Cairo Hosts 2nd Green Growth Summit under the theme 'Unlocking Solutions and Innovative Finance' - Sponsored

Al-Ahram Weekly17-06-2025
Following the success of its inaugural edition, Hivos is convening the Green Growth Summit for the second consecutive year in June 2025.
The Summit will once again serve as a high-level, platform to unlock solutions and innovative finance for a green and inclusive future in Egypt and the wider MENA region. With climate risks escalating and youth unemployment persisting, the MENA region stands at a critical juncture.
Yet the emergence of green startups, scalable SMEs, and blended finance tools offers a promising path forward. From sustainable agriculture to clean energy, the green economy is becoming a cornerstone of future-ready job creation.
The Green Growth Summit 2025 seeks to harness this momentum and scale up the innovations needed to turn potential into progress. This year, the event is supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands through the Challenge Fund for Youth Employment (CFYE) and is organized in partnership with Stichting SPARK as part of the EU-funded Green Forward programme, and with Finance in Motion, advisor to the Green for Growth Fund (GGF).
In 2024, the Green Growth Summit made a strong impact by connecting entrepreneurs, investors, and policymakers to catalyze strategic collaborations. This year, the Green Growth Summit aims to continue translating this momentum into measurable action by mobilizing capital and building partnerships to accelerate Egypt's green economy.
'The Green Growth Summit is more than a convening. It's a commitment to build a fairer, greener economy. By translating insights into investment and partnerships, we are shaping a just green transition grounded in inclusion and innovation,' said Ahmed Ben Nejma, Challenge Fund for a Just Transition Project Manager at Hivos.
The 2025 Summit will be structured around four core tracks, with a strong emphasis on youth inclusion, gender equity, and measurable impact:
Green Investment Management: Unlocking investment pipelines for green SMEs, such as through ESG frameworks and risk-return models.
Blended Finance Innovation: Examining de-risking instruments, tools and models to channel more funding to climate solutions.
Future-Proof Employment & Green Value Chains: Catalyzing decent green jobs through sustainable production, value-chain support, and cluster development.
Sector Spotlights – AgriTech, Health Care & AI: Highlighting opportunities at the intersection of digital and green innovation to shape Egypt's sustainable economy.
The summit will bring together a curated group of changemakers and institutions leading Egypt's green transition, including green startups, scaleups, and SMEs; innovation accelerators and incubators; local and international investors, development finance institutions (DFIs), and venture capital funds (VCs); donors and development partners focused on economic inclusion; as well as policymakers and experts shaping the country's green strategy.
'This Summit is about creating momentum that lasts beyond the event itself. It's where ideas evolve into initiatives, and partnerships become pathways to real, inclusive growth. We're empowering the ecosystem that green entrepreneurs and youth need to thrive,' added Ben Nejma.
The Green Growth Summit is set to be a landmark event on Egypt's sustainability calendar, bridging vision with action to accelerate a just, inclusive, and climate-resilient economy.

The Ministry of Economy and Tourism announced that it will host the UAE Africa Tourism Investment Summit on October 27, 2025, in Dubai, as part of the Future Hospitality Summit FHS World 2025 – one of the leading global platforms for the hospitality, tourism, and investment sectors. The Summit aims to enhance economic and tourism partnerships between the UAE and African nations, boosting mutual investments across key priority sectors, particularly tourism, hospitality, and related services. As part of the initiative, the Ministry of Economy and Tourism signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The Bench – the organizers of FHS World – in the presence of H.E. Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Tourism. The MoU was signed by H.E. Badreya Al Maidoor, Assistant Undersecretary for the Support Services Sector at the Ministry, and Daria Smith, Portfolio Director at The Bench. The two parties will collaborate on organizing the event and coordinating its promotional efforts, in line with the Summit's objective of highlighting investment opportunities in tourism-related activities and projects across the African continent. The event will bring together over 250 high-level participants, including senior government officials, decision-makers, and investors from 53 African countries, including tourism ministers and representatives of investment promotion agencies from across the continent. This reinforces the UAE's role as a reliable investment partner for Africa and opens new avenues for strategic collaboration in vital sectors that contribute to building a more integrated and sustainable economic future. H.E. Badreya Al Maidoor said: 'The UAE Africa Tourism Investment Summit will serve as a strategic platform for exchanging insights and expertise between the UAE and African nations, supporting sustainable development efforts through the establishment of projects and partnerships that serve mutual interests. This aligns with the objectives of 'We the UAE 2031' vision, which aims to position the country as a leading global hub for the new economy, driven by international partnerships and future-focused sectors.' Jonathan Worsley, Chairman & CEO of The Bench said: 'We are honoured to partner with the UAE Ministry of Economy & Tourism to launch the UAE Africa Tourism Investment Summit as part of FHS World 2025. This collaboration reflects our shared ambition to accelerate investment and development across Africa's hospitality sector. The UAE has long served as a bridge between global capital and emerging markets, and this new platform will strengthen the connections between African nations and the international investment community. Together, we are creating an ecosystem that fosters meaningful dialogue, unlocks deal flow, and drives long-term economic growth across the continent.' The Summit will enable participants to explore opportunities for collaboration between government entities and the private sector across the tourism, investment, infrastructure, and hospitality sectors in both the UAE and the African continent. It also seeks to highlight future initiatives within the tourism and hospitality sectors in both markets.

FM looking forward to holding first Egypt-EU summit this year

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty expressed his anticipation for holding the first Egypt-European Union Summit this year, highlighting the positive momentum in ties between the two sides. Abdelatty made the remarks during a phone call on Friday 15/8/2025 with EU Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Šuica, as part of ongoing joint efforts to support and coordinate Egypt-EU ties and regional developments. The minister stressed Egypt's commitment to further strengthening the strategic and comprehensive partnership with the EU, particularly through the implementation of its six main pillars. He also underlined the importance of activating the outcomes of the Egypt-EU Investment Conference held in June 2024, lauding the rapid progress in bilateral ties and continued cooperation in the political, economic, and trade sectors. The talks also took up the latest developments related to the Palestinian cause. Abdelatty briefed the commissioner on the situation in the Gaza Strip, strongly rejecting Israel's settlement activities, which he described as a blatant violation of international law that escalate regional tensions and contribute to the spread of extremism. He urged the EU to intensify its efforts to secure an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and ensure the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian, medical, and relief aid, amid Israeli-imposed restrictions. Abdelatty condemned Israel's use of starvation as a weapon against innocent civilians. In response, the commissioner expressed the EU's appreciation for Egypt's genuine efforts to help broker a ceasefire and enable humanitarian aid, affirming the EU's intention to participate in the reconstruction conference and work closely with Egypt to ensure unhindered aid delivery. She also underlined Egypt's role as a key pillar of stability in the Middle East.

The EU nearly triples entry fee for visitors, before it even starts

The must-have travel accessory du jour is a big fat wallet. You likely have heard about the United States introducing a new $250 'visa integrity fee' for international visitors. The European Union has also been busy on the travel fee front, recently raising its upcoming European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) fee from 7 to 20 euros (about $23). The fee will apply to non-EU nationals from visa-free countries — so that means the US, the UK, Canada, Japan and more — and the plan is for it to be up and running by late 2026. The European Commission attributes this hefty increase to rising inflation, additional operational costs — and also to bringing it in line with other travel authorization programs, such as ESTAs in the US (with a price tag of $21) and ETAs in the UK. The UK hiked up the cost of its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) in April, going from £10 to £16 (also around $21). Living the dream Making a permanent move to another country proved just the change these Americans needed. Retired US veteran Christopher Boris was struggling to cope with the rising cost of living, so in 2024 he and his wife Maria Jesus moved from Maryland to Brazil. 'I could not afford the American Dream,' Boris tells CNN. 'But here, it's not about making money. It's establishing other factors, like friendships.' Janet Blaser, originally from New York, relocated from California to Mexico nearly two decades ago. As a single mother of three 'living paycheck to paycheck,' she says she always felt like she 'didn't have enough.' She started a magazine business and got herself a permanent resident visa. 'I feel like I succeeded here,' she tells CNN. 'I've given myself a wonderful life.' Nashville woman Linda Leaming was blown away by the beauty of the Kingdom of Bhutan when she visited in 1994. 'I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life here,' she tells CNN. Three years later, she made the move, and has since found love and happiness in the Himalayas. 'Moving to Bhutan taught me to live mindfully,' she says. Aviation history The de Havilland DH106 1A Comet was the world's first passenger jet. It was the height of 1950s luxury — but it was also a death trap with a fatal design flaw. Now it's been brought back to life. Read its incredible story here. Not long before the Comet took to the skies, a 20-minute flight between Hong Kong and Macao became a record-breaker in a different way. The world's first airplane hijacking took place on the Miss Macao seaplane in 1948. The goal? Rob the passengers and then hold them for ransom. Finally, aviation fans passing through Budapest would do well to squeeze in a visit to Budaörs, a beautiful but forgotten Bauhaus airport that's an aviation time capsule. It's been operating continuously since 1937, with its grassy airfield now used by hobby pilots, private planes and helicopters. Escalator etiquette China is telling its 1.4 billion people to abandon the nearly universal practice of 'stand right, walk left' on escalators. Instead, authorities are offering what they say is a safer and better alternative. Might the experiment catch on elsewhere? Watch the video and see what you think.
