Prince Harry retraces his mother's footsteps as he revisits Angola's minefields
The Duke of Sussex said 'children should never have to live in fear of playing outside or walking to school' as he visited Africa's largest minefield, continuing his mother's campaign against landmines.
Prince Harry, who is the patron of the anti-minefield HALO Trust, visited Cuito Cuanavale in Angola, where he witnessed the dangers still faced by local families.
He wore a protective vest as he walked through a cleared path in a minefield, echoing Diana, Princess of Wales' visit to the country in 1997.
The Prince also helped the landmine clearance charity set off controlled explosives at the site.
The HALO Trust said that at least 60,000 people have been killed or injured by landmines in Angola since 2008 – and more than 1,000 minefields remain to be cleared across Angola. Prince Harry with children in Cuando province. / Credit: HALO Trust
Harry met families who live in a remote village near Africa's largest minefield as part of the charity's community outreach programme, which aims to keep them safe from landmines until they're cleared by experts.
He said: 'Children should never have to live in fear of playing outside or walking to school. Here in Angola, over three decades later, the remnants of war still threaten lives every day.'
'The Angolan government's continued commitment is a powerful testament to HALO's success in saving lives and reducing humanitarian risk. We thank President Lourenço for his leadership and partnership, as well as continued donor support as we work together towards completing the mission of a landmine-free country.'
Harry also travelled to the country in 2019 and walked through a minefield to highlight the ongoing threat of the munitions.
During the visit, he retraced his mother's footsteps in Humabo, where she was famously photographed walking through a cleared path in a minefield.
The images of her in protective equipment gave the anti-landmine campaign global recognition.
Harry held a meeting with the President Lourenço in Luanda on Tuesday, where he welcomed 'the Angolan government's renewed commitment to supporting demining efforts across the country.'
The HALO Trust said they discussed a new three-year contract between the government and the charity.
CEO James Cowan said: 'We are hugely grateful to President Lourenço for his leadership and to the Duke of Sussex for his personal commitment to HALO's work in Angola.
'This new contract is an important step forward in our mission to make Angola mine-free, and we will continue our work in solidarity with the Angolan people until every last mine is cleared.'

Water park to reopen 'ahead of schedule' after £1.5m upgrade
A water park in North Lanarkshire is set to reopen after major £1.5m upgrade works were completed ahead of schedule. Time Capsule Water Park in Coatbridge will reopen on July 19, four months after it was closed for planned maintenance. The works included the installation of new pumps and blowers for the waterfalls and river rapids at the park. Upgrades were also made to the electrical systems at the park, with over a mile of new wiring and colour-changing underwater LED lights added. New soft rubber flooring has been installed at Splashdown Island and Coral Cove, while tiles and the river rapid slides have been repaired. Shower areas have also been updated to make 'everything more welcoming for visitors'. STV News However as further renovations at the water park are being planned, attractions such as the big tipping bucket and the yellow flume aren't open to the public yet. Duty manager Graeme Semple said the park was booked out for its reopening weekend. 'The Time Capsule facility is not only a local sports facility for the people of Coatbridge and the surrounding areas, it is a tourist attraction that people come from far and wide,' he told STV News. He added that visitors from as far north as Inverness and as far south as Wales have come to the water park for a day of fun. 'It's a place that people, if they come on holiday to Scotland, want to come and spend a good few hours, and we've welcomed visitors back time and time again,' he said. Councillor Geraldine Woods, convener of community services, said that the improvements make visiting the park 'more enjoyable'. 'Now that the first phase is nearly done, we are delighted to announce that we are once again taking bookings.' Visitors need to book in advance on the North Lanarkshire Council website. Scotland round off summer tour with seven-try win over Samoa
Scotland bounced back in emphatic fashion to round off their Pacific tour with a 41-12 victory over Samoa. Seven Scotland players notched tries at Eden Park in Auckland as Gregor Townsend's side finished their season on a high. The tourists were looking to make amends for a 29-14 defeat by Fiji last weekend which was littered with poor discipline and responded with a second win in New Zealand after beating the Maori All Blacks in the opening match. Ewan Ashman, Rory Hutchinson, Arron Reed, Kyle Steyn, Grant Gilchrist, Kyle Rowe and George Turner all crossed. Fergus Burke added two conversions – most of his attempts came from out wide – before George Horne kicked two points late on after Turner's try. Scotland were quickly into their stride and Ashman forced the ball over the line after an eighth-minute lineout maul to open the scoring. They kept up the pressure and Hutchinson doubled the lead five minutes later after latching on to a penetrating short kick from fellow midfielder Stafford McDowall. Samoa responded with some territory but Jamie Dobie put in a good saving tackle and Scotland largely kept their opponents at bay. Just like their second try, Scotland capitalised on a scrum deep in Samoan territory to extend their lead in the 31st minute. Dobie's long pass found Reed on the left wing and he made no mistake in the corner. The Scots produced an impressive switch of play to get their fourth try five minutes later. The ball was swiftly worked out to Steyn on the right wing after a lineout on the left-hand touchline to put the tourists 22-0 up at the interval. Rowe and the impressive Dobie came close to adding to the score in the opening moments of the second half before Gilchrist capitalised on some pressure near the try line to force himself over for his second Scotland try in the 45th minute. Horne's attempts to play out from deep backfired as he firstly put a team-mate in trouble and then lost possession as Benjamin Petaia Nee-Nee got Samoa off the mark in the 51st minute. But Scotland were soon back on the attack and Rowe crossed in the corner four minutes later after Burke offloaded on the ground. Duncan Paia'Aua grabbed Samoa's second try but Scotland had the final say as the power of their pack told and Turner touched down with two minutes left. Russian mother found living in remote Indian cave with her two daughters
A Russian woman and her two young daughters were found living in a cave deep in the forests of southern India, years after her travel documents expired, according to local authorities. Nina Kutina, 40, and her daughters, aged six and four, were discovered while inspectors were patrolling Ramatirtha Hill – a landslide-prone tourist site – on July 9. It is believed that they had been living in the cave for years, with Ms Kutina's visa having expired almost a decade ago. The mother claims that her family had lived in four countries before they went to India in 2017. She did not reveal whether her children were born in India or Russia, but she told authorities she had a son who died in Goa. Ms Kutina defended her decision to live off the grid with her daughters in an interview with India's ANI news agency, describing a life of swimming in waterfalls, painting and doing pottery. 'We have big experience to stay in nature, in jungle. We were not dying. I did not bring my daughters to die in jungle. 'They did not feel bad. They were very happy,' she said. 'Going (into) caves is a dangerous thing, and with two children, and to live there for a week or more is astonishing,' an officer added. Officials are taking steps to repatriate Ms Kutina and her children, who do not have passports. They have been moved to a nearby detention facility specifically for foreigners illegally in India.
