‘Forthcoming mass extinction will be the first one engineered by humans'
Chennai: If one were to write the history of humankind from a climatic perspective, it would have a pre-2024 era and a post-2024 era. A rapid increase in carbon levels in the atmosphere posed serious threats to the environment, calling for immediate redress, Poovulagin Nanbargal coordinator G Sundarrajan said here on Saturday. In the last 10,000 years, the current juncture of existence was the most crucial as humankind faced five risks simultaneously for the first time — climate change, mass extinction, spread of diseases/infections such as Covid-19, pollution, and inequality. "There have been mass extinctions before as well. But the forthcoming mass extinction [of a species] will be the first one to be engineered by humans," Sundarrajan said at an editors' meet on climate change, organised at Anna Centenary Library. He stressed the need for holistic coverage of climate change by the media and offered suggestions to spread awareness among the public. He called for setting up a "climate desk" in all media organisations to come out with news stories pertaining to climate change. "All forms of news must be approached from a climate change angle, and news about the marginalized, who are most affected by global warming, must be given more coverage," it said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Forget Furosemide, Use This Household Item To Help Drain Edema Fluid WellnessGuide Learn more Undo Projects and technologies proposed as solutions to climate change must be critically examined for their authenticity. Melting of glaciers, rise in global average temperature in a short time, and gender and caste aspects of climate change were discussed at the meeting. The event was held in coordination with the Chennai Press Club. Poovulagin Nanbargal presented one copy of each of its published books to the club's president, Suresh Vedanayagam.

Will move Supreme Court to get Rs 2K crore Samagra Shiksha fund from union govt: CM Stalin
CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin announced that the state will move the Supreme Court against the centre for withholding funds of Rs 2,152 crore meant for Tamil Nadu for the year 2024-25 under the Samagra Shiksha scheme. He expressed hope for a favourable verdict, similar to the one secured last month in Tamil Nadu's case against the governor. He also vowed to intensify the fight to restore education to the State List in the Constitution. Speaking at the launch of the book 'National Education Policy–2020: The Rogue Elephant' (Matha Yaanai), authored by School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, at the Anna Centenary Library in Chennai on Saturday, the CM accused the union government of withholding educational funds for 'petty political' reasons. The parliamentary committee on education, chaired by Congress leader and MP Digvijaya Singh, who also took part in the event, had objected to the withholding of funds and recommended the union government to release them immediately, the CM, who released the book, pointed out. The union government had said that the funds will be released only if the Tamil Nadu government signs a Memorandum of Understanding to implement another centrally-sponsored PM SHRI scheme to develop model schools, which mandated the implementation of National Education Policy (NEP), including the three-language formula. TN has refused to sign, stating that it would not be implementing the NEP, especially the three-language formula.

Vidiyal Payanam: Stalin gets first-hand feedback
CHENNAI: The CM on Wednesday flagged off 214 new buses for six transportation corporations at Island Ground in Chennai. He also interacted with woman commuters aboard a government bus operating under the Vidiyal Payanam scheme — which provides free bus rides for women — in the city, as the DMK government completes four years after assuming office in May 2021. An official stated that while travelling from the Secretariat to the Anna Centenary Library, the CM boarded route number 32B — running from Vallalalar Nagar to Vivekananda Illam — at the Omandurar Government Estate bus stop. During the journey, he spoke with woman commuters and enquired about the scheme's impact as it enters its fifth year since implementation. The woman commuters shared that the initiative has helped them save around Rs 2,000 per month, which they now use for essential expenses like healthcare, education and others. The CM also directed the bus crew to ensure that buses halt at designated stops so women can fully benefit from the scheme. Out of a total of 214 new buses, 27 were allocated to SETC, 114 to Villupuram TNSTC, 10 to Salem, 31 to Coimbatore, 14 to Madurai and 18 to the Tirunelveli division.
