Lift Totapuri mango ban: Siddaramaiah writes to Andhra CM

Bengaluru: The order issued by the Chittoor district administration in Andhra Pradesh banning the purchase of Karnataka's Totapuri Mango has put farmers in Kolar and Chikkaballapur in distress. Following this, the Karnataka government's Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh, who intervened, has written a letter to the Andhra Pradesh government, requesting it to lift the ban. Now CM Siddaramaiah himself has come to the rescue of Karnataka's farmers. The Chittoor district administration has written a letter to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu asking him to instruct the district administration to lift the ban imposed on the purchase of Karnataka's Totapuri mango. It is learnt that the Chittoor District Magistrate had issued an order on June 07 prohibiting the entry of Totapuri mangoes from other states into the district. This sudden and unilateral move has caused great distress to the mango growers of Karnataka, especially those who grow Totapuri mangoes in significant quantities in the border areas. These farmers have long been linked to Chittoor-based processing units to sell their produce. The current restriction has disrupted this well-established supply chain and caused significant post-harvest losses, which will directly impact the livelihood of thousands of farmers, Siddaramaiah mentioned in his letter to the Andhra CM. Such measures taken without prior consultation or coordination are against the spirit of the cooperative federal system. I am concerned that this may lead to tension and retaliatory measures. The stakeholders are already expressing their displeasure, which may disrupt the inter-state movement of vegetables and other agricultural commodities, Siddaramaiah mentioned. 'I urge you (Chandrababu Naidu) to intervene in this matter and request you to issue necessary directions to the district authorities to immediately revoke the order of the Chittoor district administration,' Siddaramaiah wrote in the letter. Siddaramaiah urged that this issue should be taken seriously and prompt steps should be taken to restore smooth movement of agricultural produce in the interest of farmers' welfare.

Garbage-free Bandar is goal: Minister Ravindra

Machilipatnam: Minister for Mines, Geology, and Excise Kollu Ravindra on Thursday stated that his goal is to realise a 'garbage-free Bandar.' He made these remarks at the inauguration of garbage compacting vehicles at the Machilipatnam dumping yard, where he was joined by RTC Chairman Konakalla Narayana Rao and DCMS Chairman Bandi Ramakrishna. Minister Ravindra announced that the work to clear the dumping yard is on track, fulfilling a promise made by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu. 'The Chief Minister gave us a promise on October 2 and by this coming October 2, we will remove the dumping yard entirely,' he asserted. He added that plans are being drafted to create wealth from waste. Recalling Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu's previous visit to Bandar, where he personally observed the garbage and dumping yard issues, Minister Ravindra highlighted the Chief Minister's commitment to resolving the problem. As part of this commitment, Taruni Associates has been entrusted with solid waste management responsibilities at a cost of Rs 3.75 crore. This initiative will involve segregating wet and dry waste, along with the separation of materials like iron. The Chief Minister has instructed that the entire dumping yard area be converted into a park by October 2. 'We will meticulously follow his directives and establish a park in that area. Local officials are urged to cooperate in this endeavour,' Minister Ravindra stated. Machilipatnam generates approximately 80-90 tonnes of waste daily. To manage this, three compactors worth Rs 3.30 crore have been procured and will be used to clear all accumulated waste. The Minister also mentioned that steps are being taken to establish a waste-to-energy plant locally. He criticised the previous administration for neglecting the municipality, which he claimed led to the current challenges.

Siddaramaiah urges Andhra CM to withdraw ban on entry of Totapuri mangoes into Chittoor district

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has requested N. Chandrababu Naidu, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh to withdraw the ban on entry of 'Totapuri mangoes from Karnataka into Chittoor district. Mr. Siddaramaiah has written a letter to Mr. Naidu in this regard on June 11, stating his 'deep concern over an order reportedly issued by the District Collector of Chittoor on June 7, imposing a ban on the entry of Totapuri mangoes from other States into the district.' 'I understand that multidisciplinary enforcement teams comprising officials from the revenue, police, forest, and marketing departments have been deployed at the inter-State check-posts adjoining Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to implement this directive. However, this abrupt and unilateral move has caused considerable hardship to mango growers in Karnataka, particularly those in the border regions who cultivate Totapuri mangoes in substantial quantities,' he said. 'These farmers have long relied on the robust linkages with Chittoor-based processing and pulp extraction units for marketing their produce. The current restriction has disrupted this well-established supply chain and threatens significant post-harvest losses, directly impacting the livelihoods of thousands of farmers. Moreover, actions of this nature, taken without prior consultation or coordination, run contrary to the spirit of cooperative federalism. I am also concerned that this may lead to avoidable tension and retaliatory measures, with stakeholders already expressing discontent that could potentially disrupt the inter-State movement of vegetables and other agricultural commodities,' he further stated .
