The crickets around any Karl-Anthony Towns-Knicks extension talks shouldn't be surprising
An All-NBA selection is up for an extension that nobody is talking about it. The lack of attention to Karl-Anthony Towns' situation is understandable after crunching the numbers, but I still find it noteworthy — and at least worthy of exploration — that the Knicks center has until Oct. 20 to add two years to his contract. After all, he just averaged 24.4 points and 12.8 rebounds while shooting 42 percent on 3-pointers. He and Nikola Jokic were the only players with those types of numbers last season. Offensively, it was the best campaign for a Knicks center since Patrick Ewing's prime. Adding two more years to Towns' deal would further align New York's starting lineup contractually. The Knicks just gave a near max extension to a zero-time All-Star in Mikal Bridges. Towns has a handful of All-Star selections, including a fifth last season. Yet, crickets.

Astros' Hader hopes to pitch in 2025, likely in postseason, after going on IL with shoulder issue
HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Astros All-Star closer Josh Hader said he hopes to pitch again in 2025, even if it means in the postseason, after being shut down because of a left shoulder issue. Hader will not throw for three weeks after being diagnosed with a left capsule shoulder strain on Friday. He will fill that time with rest and strengthening exercises and be re-evaluated to see if he can resume a throwing program. 'We'll see how my body recovers and how it's taking on rehab,' Hader said. 'Right now for me, I'm trying to get as strong as I can for these next three weeks and see where I go from there.' Hader said he would need a ramp-up period of about three weeks in order to pitch in games, which would likely rule him out the remainder of the regular. But, the six-time All-Star hopes to return in the postseason for the Astros, who entered Saturday leading the American League West by a half-game over Seattle. 'Obviously, I would love to be part of a playoff push, but realistically, I'm thinking about longevity,' Hader said. "If I can get these three weeks, get healthy and start moving into a direction where I can start throwing, yeah I would be definitely optimistic.' Hader was placed on the injured list for the first time in his nine-year career on Monday after he felt something in his shoulder he hadn't felt before while throwing in training. 'That's when I kind of threw up the caution signs and wanted to kind of look in deeper and kind of see what was really going on,' Hader said. ___

Washington basketball big man Hannes Steinbach named No. 3 international recruit
247Sports has updated its international basketball recruiting rankings to Washington's benefit. Big man Hannes Steinbach is now the third-highest composite-rated international recruit in the incoming class of 2025, behind guards Dame Sarr (Duke) and Neoklis Avdalas (Virginia Tech). Steinbach is now also the No. 68 recruit in the class, which boosts Washington's composite rank to No. 15 in the country. Steinbach has exploded onto the American basketball radar since debuting for Wurzburg in the Bundesliga in September 2024. He averaged 7.2 points and 5.8 rebounds in 31 regular season appearances, but stepped up when the lights got brighter. His averages jumped to 14.8 points and 10.4 rebounds per game in 10 postseason appearances. This summer, Steinbach also led Germany to a silver medal in the U19 World Championships, averaging 17.2 points and 14 rebounds a game and making the All-Tournament team. Steinbach and the Germans lost to now-fellow Husky JJ Mandaquit and the United States in the gold medal contest. Washington is now in the top 15 of both the composite prep and transfer ranks, according to 247Sports. Their prep class of Steinbach, Mandaquit, Jasir Rencher, Courtland Muldrew, and Mady Traore (from junior college) is No. 15. The transfer class of Desmond Claude and Wesley Yates III (USC), Christian Nitu (Florida State), Bryson Tucker (Indiana), Jacob Ognacevic (Lipscomb), Quimari Peterson (East Tennessee State), and Lathan Somerville (Rutgers) is ranked No. 13 in the country. Steinbach is expected to compete with Ognacevic, the reigning ASUN Player of the Year, for a starting job in the frontcourt this season. It's much more likely that the German will be a part of a potentially electric bench unit that could also include returning sophomore guard Zoom Diallo. Washington opens the basketball season with an exhibition against UNLV on October 19 before beginning the season in earnest with a showdown against Arkansas Pine Bluff on November 3.
