Media reports suggest that one of Sakariya's relatives is currently in jail and that he had come to the hearing with a petition seeking their release, a matter still pending before the courts. Delhi Police have contacted Gujarat Police to verify his name, address, and background.

How the Incident Happened
According to officials cited in media reports, the man, believed to be in his mid-30s to early 40s, first handed some papers to the Chief Minister before suddenly shouting and attacking her. Eyewitness accounts vary, with some claiming he pulled her hand and others alleging he struck her.
Live Events
Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar told the media that while the man's political affiliations were not confirmed, his remarks before the assault suggested frustration with a political party's position in Delhi.
Virendra Sachdeva explained the sequence of events, saying: 'The attacker tried to pull the Chief Minister by the hand during the hearing, leading to a scuffle in which her head may have hit a corner. Doctors have confirmed she is stable but in shock. She is a strong woman with a clear commitment to Delhi and remains determined to continue her work.'
Sachdeva dismissed speculation about stone-throwing or slapping, calling such claims 'incorrect and exaggerated.'
Political Condemnations
The attack has triggered sharp political reactions across parties.
Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa described it as a 'political conspiracy by rivals,' claiming: 'She worries for Delhi day and night. They cannot tolerate that a CM remains amid the public for hours. So, there seems to be a conspiracy behind this. Delhi Police is investigating, and all facts will come out.'
Another Delhi Minister, Kapil Mishra, called the incident an 'unforgivable crime.' He said: 'A woman, a daughter, who is dedicated day and night to the service of Delhi – those who attack her and those who orchestrate it are both cowards and criminals.'
From the Opposition, Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav said the incident exposed larger questions of women's safety: 'If the CM of Delhi is not safe, how can a common man or woman be safe?'
Former Delhi CM and AAP leader Atishi also condemned the assault, saying: 'Democracy allows space for disagreement and protest, but there is no place for violence. I hope Delhi Police takes the strictest action against the culprit.'
'The attack on Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is highly condemnable. In a democratic system, differences of opinion and opposition are acceptable, but there can be no place for violence. I am confident that the Delhi Police will take appropriate action. I hope the Chief Minister remains completely safe and healthy,' said former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal.
Police Action and Security Review
Police confirmed that the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) reached the CM's residence soon after the incident. An inquiry is underway, and additional security has been deployed around the Civil Lines residence. Officials described the incident as a 'serious lapse in security' and said protocols for Jan Sunwai events will now be reviewed.
Doctors have confirmed that Chief Minister Gupta is stable but recovering from shock. Despite the attack, Sachdeva said she has resolved not to cancel her daily schedule or her weekly Jan Sunwai programmes.
The investigation into Rajesh Sakariya's background and motive is ongoing, with further details expected once police complete their questioning.

Russia launches 574 drones, 40 missiles at Ukraine: 1 dead, US-owned Flex factory among targets; Zelenskyy eyes direct talks with Putin, Trump
Russia launched one of its largest aerial attacks of the year on Ukraine overnight, firing 574 drones and 40 ballistic and cruise missiles, the Ukrainian Air Force said Thursday. The strikes mostly targeted western regions, where Western-supplied military aid is believed to be stored and distributed. At least one person was killed and 15 others injured, officials said. In Lviv, three Russian cruise missiles armed with cluster munitions struck the city, damaging 26 residential buildings, a kindergarten and administrative facilities. Regional head Maksym Kozytskyi said one person died and three were hurt. It was Russia's third-largest drone assault this year and eighth-largest missile attack, according to official figures. While Moscow claimed it targeted 'enterprises of the Ukrainian military-industrial complex,' including drone factories, depots and missile launch sites, most such strikes have hit civilian areas. Among the facilities damaged was a US-owned electronics plant near Ukraine's border with Hungary. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Live Update: The Strategy Uses By Successful Intraday Trader TradeWise Learn More Undo Andy Hunder, president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine, said the Flex factory, one of the largest American investments in the country, was struck while 600 nightshift workers were present. Six were injured. 'The message is clear: Russia is not looking for peace. Russia is attacking American business in Ukraine, humiliating American business,' Hunder told the Associated Press. The attacks came as a US-led diplomatic effort is attempting to restart peace talks. Last week, US President Donald Trump met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, followed by talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders at the White House earlier this week. Since those meetings, Russia has launched nearly 1,000 long-range drones and missiles at Ukraine. Zelenskyy condemned the latest strikes, saying they were carried out 'as if nothing were changing at all.' He accused Moscow of showing no willingness for meaningful negotiations and urged the international community to increase pressure with stronger sanctions and tariffs. Ukraine has responded with long-range drone strikes inside Russia, targeting oil refineries and infrastructure that support Moscow's war effort. Russian wholesale gasoline prices have reached record highs in recent days. Meanwhile, Zelenskyy said Ukraine expects details of security guarantees from its allies within 10 days, after which he could be prepared to hold direct talks with Putin for the first time since the full-scale invasion in February 2022. A trilateral format alongside Trump is also under discussion, with Switzerland, Austria and Turkey considered as possible venues. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov dismissed negotiations without Moscow's direct involvement, calling them unfeasible. Zelenskyy, in his Oval Office meeting with Trump, sought to counter Putin's narrative of Ukraine's battlefield setbacks, pointing to errors in US maps that exaggerated Russian territorial control.

National Sports Governance Act: 'Would like BCCI to hold upcoming elections as per new act'
Logo of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) The Sports Ministry on Thursday expressed its preference for the upcoming BCCI elections, scheduled in September, to be conducted under the newly passed National Sports Governance Act. However, it clarified that if the detailed rules of the legislation are not notified in time, the cricketing body can go ahead with the polls under the Supreme Court-approved Lodha Committee recommendations. "Ideally the elections should be held as per the act but in case the rules are not notified in time, they may go ahead as per Lodha Committee recommendations," a ministry source told PTI. "Once the rules are notified, all NSFs, including the BCCI, will have to hold elections as per its norms." Poll Should BCCI elections be conducted under the new National Sports Governance Act? Yes, absolutely. No, follow the Lodha Committee recommendations. Only if the rules are notified in time. The ministry is aiming for the bill's complete implementation within six months but intends to notify its guidelines and regulations much earlier. The development assumes significance as the tenure of BCCI President Roger Binny has ended upon him turning 70. While the Lodha Committee recommendations cap the age of an office-bearer at 70, the new act permits those aged up to 75 to contest, provided their international federation allows it. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is this legal? "We have already told the Delhi High Court that we do not think that the procedure followed in the conduct of these elections is right. We will wait now and see what the court says," the source said. On a different note, the ministry lauded the passage of the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025, which bans real money gaming, terming it a major step to curb 'serious social, financial, psychological and public health harm.' The ministry also responded to a Parliamentary Committee report that flagged underfunding in SAI and inefficiencies in Khelo India.
