Rep. Don Beyer (D-Arlington) led the vigil and several other elected officials spoke, including U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and Alexandria Mayor Alyia Gaskins.
'Everyone around the world has not gotten to see what we in our community get to see every day,' Gaskins said. 'Which is [the first responders'] bravery, their strength, their resilience and their wisdom.'
Alexandria Fire Department Chaplain Capt. Nathan Krause led the group of candleholders in prayer.
'Lord, may we find solace from our fond memories of those we lost,' he said.

Richard Zhang, one of dozens of people in attendance, said he was thinking about 16-year-old Eddie Zhou, during the vigil.
Zhou, one of many ice skaters from the D.C. area who died in the crash, was a friend of Zhang's children. Zhou's parents were on the flight and died too.
'He was very active and talkative and always tried to be the leader in the group, too,' Zhang said.
He also called Zhou a 'star.'
'I feel very sad,' Zhang said. 'Life is precious and short.'

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Army's 250th birthday celebration is on Saturday, June 14. Here's what you need to know. The Army 250th birthday parade begins at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 14. Guest entry along the parade route is expected to begin at 2:00 p.m. Ahead of the parade are two events on the National Mall. The Army Fitness Competition and Awards Ceremony is from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The Army's birthday festival begins at 11:00 a.m., featuring live military demonstrations, military tanks and more. Following the parade, a concert will kick off at 7:30 p.m. followed by fireworks. The event coincides with the 79th birthday of President Donald Trump. Army officials estimate that around 200,000 people will attend the evening event. The event will feature: 6,000+ soldiers 150 military vehicles — including 70-ton Abrams tanks Black Hawk helicopters and more Flyovers A performance by the U.S. 'Golden Knights' Parachute Team In addition to the military vehicles, thousands of troops will march in formation, wearing uniforms representing every U.S. conflict dating back to the Revolutionary War. The Army birthday celebration had already been planned for months but earlier this spring, Trump announced his intention to transform the event into a massive military parade complete with 60-ton M1 Abrams battle tanks and Paladin self-propelled howitzers rolling through the city streets. Attendees are encouraged to register here. You're allowed to register up to 2 tickets per phone number. The tickets are first come, first served, per America 250. Thousands of Secret Service and FBI agents are being brought in from across the country, along with all of MPD and U.S. Park Police. There will be nearly 19 miles of barricades around the parade and festival, 175 magnetometers for public screening and drones overhead for aerial surveillance. "The mission is not just to secure an event, but to ensure public confidence in safety. We want every attendee to feel secure — that's why we are leaving no stone unturned," said Matt McCool, U.S. Secret Service. US Army to curtail VIP flights around Pentagon after fatal collision

By David Shepardson WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The U.S. Army will curtail VIP military helicopter flights around the Pentagon after safety concerns were raised following the January 29 fatal collision of a Black Hawk helicopter with an American Airlines passenger jet near Reagan airport, a senator said on Wednesday. Senator Jerry Moran, a Republican who chairs an aviation subcommittee, told reporters that the Army will limit training missions near Reagan Washington National Airport and limit the number of senior military and defense officials who can use helicopters for transport. The Federal Aviation Administration in early May barred the Army from training or priority transport flights around the Pentagon after a May 1 close call that forced two civilian planes to abort landings. The FAA is currently negotiating a memorandum with the Army to govern future military flights near commercial planes near Reagan, the FAA's acting administrator, Chris Rocheleau, told reporters. "We're working very closely with the Army," Rocheleau said. The FAA, the National Transportation Safety Board and the Army briefed senators on Wednesday on Washington airspace issues. Moran said that before January 29 the Army was ferrying three-star generals and above, but that now only the defense secretary and a limited number of other senior officials will be eligible when the Army resumes flights. "The number of flights, Army flights in that airspace, potential airspace has really been limited, and that's in my view a great development," Moran said. The Army's air "safety protocols are not as stringent as commercial aircraft," he added, saying he wants to see improvements. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy previously criticized the use of helicopters by generals for convenience. "Get a damn Suburban and drive - you don't need to take a helicopter," Duffy said. Another question is whether a key safety system known as ADS-B, or automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast, is working on most Army helicopters. Moran said testing shows the system is not working on other military aircraft and ADS-B was not in operation in the helicopter that crashed on January 29. ADS-B is an advanced surveillance technology that transmits an aircraft's location. Civilian aircraft must use it but the FAA in 2019 gave the military an exemption in rare circumstances. The FAA in March mandated its use on flights around Reagan.

Washington airport will halt flights at 6 p.m. Saturday night during Trump Army parade

(Fixes typographical error in headline) By David Shepardson WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The Federal Aviation Administration plans to suspend flights at Reagan Washington National Airport from 6 p.m. ET to 9:30 p.m. during U.S. President Donald Trump's Army anniversary parade on Saturday, the agency said Wednesday. The FAA is expanding the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Area Special Flight Rules Area and from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. will stop all arrivals and departures at the airport just outside Washington. Major airlines are offering flexibility to travelers. United Airlines said it is offering a travel waiver for Reagan National, as well as adding two additional departures from and two additional arrivals at nearby Washington Dulles International Airport on Saturday. American Airlines said it has "adjusted our schedule during this timeframe, temporarily added larger aircraft at DCA to accommodate more customers at alternative times and issued a travel alert that includes flexibility to travel on a different day or through Washington Dulles and Baltimore Washington at no extra cost." The long-planned celebration for the U.S. Army's 250th anniversary will coincide with the president's 79th birthday. The airport is located less than two miles from the National Mall. The U.S. Army is bringing 6,500 troops into Washington, along with 150 vehicles and 50 aircraft for the celebration. The flyover will include Apache and Black Hawk helicopters along with Chinooks. Older aircraft like the World War Two-era B-25 bomber and P-51 Mustang will also take part. The Washington area is the most heavily restricted airspace in the United States. No drones are permitted in Washington without special FAA approval. The FAA has barred routine Army training and transport helicopter flights around the Pentagon after a May 1 close call and the Jan. 29 collision of an American regional jet and Army helicopter that killed 67.
