 3-point range as the Lakers won the NBA championship. He had a couple of steals in crunch time during Game 1 and Game 3 of the Western Conference finals to get the Lakers over the hump. He left that summer to join the Houston Rockets, and although he jumped from team to team in the years to come, he enjoyed a productive career as a serviceable role player. In 2018, he flirted with another ring before the Rockets blew a 3-2 series lead and were eliminated by the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference finals. Ariza came back to the Lakers for the 2021-22 season, but by that point, he was done being a viable NBA player. That turned out to be his swan song in the league.
