
Art in Your Hand: Japanese Umbrellas Brighten Gray Skies
When closed, they're slim and refined. When opened, colorful washi paper stretches out along elegant bamboo spokes in a striking radial pattern.
Each umbrella crafted by 37-year-old artisan Mikiko Kawai is unique, featuring vibrant colors and intricate designs. In Japan's gray rainy season, they almost seem to chase the clouds away.
A wagasa 's frame and handle are made from all-natural materials like bamboo and wood, while the canopy is crafted from washi paper. They come in various styles: from the detailed janome-gasa (snake-eye umbrellas) made famous in children's songs, to the sturdier bangasa , and parasols designed for sun protection.
Kawai's "Sakura Wagasa" drew international attention when she created it for a visiting Hollywood actress. Inspired by the cherry blossoms in the film and the actress's costume, the parasol was made with delicate, handmade sakura-pink washi, using paper mulberry grown in Gifu Prefecture's Mino City. It quickly became a hit on social media.
Floral-themed wagasa have been made since Japan's Showa era (1926–1989), and Kawai finds constant inspiration in their retro charm.
"Showa-era wagasa are surprisingly modern and stylish," she says. "I often draw on traditional color palettes, like the layered hues of Heian-period [794–1185] garments, to create something fresh yet timeless." One of her most popular designs is Tsukiyakko , a model passed down from the early Showa era and now revived at her workshop, Kasabiyori.
Once produced across Japan, wagasa became particularly prominent in Gifu City. The upper flow of the Nagara River brought essential materials such as high-quality Mino washi, bamboo, and oil. During the Edo period, even samurai were encouraged to take up umbrella-making as a sideline.
At its peak in the late 1940s, the Gifu region produced more than 12 million wagasa annually, according to the Gifu Wagasa Association. Today, although mass-produced Western umbrellas dominate the market, Gifu remains Japan's largest wagasa production area. These traditional umbrellas are still used in everyday life, on stage, and increasingly as decorative pieces or event props.
In an industry where production is typically divided among specialists, Kawai is unusual in that she completes every step herself. From assembling the bamboo ribs and gluing the washi paper, to oiling, sun-drying, and stitching the interior, she does everything by hand and uses no machines.
Even parasols, which do not require oiling, take around two months to finish. For a janome-gasa , the process can stretch to two and a half months.
Her work is also at the mercy of the weather. "Sun-drying takes about four days in summer and a week in winter," she explains. "I'm always watching the forecast, trying to find stretches without rain."
Although wagasa look beautiful in the rain, rain is the one thing she must avoid during production. Her reliance on sunlight and traditional, manual techniques contrasts sharply with today's efficiency-driven world. Still, she continues, step by step — assembling, pasting, drying — relying solely on her own hands.
As the mother of a one-year-old son, her working hours are limited. "I get maybe three to four hours during the day, and another two or three at night. That's all I can manage right now," Kawai says. Her creations are in high demand, and she's doing all she can to keep up.
Kawai hopes these stylish umbrellas, rich in Showa-era charm, will find a place in modern Reiwa-era life (2019–). Her goal is to craft umbrellas that are just as beautiful closed as they are when open.
"Umbrellas spend most of their time closed, so I want mine to look elegant even when they're not in use. I aim to make something that anyone can carry — regardless of age, gender, or whether they wear modern or traditional clothing," Kawai says.
"I take my time with each one, hoping to gradually reach the level of beauty and craftsmanship achieved by the artisans who came before me."

Recently, Geoffroy, the former Dom Pérignon champagne maker, was at Tetsu Sushi Bar for a sake-paired dinner (regularly h appening these days). At the dinner, Ge offroy said his dramatic pivot to sake was the creative latitude. 'It was like getting the keys to Home Depot and not just working with a table saw and router,' he said. 'And sake is umami in a glass with 20 times more than in wine. It loves food. It amplifies flavour. Sake makes food shine. Try it with pizza. They're umami bombs.' Tetsu chef-owner Satoshi Makise invited Geoffroy be cause IWA 5 is his favourite sake. 'I feel his style is similar to mine. It's still traditional but innovative. I love that. He creates different styles of sake using white wi ne making t echnology and ages it for different flavours. Makise created a menu to sync with IWA 5's terroir, the coastal Toyama prefecture known for exceptional seafood. Geoff roy blends three rices and five yeast strains for his sakes, and two of the yeasts are traditionally used in winemaking. The most startling sake dinner, however, was at The Victor, a steak house, a daring move as I'll bet 99 per cent of diners feel steaks are wedded to bold red wines. Steak, you say? I want tannins! Patrick Ellis, one of about a dozen non-Japanese 'sake samurais' in the world, was there to prove us wrong. It doesn't have the acidit y of wine, but what it does have is 20 to 25 times more umami than wine, and about 80 per cent of our taste r eceptors are for umami. 'It doesn't fight with food, as wine can.' Ellis adds that beef contains inosinate (formed when muscle tissue breaks down) and when glutamate and inosinate are consumed together, it's pure umami synergy. 'The perceived umami increases by up to 10 times than when consumed on their own,' Ellis says. At The Victor dinner, Dassai Junmai Dai Ginjo sake and Wagyu flatiron steak were very civil to one another, and might I say, they liked each other very much. Action! Kiss camera! The Victor is actually the perfect restaurant to test the sake-goes-with-anything claim because there's sushi and sashimi for a classic pairing and steaks to test out the synergy. Photo by Mia Stainsby Fanny Bay Oyster Bar is another non-Japanese restaurant that 'got' sake. Owner Malindi Taylor says it's a no-brainer. 'Oysters and sake are a natural pairing, complementing each other due to both being rich in natural umami flavours,' says Taylor. 'We've had sake on our menu for the last seven years. Guests love seeing it on our Happy Hour menu as it's not something you see everywhere.' At Michelin-recommended Yuwa Japanese restaurant, co-own er and sake sommelier Iori Kataoka feels sake is finally getting its due. 'We can't ignore sake anymore,' she says. Not like when she opened a first restaurant in the early 1990s, and all she could get was boxed sake. 'It was on top of a machine and only hot sake would come out,' she says. 'There were only two sake agents and now there are over 16, representing over 300 kinds of sakes.' And by the way, warm brews are no longer the sign o f loser sakes. Yuwa recently held a special event dinner with six Japanese sake makers and a barley shochu maker. 'Six different ideas for making sake, so it was super interesting,' Kataoka said. The dinner included a sparkling sake, which she says, has been hugely successful. 'It's compared to champagne. The bubbles don't last as long but has the taste a nd mouth feel .' A Wagyu beef dish was serv ed with Shichihonyari Muu Kimoto, a rich junmai sake known for going well with both seafood and meat. To make richer sakes, there's less polishing of the rice, keeping more of the husk. It takes skill as it can leav e unwanted flavours, Kataoka says. With every visit to Japan, she discovers sake makers using new techniques, from the rice milling and fermentation, to aging, and experimenting with different woods, and trying different waters and yeasts. Or, for that matter, staying 100 per cent true to terroir. 'France's wine sommeliers now do sake judging, applying wine analysis to judge colour, aroma, and taste, exactly like wine. Sake makers have always been detailed and specific but now there's technology to analyze everything and scientifically keep sakes consistent from year to year.' Restaurant owner and sake whisperer Miki Ellis, (Dachi, Niwa) another longtime evangelist, loves triggering 'aha' sake moments for guests. 'Our team is excited about sake and recommending them, and we try to focus on unusual styles, the weird and wonderful sides of what sake can be, to further add to 'aha'! We have a lot of somms (sommeliers) and industry people come in and say, 'Oh my god, I never thought of it this way.'' And she's squared off with wine people at private dinners pitting sake against wine for each course. 'Sake won! It surprised us,' she admits. 'I have yet to find food that doesn't go well with sake. In return, the women pay inflated prices for champagne and other expensive drinks while they flirt, sometimes splurging tens of thousands of dollars a night. Authorities are clamping down because of allegations that some women are being tricked into towering debts by hosts, and even into sex work to pay them off. Under a new law that took effect in June, taking advantage of women's romantic feelings to manipulate them into ordering overpriced drinks has been banned. This has sent shockwaves through an industry where pseudo-romance, from casual flirtation to after-hours sex, has long driven relationships with clients. John Reno, a star host in Tokyo's red-light district Kabukicho, said the crackdown was 'unsurprising' after 'scammer-like hosts increased'. Hosts, he told AFP, used to employ intimacy primarily to entertain women. But 'their mindset today is basically 'if you love me, then don't complain,' silencing women and exploiting their emotional dependence', the 29-year-old owner of Club J said. 'That's outright fraud,' he added, while denying that his Club J employees engage in any such practices. This signals a 'huge' morale crisis for hosts, Sena says. 'It's been the aspiration of many hosts to be called No.1, earn a title and become famous in this town,' he said. 'Now, they don't even know what they should strive for,' the 43-year-old added. For women, too, the rankings were a way to reassure themselves that the money they spent on their 'oshi (favourite)' hosts was not in vain — proof they were helping them ascend in the cutthroat hosts industry. The Goose soars to prestigious Fringe award
For The Goose, Ellen Peterson is the winner of this year's Harry S. Rintoul Award, an honour given annually to the best new original Manitoban work at the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival. The award, named for the late local playwright and founder of Theatre Projects Manitoba, has been handed out by the fringe since 2002. Alongside works by playwrights Adia Branconnier, Thomas McLeod, Heather Madill and Joseph Aragon, Peterson's name appeared twice on the shortlist, with the renowned theatre creator also earning a nod for Daredevils, starring Cora Matheson and Michael Strickland as high-wire artists making every move count above the Niagara Gorge. A prairie-set retelling of a Japanese folktale called The Crane Wife, The Goose starred Delf Gravert as a gentle farmer who frees a trapped goose before marrying the bird after she re-emerges in human form (Gwendolyn Collins). Maggie Nagle completed the cast as a hardbitten mother-in-law who begins weaving in seclusion to support the household.
