Will move Supreme Court to get Rs 2K crore Samagra Shiksha fund from union govt: CM Stalin
CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin announced that the state will move the Supreme Court against the centre for withholding funds of Rs 2,152 crore meant for Tamil Nadu for the year 2024-25 under the Samagra Shiksha scheme.
He expressed hope for a favourable verdict, similar to the one secured last month in Tamil Nadu's case against the governor. He also vowed to intensify the fight to restore education to the State List in the Constitution.
Speaking at the launch of the book 'National Education Policy–2020: The Rogue Elephant' (Matha Yaanai), authored by School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, at the Anna Centenary Library in Chennai on Saturday, the CM accused the union government of withholding educational funds for 'petty political' reasons.
The parliamentary committee on education, chaired by Congress leader and MP Digvijaya Singh, who also took part in the event, had objected to the withholding of funds and recommended the union government to release them immediately, the CM, who released the book, pointed out.
The union government had said that the funds will be released only if the Tamil Nadu government signs a Memorandum of Understanding to implement another centrally-sponsored PM SHRI scheme to develop model schools, which mandated the implementation of National Education Policy (NEP), including the three-language formula. TN has refused to sign, stating that it would not be implementing the NEP, especially the three-language formula.

Karnataka Law Minister HK Patil has written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah urging him to punish those guilty of illegal mining in the state, alleging that the government has not been honest and committed to ensuring proper punishment for those guilty of "looting the state's wealth".In order to bring the culprits behind illegal mining to justice, Patil also suggested steps that the Siddaramaiah government should take, according to a seven-page letter to the Chief Minister, Patil claimed that only 7.6 per cent of all illegal mining cases have been investigated and that the government has not done enough to punish the culprits and recover the lost wealth. "Between 2007 and 2011, massive treachery took place in Karnataka in the form of illegal mining. Politicians and bureaucrats systematically looted the state's wealth. The government lost Rs 1.5 lakh crore. But in spite of such a large-scale loot, the government has not demonstrated honesty and commitment in ensuring commensurate punishment for the loot and recovery of the state's wealth," Patil said in the said that there is public outrage over illegal mining in the state and the administration's inability to address most of such cases."There is outrage among people about this. A special investigation team (SIT), which is looking into a few cases, has not made progress. These cases are getting buried in government files and administrative delays," he also suggested steps that can be taken to effectively address illegal mining and their investigation:Through the Criminal Law Amendment Ordinance of 1946, a Recovery Commissioner should be immediately appointed within the jurisdiction of the State Government to seize the property of criminals accused of recovery efforts. This Commissioner must be provided with the necessary support and strength. Steps must be taken with firm determination to make recovery to the number of illegal mining cases that have completed investigation and are now in the trial phase in court, there are at least ten times more cases that have not yet undergone investigation. Investigations into such cases are essential. Rajkot Fort in Maharashtra shut again 41 days after Shivaji statue inauguration, ground cave-in sparks safety fears
Barely 41 days after the inauguration of a newly rebuilt 91-foot statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the refurbished Rajkot Fort in Malvan, Sindhudurg district, has once again been shut to the public for urgent repairs. The closure was prompted by a partial cave-in near the statue's platform last week, raising concerns about the structural integrity and safety of the site. The Public Works Department (PWD) has issued a notice stating that the fort will be closed to tourists starting Sunday, with repair work expected to continue for several days. The damage was visible last week after heavy rains when a large crater emerged on the left side of the pathway around the statue. While the statue itself remains intact, viral videos showing the sunken ground have sparked widespread public criticism. Anil Patil, Collector, Sindhudurg, had attributed the incident to recent heavy rains. Although authorities initially claimed that the issue had been rectified, the decision was later made to suspend public access to carry out comprehensive repairs. The 91-foot bronze statue, depicting the sword-bearing Maratha warrior, was inaugurated on May 11, just eight months after the earlier 35-foot version collapsed in August 2024 amid heavy rainfall and strong winds. That statue was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December 2023. The incident led to the arrests of both the statue's sculptor and its structural consultant amid a political firestorm, prompting the government to build a new structure. Constructed at a cost of Rs 31.75 crore, the new statue was unveiled by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. However, this second structural failure has revived criticism from Opposition leaders, including former Shiv Sena UBT Kudal MLA Vaibhav Naik. 'The state has so far spent over Rs 100 crore on this project, yet the ground around the statue has caved in. This raises serious questions about the quality of construction. Forts built during Shivaji Maharaj's reign have stood strong for centuries, yet structures built today with a supposed 100-year guarantee are failing. A thorough investigation must be conducted.' Israel-Iran conflict: Tehran hangs Majid Mosayebi, alleged Mossad agent, third execution since April
Iranian authorities executed on Sunday a man convicted of being an agent for Israel's Mossad spy service, the judiciary said, as fighting raged between the two foes for the tenth day. According to an AFP report, judiciary's Mizan Online website said, 'Majid Mosayebi... was hanged this morning after going through the full process of criminal procedure and after his sentence was confirmed by the Supreme Court,' adding that Mosayebi sought to provide 'sensitive information ... to Mossad'. Iranian authorities have carried out multiple arrests of people suspected of spying for Israel since its attack on June 13, the report added. Mizan did not mention when Moseybi was arrested. According to the report, Iran had executed a man convicted of spying for Israeli intelligence agency Mossad, the judiciary said on May 28. "After identification, arrest, and judicial proceedings against Pedram Madani, who was spying in favour of the Zionist regime, and following the complete process of criminal procedure and the final confirmation and upholding of the verdict by the Supreme Court, he was brought to justice and executed," Mizan Online reported. According to the report, Madani was accused of transmitting classified information and holding meetings with Mossad officers abroad, including in Brussels. The judiciary said he had travelled to "the occupied territories" – the term used by Iranian officials to describe Israel – prior to his arrest in 2020-2021. He was also convicted of acquiring "illicit wealth" by receiving euros and bitcoin from Israel, the report added. Mizan added that Madani was ultimately found guilty of "espionage on behalf of the Zionist regime's intelligence service (Mossad)" under charges of waging war against God and "corruption on earth", and sentenced to death. The report did not detail Madani's age, profession or how he obtained the classified information. His case follows a string of similar executions in Iran targeting individuals accused of collaborating with Israel. In April, Iran executed Mohsen Langarneshin for allegedly aiding Mossad in the 2022 assassination of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Colonel Hassan Sayyad Khodaei in Tehran. Authorities said Langarneshin provided technical support to Mossad and met with Israeli agents overseas. According to an AP report, the US military struck three sites in Iran early Sunday, inserting itself into Israel's effort to decapitating Iran's nuclear program in a risky gambit to weaken a longtime foe amid Tehran's threat of reprisals that could spark a wider regional conflict.
