Aaron Ramsey swaps Cardiff manager job for unexpected new playing role
Aaron Ramsey had been the bookmakers' favourite to become the next permanent Cardiff City manager, but instead he will continue his playing career a long way from Wales. The 34-year-old returned to Cardiff for a third stint in 2023, signing a two-year deal after a brief spell with French club Nice. The Bluebirds struggled in the Championship last season and after manager Omer Riza was dismissed in April, Ramsey was appointed interim manager for the final three games of the season. He could do nothing to stop Cardiff slipping into League One, finishing bottom of the Championship as they won just nine of their 46 league games. Despite this, Ramsey was being strongly linked with taking the job on a permanent basis, with the bookmakers considering him favourite for the role. There has been a surprising turn of events, though, as Ramsey will not only turn away from the chance to manage Cardiff, but he will extend his playing career in Mexico. PA report that the former Arsenal and Juventus midfielder has agreed to sign for Pumas, officially known as Club Universidad Nacional. Ramsey and Pumas manager Efrain Juarez share the same agent. The 86-cap Wales international made just eight Championship appearances for Cardiff last season and 10 in all competitions. Hamstring injuries hampered his campaign significantly after a knee problem had limited him to just 13 appearances in the previous campaign. Injuries have been an issue for the Welshman over his career, but will hope to stay fit and enjoy a surprise swansong in Mexico City. Ramsey will be the only British player in the Pumas squad and only the second European after Spaniard Ruben Duarte. Ramsey began his professional career with Cardiff when he became the club's youngest ever player by making his debut in 2007. He signed for Arsenal the following year and went on to make 369 appearances for the Gunners, scoring 64 goals and winning three FA Cups. More Trending The midfielder moved to Juventus on a free transfer in 2019, earning reported £400,000-a-week wages and he won Serie A in his first season with the Old Lady. Arsenal FA Cup: 2013-14, 2014-15, 2016-17 Juventus Serie A: 2019-20 Coppa Italia: 2020-21 Rangers Scottish Cup: 2021-22 However, he would only make 70 appearances for the Turin giants before leaving for Nice in 2022 after a loan spell with Rangers. His return to Cardiff in 2023 was his third spell with the Bluebirds as he also had a loan stint back in Wales during his Arsenal days. Ramsey's three games in interim charge returned two draws and a loss, with Cardiff finishing rock bottom of the Championship.

Plymouth Argyle striker Ryan Hardie should be given a chance to play for Scotland, according to one of his teammates, after hitting double figures for the second season in a row in the English Championship. Hardie, 28, netted ten times for the Pilgrims this season, although it was not enough to stop them being relegated to the third tier of English football. The former Rangers youngster scored 12 goals the season before and Victor Palsson, one of his clubmates at Home Park, is surprised Hardie has not been given the call. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Ryan Hardie scored ten goals in the Championship for Plymouth Argyle last season. | Getty Images Capped at under-21 level, Hardie spent five years at Ibrox, where he was loaned to Raith Rovers twice, St Mirren and Livingston. It was his form in West Lothian in the 2018/19 campaign that earned the Stranraer-born hitman a move to English football, first with Blackpool and then Plymouth, where he has been for the past five years. Palsson, who scored for Iceland in their 3-1 win over Scotland on Friday night at Hampden, labelled Hardie 'rapid' and revealed that it is one of his ambitions to play for the national team. "He's a good player,' explained Palsson. 'He's a great finisher, an absolute great finisher. He's so quick, he's rapid. So, yeah, those are his strengths. Hopefully we can hold on to him. But he's done really well now. Two years in a row in the Championship, double-figure goals. 'You know, he's a great professional and obviously he wants to play for his country and, you know, I think he's done enough to get a chance in a friendly. He's my team-mate and Ryan's done really well and hopefully, you know, we'll see him play for Scotland in the future.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Scotland head coach Steve Clarke called up Che Adams, George Hirst, James Wilson and Kieron Bowie into his squad for the current international window. He has also used Lyndon Dykes, Lawrence Shankland and Kevin Nisbet in recent squads. Meanwhile, Palsson has revealed that Iceland had 'blood on the teeth' when they realised the uncertainty created in the Scotland team by an early injury to goalkeeper Angus Gunn and the appearance of rookie replacement Cieran Slicker. Victor Palsson heads the ball past Cieran Slicker to make it 3-1 for Iceland. | SNS Group Gunn was replaced just minutes into Friday's match at Hampden after injuring his ankle. With no other option, Clarke turned to 22-year-old Slicker, who is yet to make a senior appearance for club or country. The 22-year-old went on to have a nightmare debut, at fault for all three Iceland goals as Scotland were booed off the pitch. "I mean, I think I can't put myself in the shoes of a goalkeeper,' said Palsson, who netted Iceland's third goal. 'After two minutes you come on and you could see it already in his first few kicks that he wasn't 100 per cent. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad

Former Celtic star Joe Hart was my hero growing up, he'll help me bounce back from poor Scotland debut
LOOKED UP TO Former Celtic star Joe Hart was my hero growing up, he'll help me bounce back from poor Scotland debut SCOTLAND debut keeper Cieran Slicker will use former Celtic star Joe Hart as his inspiration to bounce back from his nightmare at Hampden. The Ipswich Town kid had a night to forget after he was an early sub for the injured Angus Gunn when he conceded three disappointing goals as Steve Clarke's side crashed to a woeful 3-1 home defeat to Iceland. 3 Cieran Slicker had a Scotland debut to forget Credit: PA 3 He's said Joe Hart's 'never give up' advice will inspire him Credit: Kenny Ramsay 3 The pair were at Manchester City together, though Slicker never hasn't made a full senior club appearance Credit: Reuters Slicker had played just nine minutes of senior football in his career, but was previously capped 17 times by Scotland Under 21s. He got off to a similarly rocky start after making a blunder in just his second cap for Scot Gemmill's side in a 1-0 defeat to Denmark at Tynecastle four years ago when a long range shot from Gustav Isaksen, who is now at Lazio, deceived him. And the former Manchester City keeper revealed then how he recovered from setbacks on the pitch. He said: "Joe Hart was my hero growing up. When I was younger I was a ballboy at City too so I used to watch him up close. "I tried picking up as much as I could. "Over the past few years, I have spoken to him quite a lot. I was lucky enough to be able to be in a position to speak to him. "Joe is a great guy and a great goalkeeper as well, with a great career behind him. "His advice to me was to try and play as many first team games as I could and to never give up. "The goal I lost against Denmark was a tough one and it cost us. It was all about forgetting about the goal for me. "Once it went in, it was gone and there was nothing I could do about it. Fans all spot Wright's reaction to Hart screaming in his face after Man City goal against Arsenal "I know for a keeper it's all about that one moment." And Slicker also recalled when Pep Guardiola handed him his dream debut for Manchester that was spoiled too. He came on as a half time sub for City in a pre-season game against Preston in 2022, but lasted just 11 minutes before he was knocked out after colliding with Preston's Tom Bayliss. He said: "I came on for Zack Steffen. A through ball came in and it was a 50-50 and I got knocked out. It took me about a week or two to recover, but I was fine after that. "At City, they have the best manager in the world, so I took on board what he said to me and I will try to use that for the rest of my career. "The keepers at City were the main influences for me, obviously. Like Ederson. He was great for me. Even just watching him, I learned so much. "Being able to have the ball at your feet is important in the modern-day game. You look at City and Ederson, who is the best in the world at it."
