Market drifts lower amid tariff jitters, Q1 earnings season key to lift sentiment

Hans Indiaa day ago
Markets drifted lower during the week and lost over a per cent, primarily pressured by the lingering uncertainty surrounding global tariffs and a disappointing start to the earnings season, analysts said on Saturday.
While the tone remained largely stable in the first three sessions, profit booking in the final sessions dragged the indices lower. Eventually, both the Nifty and Sensex settled near their weekly lows at 25,149.85 and 82,500.47, respectively.
According to Ajit Mishra–SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd., sentiment weakened amid heightened global trade tensions following US President Donald Trump's renewed tariff threats on Canada and other key partners.
'Although there were expectations of an interim trade deal between the US and India, the lack of clarity kept risk appetite in check. Additionally, a weak start to the Q1 earnings season — especially after IT major TCS reported below-par results — added pressure to the markets in the final session,' he mentioned.
Consumption-oriented sectors such as FMCG and discretionary stocks experienced selective buying, supported by signs of urban demand revival and improving margins.
A backdrop of easing inflation, declining interest rates, and a favourable monsoon contributed to the overall positive undertone.
'Broader indices slipped into negative territory due to a lack of triggers to sustain current premium valuations and uninspiring results from a key IT bellwether, which raised concerns over FY26 earnings estimates,' said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited.
As Q1 FY26 earnings unfold, investors are closely monitoring guidance on margins and sector dynamics.
Looking ahead, the earnings season will be in full focus. A packed calendar includes results from HCL Tech, Tech Mahindra, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, Wipro, JSW Steel, L&T Finance, and HDFC Bank, among others.
On the macroeconomic front, participants will closely track the WPI and CPI inflation data scheduled for July 14 for further cues on the economy. Apart from these, the trend in FII flows and movement in crude oil prices will also remain on traders' radar, said market watchers.
Globally, markets will watch for any updates related to trade negotiations and tariffs, along with key economic data releases such as U.S. inflation and
'We anticipate a consolidation phase in the Nifty index with a negative bias in the near term, following the recent fall. Volatility is expected to persist amid global uncertainties and the unfolding earnings season. Traders are advised to maintain a stock-specific approach, focusing on companies with strong earnings and relative strength,' said Mishra.

Anil Ambani makes big move, Reliance Infrastructure to raise money by…, shares gain as much as...

New Delhi: Anil Ambani's company Reliance Infrastructure Limited has taken a big decision. The company is now preparing to raise money in different ways. This will strengthen the financial position of the company and give impetus to development plans. The company has informed that the Board of Directors will meet on July 16, 2025. The strategy for raising money will be discussed in this meeting. The company has recently repaid all its debt. What is the agenda of the meeting? The company says that the meeting will consider raising long-term resources by issuing equity shares / equity linked securities, through qualified institutional placement or any other method and/or through non-convertible debentures (NCDs). That is, the company can take money from investors in many ways. The company can issue equity shares and also issue equity-linked securities. Money can also be raised through qualified institutional placement (QIP). Apart from this, non-convertible debentures (NCDs) can also be issued. Why does the company need money? NCD is a type of loan, which cannot be converted into equity later. The company can do all this in one or more times. The board meeting will also consider whether to seek approval from shareholders or not. If there is a need to raise more money, a special meeting of shareholders can be called. Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP) means that the company will sell shares to big investors like banks and insurance companies. This shows that the company is confident about its growth. This news has come at a time when the company is going to release its first quarter results soon. This will let investors know how the company is performing and why it needs more money. The company's share price and investor response will depend on what the terms of raising money are. If the terms are good, investors will be more attracted. Improvement in rating Recently another good news came for the company as India Ratings and Research has raised the company's credit rating by three notches. Earlier the company's rating was 'IND D', which has now been changed to 'IND B/Stable/IND A4'. Credit rating shows how capable the company is in repaying the loan. Increasing the rating will make it easier for the company to take a loan. Reliance Infra shares have been performing well for the last one year. During this period, the share price has increased by 97%. So far this year, this stock has jumped by about 18%. This is much more than big indexes like Nifty and Sensex. Nifty and Sensex have increased by a little more than 3% this year. In the last five years, the company's stock has climbed more than 2000%. On June 27, it reached Rs 425, which is its 52-week high.

Gold, silver prices surge this week; silver crosses Rs 1.10 lakh per kg

New Delhi: Both gold and silver prices saw a sharp rise this week, with gold gaining over Rs 400 and silver surging by more than Rs 2,700 per kilogram. According to the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA), the price of 24-carat gold climbed to Rs 97,511 per 10 grams, up from Rs 97,021 a week ago -- a gain of Rs 490. In the previous week, gold had already seen an increase of Rs 1,237 per 10 grams. The price of 22-carat gold rose to Rs 89,320 per 10 grams, up from Rs 88,871. Meanwhile, 18-carat gold went up from Rs 72,766 to Rs 73,133 per 10 grams during the same period. Silver also saw a steep rise, gaining Rs 2,710 to reach Rs 1,10,290 per kilogram, up from Rs 1,07,580 last week. This marks the first time silver has closed above Rs 1.10 lakh per kg on a weekly basis, with prices hovering near record highs. The recent surge in precious metals is being attributed to global uncertainty. The announcement by US President Donald Trump regarding tariffs on key trade partners like Canada, Europe, and other countries has contributed to the rising tension in global markets. Gold and silver are traditionally seen as safe-haven assets during times of geopolitical and economic instability. When demand rises amid limited supply, prices tend to increase. Since January 1 this year, the price of 24-carat gold has jumped by Rs 21,349 or 28.03 per cent, rising from Rs 76,162 to Rs 97,511 per 10 grams. Similarly, silver has gone up by Rs 24,273 or 28.21 per cent, from Rs 86,017 to Rs 1,10,290 per kilogram. This is now the highest price silver has ever reached. The previous record was Rs 1,09,550 per kg, which was set on June 18 this year. The rise in both gold and silver is being seen as a response to growing global uncertainty.

Crypto firms push into US banking as President Trump signals friendlier stance

Firms including crypto payments group Ripple, stablecoin company Circle, and custodian BitGo have applied for national trust bank charters that would allow them to offer select banking services read more Cryptocurrency companies are accelerating efforts to enter traditional banking in the United States, capitalising on what they see as a more favourable regulatory climate under President Donald Trump and seeking deeper integration into the financial system. Firms including crypto payments group Ripple, stablecoin company Circle, and custodian BitGo have applied for national trust bank charters that would allow them to offer select banking services. Crypto exchange Kraken plans to launch bank cards by the end of the month. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'It's a natural convergence,' Arjun Sethi, Financial Times quoted co-chief executive of Kraken noting that the company plans to release debit and credit cards 'by roughly the end of the month'. The move signals a broadening of ambitions by crypto companies that have traditionally focused on digital asset services. Executives say confidence has grown under the Trump administration, which they view as open to digital assets, unlike former president Joe Biden, whose administration was perceived as hostile to the industry. New York-based Circle said securing a national bank trust charter from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), the federal banking regulator, would be 'a meaningful step' in bringing digital assets into the mainstream financial system. Anchorage Digital is currently the only crypto company holding a national bank charter. 'It's . . . a 180 from where a lot of these crypto companies started, saying 'we don't need banks, we don't need laws, we're above it all',' said Max Bonici, partner at law firm Davis Wright Tremaine. 'Now they're saying 'regulate us'.' National trust banks are authorised to hold assets and process payments but cannot make loans or accept direct customer deposits. The status allows firms to bypass the need for state-by-state licensing and provides improved access to the financial system. The expansion comes as Washington debates new stablecoin legislation, aimed at regulating the tokens more closely and tying them to traditional financial structures. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'It really does open up the US financial markets to basically allow for stablecoins,' said Adam Chernichaw, partner at Pillsbury. Stablecoins are digital assets pegged to national currencies like the dollar. They are used by traders to move between fiat and crypto markets, and increasingly for cross-border payments. The Trump administration and his cabinet have voiced strong support for stablecoins. The proposed Genius Act would impose tighter controls, linking stablecoins to US Treasuries and allowing only regulated banks and certain OCC-licensed entities to issue them. Brad Garlinghouse, chief executive of Ripple, said the company has also applied for a master account at the Federal Reserve, which would permit it to hold stablecoin reserves directly with the central bank. Digital banking and crypto are converging, with fintech companies seeking to harness the rapid growth of crypto assets to attract US customers. Retail brokerage Robinhood, which earned more than half of its transaction revenue from crypto last year, plans to introduce banking services this autumn. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'We should be able to help you with all of your financial needs,' said chief executive Vlad Tenev. 'So your taxes, your estate planning, you don't have to worry about moving money.' London-based neobank Revolut, which generates significant revenue from crypto trading, has long-term ambitions for a US banking licence. Klarna chief executive Sebastian Siemiatkowski also plans to transform the consumer lender into a crypto-focused company. Major banks such as Bank of America are also exploring stablecoin issuance, pending finalisation of US regulations. 'This administration has indicated that they'd be open to charter applications in a way that the prior administration was not,' said David Portilla, a partner at Davis Polk specialising in financial services. However, not all crypto firms expanding into traditional banking are seeking charters. Kraken, which holds a banking licence in Wyoming, is launching its new app without applying for a national trust or master account. 'We don't want to be the bank that offers a mortgage. We want to just partner with the best folks that can provide them,' said Sethi. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD
