Brits throwing away £256 every year by staying loyal to banks

Daily Mirrora day ago
Sticking with current accounts that give nearly zero perks may be causing Brits to lose close to £256 a year — one bank is offering an alternative solution with a new launch.
Millions of Brits are sticking with current accounts that give them next to no perks — even when changing banks could put hundreds in their pocket.

A new study reveals 40% of people have never switched provider, despite 58% feeling let down when incentives are cut.

It comes in the same week that Santander shuts its 123 Lite account, moving clients to Everyday, which has fewer rewards. More than half (51%) of Santander customers surveyed were unaware that this was happening.

The research was carried out by Zopa Bank, who claim their newly launched Biscuit account offers four times the value of Everyday with customers able to earn £256 a year through cashback and interest.
To prove the point, Zopa sent a giant box of biscuits through London, encouraging people to check the value of their account. The oversized snack box contained 10,240 biscuits valued at £256 — the exact amount the bank says customers can earn in a year.
Merve Ferrero, Zopa's chief strategy officer, said: 'We know that over a third of UK consumers stick with their bank out of habit, even when their loyalty goes unrewarded.
'At Zopa, we want to change that. With Biscuit, we've launched the UK's best free current account for everyday value — combining the peace of mind of a fully regulated bank with the ease and value customers expect from a modern digital experience.
'Whether it's cashback on bills, interest on savings, or effortless money management in one place, Biscuit makes everyday banking better.'

The survey also reveals a clear generational divide in banking behaviour. While older customers are more likely to stay loyal even when perks disappear, 23% of Gen Z plan to shop around, compared with just 16% of 45–55-year-olds.
Gen Z are also turning to new sources for money advice with 42% consulting AI and social platforms like ChatGPT, TikTok, and Reddit, compared with 30% of millennials.
Unsurprisingly, spending priorities for a £256 windfall differ with millennials favouring football tickets (22%), Ninja gadgets (15%) or a Sky Sports /TNT subscription (11%). Gen Z's shopping list also includes football tickets (13%) alongside Oasis tickets (10%) and Dubai-style chocolate (10%).
Zopa, launched in 2020, has already attracted 1.5 million customers and won multiple banking awards. Its giant biscuit delivery, which trundled past landmarks including Pudding Lane and Tower Bridge, was taken to a foodbank.

However, according to aviation expert Sean, who is on social media platform X as SeanM1997, the London to Miami route will be cut from October. Taking around nine hours, the bargain flights cost as little as £275 return. It is the only airline route that connects London Gatwick to Miami. Brits will now have to head to London Heathrow instead to fly to the American city. It will also cost a lot more - the cheapest route we can find is around £405 return, with BA and Virgin offering alternative options. Other European routes have also been cancelled by Norse. These include: Berlin to New York Paris to Los Angles Paris to New York Oslo to New York Athens to Los Angeles There is some good news however, as the airline is launching more flight routes from the UK to Asia and Africa. Budget airline to launch brand new long-haul flights from the UK this year Last year, Norse launched flights from London Gatwick to Cape Town - and the Sun's Head of Travel (Digital) Caroline McGuire tried it out. And due to a boom in demand, they have even added more flights to the destination. Originally offering three flights a week, this has been increased to six flights, as well as running until May rather than April. They are also launching flights from London Gatwick to Bangkok later this year. Starting from October 26, there will be four flights a week for as little as £203 each way. The Sun's Assistant Travel Editor Sophie Swietochowski recently visited Bangkok - here is what she thought. And we spoke to a woman who left the UK to move to Cape Town.

The airline is set to recruit nearly 1,000 new cabin crew for 2026 as part of its annual recruitment drive, and is encouraging young adults and school leavers, many of whom will be looking for their next step after receiving their A-level results at the moment, to consider applying. Interest can be registered on the easyJet website now. Most Popular The Flight Paths initiative follows latest ONS figures*, which revealed that nearly one million young people in the UK are currently classed as NEETs, accounting for 12.5% of the UK's youth population – something cabin crew recruitment and sectoral growth could help bring down. Young people take part in easyJet's cabin crew taster session at the airline's London Gatwick Training Centre, led by current easyJet cabin crew and instructors. Indeed, a considerable 92% were unaware that there are no minimum educational qualifications required to apply for the job, with two in three (66%) young Brits believing they would be underqualified for cabin crew training. As a result, almost nine in ten (88%) 16-24 years olds have never considered a career working for an airline – even though over half (59%) say they'd be interested in a career in aviation. The research also reveals that 89% of young men believe there is still a misconception that cabin crew is typically a role for women. As a result, around a third (38%) British men say they previously wouldn't consider doing the job because of the traditional gender stereotypes around the role. The sessions will showcase how the job is a great opportunity to gain valuable life skills such as communication, team management, and problem-solving, while providing travel opportunities and career progression – with one in four (26%) 18-24s saying they would be interested in a job that includes travel abroad, and 28% keen for a career that would involve being part of a team. The Flight Paths initiative is the latest in easyJet's ongoing work to support early career and youth employment, including its Enterprise Advisors Programme - which sees easyJet employees from across the business including Engineering, IT, Data and Operations partnered with local schools in the Luton and Gatwick areas, where the airline has its largest UK operations, to provide careers advice and employability support to young people. Michael Brown, Director of Cabin Services at easyJet, said: 'We want to show young people that being cabin crew is more than just a job - it's a career filled with variety, teamwork and opportunity, which has so much to offer to so many people as well as offering a pathway to progress in working within our wider industry too. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'If you have enthusiasm, people skills and a willingness to learn something new, our taster sessions could be the perfect first step towards a new opportunity. We can't wait to welcome a new generation of cabin crew on board.' Aviation Minister Mike Kane, said: 'It's fantastic to see British firm easyJet investing in our young people, encouraging and inspiring them into careers in aviation. 'We are determined to break down barriers to opportunity in the UK to deliver our Plan for Change so everyone can pursue and progress in rewarding careers.' To offer further insight into their sky-high careers, easyJet cabin crew and recruitment experts have shared their personal experiences, including what inspired them to join the aviation industry, advice on the application process and CV tips, in a series of voice notes which can be listened to at SoundCloud. High street and supermarket giants including Tesco and Boots warning over price hikes ahead of tax raids

Plus, we share the retailers which have already said they would increase prices TAXING TIMES High street and supermarket giants including Tesco and Boots warning over price hikes ahead of tax raids Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) HIGH street and supermarket giants including Tesco and Boots have issued a warning over price hikes ahead of tax raids. Big wigs behind some of county's biggest chains have signed a letter to the Chancellor sent by trade body British Retail Consortium (BRC). Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Retail bosses have issued a warning over price hikes Credit: Reuters It warns that further tax rises on businesses could result in the Labour Government breaking its manifesto pledge to provide 'high living standards'. The letter, signed by more than 60 businesses, reads: "Labour's manifesto made a clear and welcome promise to deliver good jobs and higher living standards but if future policy decisions lead to rising prices and fewer jobs, then those commitments are at risk." "As retailers, we have done everything we can to shield our customers from the worst inflationary pressures but as they persist, it is becoming more and more challenging for us to absorb the cost pressures we face.' Many businesses have seen their labour costs rise thanks to the rate of employer national insurance being increased in last year's Budget. Employer National Insurance contributions were bumped up from 13.8% to 15% and the threshold at which they are paid lowered from £9,100 to £5,000 in April. Some retailers have blamed the tax hike for the decision to raise prices in shops, which they say has allowed them to partly mitigate the impact. Others have resorted to cutting staff or freezing hiring, while some businesses said they were absorbing the higher costs into their profits. The national minimum wage also increased in April to £12.21. Businesses say the overall jump in staff costs, coupled with new taxes on plastic packaging, have added £7billion in costs. The BRC also cited rising food and drink inflation, which hit 4.9% last month, with items like coffee, chocolate, meat and juice becoming more expensive. New 'property tax' will PUNISH hard-working Brits and torpedo house market, blasts Kirstie Allsopp The BRC is calling for a significant reduction in business rates on retail, hospitality and leisure firms, and assurances that no shops will pay more tax than they currently do. The Sun has contacted The Treasury for comment. Retailers warn of price hikes It comes after Iceland blamed Rachel Reeves' tax raid for hiking its suppliers' costs. In accounts published last month, the chain said it was "doing our utmost" to offset rising costs caused by suppliers, but would "inevitably have to pass some of these on to consumers, where we can do so without weakening our own price position in the marketplace". It added: "In consequence, we expect UK food price inflation to peak at some 4-5% in the next six months." Elsewhere, the boss of M&S said the supermarket would have to pass on extra costs due to the National Insurance and minimum wage hikes. Stuart Machin said any price rises would be 'small and behind the market' but did not say how much they would go up by. At the start of the year, Sainsbury's also warned the Budget would cost it an extra £140million. Its CEO Simon Roberts warned that the chain would need to work with its suppliers to minimise the impact on customers. More retail pain The warnings come amid a challenging time for retail with many chains battling low consumer spending alongside rising costs. River Island will close up to 33 stores in January as part of a restructuring plan to help write off the fashion brand's debts. Locations in major UK cities including Edinburgh, Leeds, Oxford, Brighton and Perth are all expected to close. Poundland is also waiting for high court approval for a dramatic restructuring plan which includes the closure of 68 stores. Elsewhere, New Look warned it would close nearly 100 stores ahead of National Insurance hikes which came into place in April. Approximately a quarter of the retailer's 364 stores are at risk when their leases expire. The chain has closed a number of this stores this year, including sites in London and Scotland. In February, New Look also exited the Republic of Ireland which resulted in the closure of 26 stores. At the time, the company said: "New Look's Irish operation has struggled for some years, impacted by a range of factors including supply-chain and in-market costs, and squeezed consumer spending".
