Huawei launches Pura 80 Ultra with unique switchable telephoto camera

Indian Express11-07-2025
Chinese phone maker Huawei has launched the Pura 80 Ultra, its newest flagship phone that takes smartphone photography to the next level. The company launches its devices in China only, but this time, Huawei is bringing the Pura 80 Ultra to the global market.
While this isn't the fastest smartphone on the market, Huawei says the Pura 80 Ultra is the first phone in the world to feature two switchable telephoto lenses stacked on top of one another. The device also stands out from the competition with its unique looking triangle-shaped camera island.
The huge camera island houses a 50MP 1-inch RYYB sensor, a 40MP ultrawide shooter and a 1.5MP spectral sensor that helps enhance the colour accuracy. However, the unique selling point of this device is the 50MP telephoto lens, which is the largest on any smartphone. This telephoto lens supports 3.7x optical zoom and also comes with a motorised periscope module that provides 9.7x optical zoom. This is a bit less than the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which came with a 10x periscope telephoto, but Samsung used a much smaller sensor compared to the one on the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra.
As is the case with recently launched Huawei phones, the company hasn't stated which chipset the Pura 80 Ultra comes with, but speculation has it that the phone is powered by its in-house developed Kirin 9020 chipset. The front of the phone sports a 6.8-inch LTPO OLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate and 3,000 nits of peak brightness.
The Chinese version of the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra comes with 5G and satellite connectivity and runs on HarmonyOS 5.1 out of the box, while the global variant will ship with 4G connectivity and run on Android-based EMUI 1.5. The phone also comes with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of internal storage.
Pura 80 Ultra also comes with a new AI Smart Controls button, which, as the name suggests, gives you quick access to frequently used shortcuts like AI lens, flashlight and camera, to name a few. What's interesting is that this button also doubles up as a fingerprint sensor, which is rare to see in a candybar flagship phone.
The global version of the Pura 80 Ultra will come with a 5,170mAh battery as opposed to the Chinese variant, which packs in a 5,700mAh battery. You also get support for 100W wired and 80W wireless charging. Available in two colourways – black and gold, the Pura 80 Ultra is available for purchase in China for 9,999 yuan, which roughly translates to Rs 1,19,500, but Huawei is yet to reveal the price of the global variant.

Tesla sales slump again in Europe despite revamped Model Y rollout

Registrations of new Tesla cars in several key European markets fell in July, despite a revamp to its signature Model Y, as the EV maker struggles with a backlash against CEO Elon Musk's political views, regulatory challenges and rising competition. Tesla's aging lineup is facing a wave of low-cost EV rivals, especially from China. It is rolling out a revamped Model Y and starting to produce a new, cheaper model, but production of that will only ramp up next quarter, later than initially expected. The brand's registrations - a proxy for sales - fell 86% year-on-year in July to 163 cars in Sweden, 52% to 336 cars in Denmark, 27% to 1,307 in France, 62% to 443 in the Netherlands and 58% to 460 in Belgium, official industry data showed, marking a seventh straight monthly drop in all of those countries. They also fell by 5% to 457 cars in Italy and 49% to 284 in Portugal. Tesla sales dropped by over a third in Europe in the first six months of the year. Norway and Spain bucked the trend, with Tesla's July registrations up 83% and 27% to 838 cars and 702 cars, respectively. Spain recorded a 155% jump in total sales of electrified cars - either battery electric or plug-in hybrid. Tesla's Chinese competitor BYD sold 2,158 cars in Spain in July, almost eight times more than in July 2024. With no more affordable-end vehicles on the horizon until the last three months of the year and the upcoming end of a $7,500 US tax break for EV buyers, Musk acknowledged in July that Tesla could have "a few rough quarters". He said tough automated driving regulations in Europe made it harder to sell the Model Y in some countries, as the vehicle's optional supervised self-driving is "a huge selling point". "Our sales in Europe, we think will improve significantly once we are able to give customers the same experience that they have in the US," he told analysts. Tesla began selling a long-range four-wheel version of the revamped Model Y in Europe in March 2025, while sales of the two rear-wheel drive variants began in May. Model Y registrations in Sweden and Denmark fell by 88% and 49% respectively in July, while they jumped more than fourfold to 715 cars in Norway. Norway, where almost all new cars sold are fully-electric and where Tesla has been the best-selling brand since 2021, has seen a surge in orders for the model since May after the automaker launched 0% interest loans in some Nordic countries to drum up demand. Tesla launched in June a trial robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, using about a dozen Model Y SUVs controlled by its autonomous-driving software. But the roll-out of its self-driving features elsewhere in the US is bogged down because it hasn't received the required permits. Overall car sales were up 20% in Denmark, 6% in Sweden, 48% in Norway, 17% in Spain, 9% in the Netherlands and 21% in Portugal, while they slid 8% in France, 5% in Italy and 2% in Belgium in July, industry data showed. Germany and the UK are expected to release July car sales next week. European automakers Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz , Stellantis, Renault and BMW have published downbeat second-quarter results, warning of pressure from US import tariffs and falling demand.

'Robots Replacing Students?': China's First AI Robot Joins PhD Programme

Human-level artificial intelligence (AI), popularly referred to as Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) may or may not be near, but China's humanoid robots are not leaving anything to chance. Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA) has accepted an AI robot named Xueba 01 into its four-year PhD programme in Drama and Film, making it the first time a humanoid machine has been granted full doctoral-candidate status. The robot named Xueba 01 has been developed by the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology in partnership with DroidUp Robotics, according to a report in South China Morning Post. STA accepted the robot's application last Sunday (Jul 27) during the World Artificial Intelligence Conference. Xueba 01 will be pursuing a four-year doctorate in Drama and Film, focusing on traditional Chinese opera. It has already been given a virtual student ID, and his mentor will be renowned Shanghai artist and professor Yang Qingqing. The humanoid robot, having the face of a handsome adult male, with detailed facial expressions, owing to its silicone skin, is expected to make an appearance on the campus on September 14. After reporting to the college authorities, Xueba 01 will attend classes, rehearse operas with other PhD students, and complete a final dissertation. It will also study artistic subjects like stage performance, scriptwriting, and set design, as well as technical topics such as motion control and language generation. Standing 1.75m tall and weighing about 30kg, Xueba 01 can physically interact with people, with its previous iteration winning third place in the world's first humanoid half-marathon. 'AI can't move people' As the news of an AI robot joining the PhD programme went viral, a section of social media users expressed scepticism at the development. "Now robots are replacing students," wrote one user, while another added: "Art needs life experience. A robot's algorithm-driven creations cannot truly move people."
