Cupido sets rallying cry as Sundowns face make-or-break Fluminese tie
Mamelodi Sundowns centre-back Keanu Cupido says the South African champions have no choice but to 'give it everything' against Fluminense on Tuesday if they are to extend their FIFA Club World Cup adventure.
The Brazilians sit third in Group F after a breathless 4-3 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in Cincinnati – a match Sundowns led early before being punished by individual errors and an own goal.
Fluminense's 4-2 win over Ulsan HD later the same evening means the Rio giants and Dortmund both have four points, with Sundowns on three.
Going into their final Group F game against the Brazilian side, the defender knows they must give it their all to be able to advance from the tricky group.
'Against Fluminense, we need to do well,' Cupido told reporters after the match.
'We have to give it our everything if we want to go through to the next stage.
'I feel like we will go home, back to the hotel, recover, rest, and then take it from there. But as a team, we want to win, we want to look for something positive out of the match.'
Miguel Cardoso's side had stunned Dortmund when Lucas Ribeiro slalomed from halfway to open the scoring on 11 minutes, but a stray pass by goalkeeper Ronwen Williams gifted Felix Nmecha parity and the Germans capitalised to lead 3-1 at half-time.
Even after Khuliso Mudau turned a cross into his own net for 4-1, Sundowns rallied: Iqraam Rayners poached his second goal of the tournament before substitute Lebo Mothiba set up a frantic finale with a 90th-minute strike.
Cardoso praised the 'bravery' of his players and claimed Dortmund 'will remember this match for a long time'.
Cupido echoed those sentiments but stressed that lessons – particularly in decision-making at the back – must be applied immediately.
Victory over Fluminense in Orlando will guarantee Sundowns a quarter-final berth regardless of Dortmund's result against win-less Ulsan.
A draw would leave the South Africans relying on the Koreans to shock the Bundesliga side – an outcome Cupido is unwilling to gamble on.
'We came here to test ourselves against the best,' he added.
'Dortmund showed us what happens when focus slips. Now it's about mentality: recover, reset and throw everything at Fluminese.'
Thousands of expatriate South Africans lit up TQL Stadium with vuvuzelas and will now travel to lend vocal backing in Orlando. Cupido believes that energy can tilt fine margins.

Ferrera begins Zamalek era with 2-0 win over Ceramica Cleopatra - Egyptian Football
Zamalek's newly appointed Belgian coach Yannick Ferrera kicked off his reign at the club with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Ceramica Cleopatra in the opening matchday of the Egyptian Premier League at Suez Canal Stadium on Friday. Forward Nasser Maher opened the scoring for the Cairo giants five minutes before the final whistle, while midfielder Mohamed Shehata sealed the win with a brilliant long-range goal in added time. The 44-year-old tactician fielded a lineup featuring the old guard, with only Angolan winger Chico Banza as the sole player from the newly reshuffled squad during the summer transfer window. The hosts controlled the rhythm of the game in the opening ten minutes but failed to create clear-cut scoring opportunities, with the only dangerous moment coming four minutes into the match. South African striker Fagrie Lakay received a precise cross from Islam Eissa on the right side of the box, but his right-footed shot hit the bar. Gradually, the White Knights began to dominate midfield, but their players struggled to move the ball into dangerous areas due to Ceramica Cleopatra's solid and well-organized defense. Five minutes before the half-hour mark, Zamalek midfielder Mohamed Shehata received a brilliant cross from veteran maestro Abdallah El-Said in the center of the box, only for Ceramica's newly signed midfielder Amr Al-Sulaya to block his left-footed shot, resulting in a corner kick. Both teams struggled to create scoring opportunities during the remaining minutes of the first half. Five minutes into added time, Zamalek winger Nasser Maher capitalized on El-Said's cross, unleashing a right-footed strike from outside the box, but his shot missed to the right. In the second half, Zamalek started on the offensive, controlling the tempo and possession, but their players again failed to create clear-cut scoring opportunities, with play confined to midfield. Six minutes after the hour mark, Ferrera injected new energy into his squad by introducing summer signings Palestinian forward Adam Kaied and Moroccan Abdelhamid Maali as replacements for Abdallah El-Said and Chico Banza, respectively, which proved fruitful. The breakthrough came six minutes before the final whistle when Nasser Maher converted a well-placed cross from Kaied into a right-footed shot that deflected off defender Ragab Nabil and into the goal. Ceramica pressed forward in search of an equalizer, but all their attempts were thwarted by Zamalek's solid defense. However, Shehata sealed the victory for Zamalek in added time as he intercepted the ball near the center of the field and sent a long-range shot from over 35 yards into the empty net, finding the top left corner. Up next, Zamalek will host Arab Contractors in the second matchday on Saturday, August 16, while Ceramica Cleopatra will face ZED FC two days earlier. Rana Atef Chelsea will play their first pre-season friendly match in preparation for the 2025–2026 season when they host German side Bayer Leverkusen this Friday evening at Stamford Bridge, with kickoff scheduled for 9:00 PM Cairo time. The match marks the first test for the London side under the leadership of new head coach Enzo Maresca, following their FIFA Club World Cup triumph last June. It is a highly anticipated occasion to get a glimpse of the team's form, especially after a busy summer transfer window. Several new signings are expected to feature against Leverkusen, including Jamie Gittens, Willian Estevão, and Dutch defender Jorrel Hato, who joined from Ajax in a £37 million deal.
