Cupido sets rallying cry as Sundowns face make-or-break Fluminese tie

Mamelodi Sundowns centre-back Keanu Cupido says the South African champions have no choice but to 'give it everything' against Fluminense on Tuesday if they are to extend their FIFA Club World Cup adventure.
The Brazilians sit third in Group F after a breathless 4-3 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in Cincinnati – a match Sundowns led early before being punished by individual errors and an own goal.
Fluminense's 4-2 win over Ulsan HD later the same evening means the Rio giants and Dortmund both have four points, with Sundowns on three.
Going into their final Group F game against the Brazilian side, the defender knows they must give it their all to be able to advance from the tricky group.
'Against Fluminense, we need to do well,' Cupido told reporters after the match.
'We have to give it our everything if we want to go through to the next stage.
'I feel like we will go home, back to the hotel, recover, rest, and then take it from there. But as a team, we want to win, we want to look for something positive out of the match.'
Miguel Cardoso's side had stunned Dortmund when Lucas Ribeiro slalomed from halfway to open the scoring on 11 minutes, but a stray pass by goalkeeper Ronwen Williams gifted Felix Nmecha parity and the Germans capitalised to lead 3-1 at half-time.
Even after Khuliso Mudau turned a cross into his own net for 4-1, Sundowns rallied: Iqraam Rayners poached his second goal of the tournament before substitute Lebo Mothiba set up a frantic finale with a 90th-minute strike.
Cardoso praised the 'bravery' of his players and claimed Dortmund 'will remember this match for a long time'.
Cupido echoed those sentiments but stressed that lessons – particularly in decision-making at the back – must be applied immediately.
Victory over Fluminense in Orlando will guarantee Sundowns a quarter-final berth regardless of Dortmund's result against win-less Ulsan.
A draw would leave the South Africans relying on the Koreans to shock the Bundesliga side – an outcome Cupido is unwilling to gamble on.
'We came here to test ourselves against the best,' he added.
'Dortmund showed us what happens when focus slips. Now it's about mentality: recover, reset and throw everything at Fluminese.'
Thousands of expatriate South Africans lit up TQL Stadium with vuvuzelas and will now travel to lend vocal backing in Orlando. Cupido believes that energy can tilt fine margins.

FC Porto fullback Moura expects tough test against African champions Ahly

FC Porto left back Francisco Moura expects a challenging encounter against Egyptian giants Ahly, describing them as "the best team in Africa" ahead of their decisive Group Stage clash at the FIFA Club World Cup. Porto and Ahly meet on Tuesday in a must-win match for both sides, who sit third and fourth respectively in Group B with one point each. Group leaders Palmeiras and Inter Miami are tied on four points, meaning qualification for the semi-finals remains mathematically possible for all four teams. 'We expect a very tough game against Ahly,' Moura told FC Porto's official website on Sunday. 'They are a strong side — the best in Africa — so we have to be fully focused.' The Portuguese side opened their campaign with a goalless draw against Palmeiras before suffering a 2-1 defeat to MLS club Inter Miami. 'We're not satisfied with the result against Inter Miami, but we have to put that behind us and concentrate fully on the match against Ahly,' Moura concluded. Cardoso: Sundowns 'earned world respect' in seven-goal epic

Published: Sunday, 22 June 2025 Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso says his side leave Cincinnati with their heads held high after pushing Borussia Dortmund to the brink in a 4-3 Club World Cup thriller he believes 'earned respect from the world'. The South African side stunned the Bundesliga giants when Lucas Ribeiro slalomed from halfway to score on 11 minutes, yet individual errors gifted Dortmund a foothold and the Germans surged 3-1 ahead by half-time. Even after Khuliso Mudau's own goal stretched the deficit to three, the South African champions refused to crumble: Iqraam Rayners pounced on a rebound before substitute Lebo Mothiba set up a frenetic finale with a 90th-minute tap-in. 'This was a hell of an experience for the players,' Cardoso told reporters after the match that kept fans on the edge of their seats. 'We grew a lot from this match. We can compete. We showed that we are on the pitch and we are not afraid. "We were brave enough and took them to the limit." Cardoso believes that late surge underlined his squad's character. "I already heard that Dortmund will remember this match for a long time and that is absolutely beautiful for me.' Defeat ends Sundowns' unbeaten start yet leaves Group F finely balanced after Fluminense 4-2 win over Ulsan HD in the group's other game. Victory over the Brazilian champions on Tuesday will still send Masandawana into the quarter-finals; any other result means relying on Dortmund to beat Ulsan. Cardoso knows defensive lapses – notably Ronwen Williams' stray pass for Felix Nmecha's equaliser – must be eradicated. South African fans inside TQL Stadium chanted long after the final whistle, acknowledging a performance that blended flair with resilience. Cardoso hopes that energy carries into the showdown with Fluminense.
