Several residents displaced after Alexandria apartment fire
ALEXANDRIA, Va. () — Several people are without a home after a fire tore through an Alexandria apartment Friday night. Alexandria Fire Department's Engine and Truck 208 arrived first at the scene, in the 5400 block of Sheffield Court, fire officials said. There, they found heavy flames coming from a top-floor apartment. Crews quickly began working to extinguish the blaze, which had spread to the attic. Due to the two-alarm fire, the Alexandria Police Department that Sanger Avenue between N Van Dorn and N Beauregard streets was temporarily closed. However, in a news release, the Red Cross said it is providing support for 25 residents from 10 apartments who were displaced by the fire. 'Trained Red Cross disaster response volunteers are supporting displaced residents with financial assistance, emotional and mental health support, help replacing medications, eyeglasses and other essential items lost in the fire and other recovery resources, according to need,' the Red Cross said, in the release. The relief agency added that five Red Cross disaster response team members were at the scene of the fire from around midnight until about 4:30 a.m., helping residents. Alexandria Fire Department warns against outdoor burning during dry conditions
CALHOUN COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — Five homes have been lost due to burn piles throughout the past week in Calhoun County, according to the Alexandria Fire Department. The department says that several other burn piles have gotten dangerously close to structures in the area. Alabama Forestry Commission wildfire advisory remains in effect throughout weekend 'All of Calhoun County is under a Red Flag Warning and some cities have burn bans in place,' they said in a Facebook post. 'With the dry conditions and wind if your fire gets away from you, you will not be able to stop it.' The Alabama Forestry Commision suspended the issuance of all burn permits throughout the weekend, saying that they will re-evaluate the weather situation on Monday. Vigil held in Alexandria for 67 victims of DCA plane crash
ALEXANDRIA, Va. () — On Wednesday night in Alexandria, the victims of last week's between an American Airlines plane and a military helicopter were remembered at a vigil.
