Hindi speakers' society of West Bengal to celebrate 100 years of Premchand's masterpiece Rangbhoomi in Kolkata

While it is common to celebrate the centenary of a personality or an event, it is not often that 100 years of the publication of a book is remembered through an event, something that a group of Hindi-speaking people in West Bengal is doing for Premchand's masterpiece Rangbhoomi.
At a time when it has become almost routine for language fanatics to make news, the Paschim Banga Hindi Bhashi Samaj (West Bengal Hindi Speakers' Society) is holding a seminar on July 31, 2025 to revisit the Hindi novel that was published a century ago. The event will be held at Premchand Library in north Kolkata.
Editorial | Premchand, who?
'The milestone is a memorable moment in Hindi literature, more so because the story is more relevant than ever. It is the story of a poor man being displaced from his land, something that is the reality of today's India. The problems depicted by Premchand in his literature have all acquired monstrous forms,' Ashok Singh, general secretary of the Society and former head of Hindi department at Surendranath Evening College, told The Hindu.
'In the words of critic Ram Vilas Sharma, Rangbhoomi represents the period that saw the beginning of the farmers' movement against landowners in the Hindi belt in the 1920s. They were fighting a lone battle without the help of any political party or leader. They lost because at the time farmers and labourers didn't have a union; that's what the protagonist, a blind beggar called Surdas, advises them while dying — he asked them to unite,' Mr. Singh said.

'Imagine, this was the 1920s, as if Premchand was looking at the future. He makes Surdas say, 'We may have lost, but we have not deserted the game, let us catch our breath and we will come back, we will learn from you with each defeat and will eventually defeat you someday.' Today, on one hand, the government is working in the interest of the corporates by displacing farmers from their lands, but on the other, an organised peasant movement has forced the government to withdraw three anti-farmer laws,' Mr. Singh said.
According to him, ever since the Paschim Banga Hindi Bhashi Samaj was set up, in 1999, its objective has been to hold literary and cultural events, and among the icons it has celebrated so far include Rahi Masoom Raza, Mrinal Sen and Ritwik Ghatak.

'The main objective of the language communalism you see in the country these days is to distract people from burning problems such as unemployment, inflation, poor education and privatisation of the health sector. In West Bengal, this sort of communalism was initiated by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during the 2019 elections when she said that the Hindi-speaking people in the State, who formed 15% of the population, were its guests,' Mr. Singh said.

Govt blocks 25 OTT platforms for streaming obscene, vulgar content

The government has ordered the blocking of 25 Over the Top (OTT) platforms for airing obscene content, the information and broadcasting (I&B) ministry said on Friday. The platforms including Ullu, Gulab, Hulchul, MoodX, and Mojflix, among others, have 'obscene, vulgar and in some cases pornographic content', the ministry said in a action to disable 26 websites and 14 apps have been taken in consultation with the ministries of home affairs, electronics and IT, and women and child development, and will be enforced through the Information Technology Act , 2000, and the IT Rules, 2021. The government finally cracked the whip on the 25 platforms after the I&B ministry had warned all of them back in September last year. Meanwhile, five platforms blocked earlier in March 2024, started publishing obscene content on new website domains, the ministry said."There was hardly any storyline, theme or message in a social context. A large portion of the content was obscene and vulgar," the statement on these platforms have fallen foul of multiple sections of IT Act, and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986."While these sections criminalise the publication and uploading of obscene content, the power to ban or order takedown of offending material online is governed by Section 69A of the IT Act read with Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking for Access of Information by Public) Rules, 2009," Vikram Jeet Singh, partner at law firm BTG Advaya, said. Singh pointed out this was important, since the government has in the past relied upon Section 79 of the IT Act while ordering content May, the web series 'House Arrest' had been taken down by Ullu after intervention by the I&B inmistry. Ullu had been censured earlier by the Digital Publisher Content Grievances Council, when over 100 web-series were asked to be removed. But after removing them, the OTT had re-uploaded the unedited versions, the ministry said.

ICW: 'Kaafi late nahi hogaya,' hilariously says Akshay Kumar as he closes Falguni Shane Peacocks show past his usual bedtime

New Delhi [India], July 26 (ANI): Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar is known for leading a disciplined lifestyle, which mainly includes hitting the bed early and waking up at 4 am in the morning. However, sometimes, due to work commitments, his "early sleep and wake-up routine" gets hampered. Friday night was one of those rare days when Khiladi Kumar stayed up late. He had no qualms about it as he was in his hometown, Delhi, for ace designers Falguni Shane Peacock's special show at India Couture Week 2025. After walking the ramp for the designers, Akshay briefly spoke with media around 11 pm on Friday night, joking about closing the show past his usual bedtime. "Well, thank you very much. Main Hindi mein bolunga. Aap sabhi logo ka bhaut bhaut dhanyawad, jitne bhi yahan log aaye, aur media. (Looking at his watch) Kaafi late nahi ho gaya hai?" Akshay quipped, leaving members of the media in splits. The 'Kesari' star was in full candid mode. When one of the shutterbugs said, "Dilli mein chalta hai sir", Akshay, with a touch of humour, responded, "Tabhi Haal dekh tera." Akshay returned to the runway after many years, but his comeback was definitely worth the wait. Dressed in an ivory bandhgala sherwani, Akshay looked handsome as he exuded desi swag with his showstopper look. His black sunglasses and silver juti elevated his traditional look, echoing with designers' offering Raj Mahal Bijoux - The Palace of Jewels. On making his comeback to runway after 12 years, Akshay expressed, "Actually, after a long time I'm doing this walk, ramp walk. Mujhe yaad hai, aaj se kariban 12 saal pehle, maine phir ek baar ramp walk kiya tha, maine inhi ke saath kiya tha. And it's been an honour doing that." Akshay also lauded designers, models and the entire team for their relentless efforts that go behind conducting one show. He added, "I have enjoyed each and every bit of it. Specially, maine dekha hai ki kitna hard-work jaata hai ek show karne ke liye, organise karne ke liye aur 25 minute ke andar poora ka poora khatam ho jaata hai. Log itna saj dhaj ke aate hain aur 25 minute ke andar poora show khatam ho jaata hai. But, I just want to tell you that Shane and Falguni, the way they present themselves in such an international way, I think they have made India so proud." Meanwhile, on the acting front, Akshay will be seen soon in Priyadarshan's film 'Bhooth Bangla'. He also has 'Haiwaan' and 'Hera Pheri 3' in pipeline with ace director Priyadarshan. (ANI)
