WRU to propose halving Welsh professional teams to two

The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) will propose reducing the number of professional sides in Wales from four to two. Welsh rugby's governing body has produced a radical plan which includes its "optimal solution" for transforming the struggling WRU is expected to announce its preferred proposals this week which will include two organisations each having a men's and women's will then be a six-week consultation period where the Union will present its favoured option to stakeholders before a final decision on the plans, which is expected to be made by the end of Dragons, Ospreys and Scarlets are currently the four professional men's sides in Wales, but the WRU is suggesting the number of teams is news comes despite the fact that Ospreys have plans to move into a revamped stadium at St Helen's in Swansea for the 2026-27 season, while Scarlets have recently unveiled new said this week that elite professional rugby must continue in Gwent, while Cardiff are currently owned by the WRU. It remains unclear whether the two future sides being proposed will be new entities or existing teams. The WRU has, though, proposed that there will be two organisations which will each have a men's and women's could be 50 players in each men's squad with a budget of £7.8m each, while the women's squads will have 40 players WRU says there will be significantly elevated funding for each men's squad, which would facilitate a radically different profile of talent and Union says the two squads would feature predominantly Welsh-qualified players, while there would be a rethink on non-Welsh qualified WRU would fund the two men's and two women's teams, all of which would be operated under licences, with the governing body giving any owners or investors responsibility for all commercial one would involve the move of the two sides, men's and women's, operating on two will also be a transition to contracting of players and staff within central national two would involve the clubs moving to training at one site which will be known as a national will be home to 400 people, including men's and women's national staff, professional and clubs staff and national academies. The men's and women's academies will be proposals include improving the standard of the Super Rygbi Cymru competition, which is the current level below the men's fully professional is also a pledge to establish a senior women's domestic competition, with an acceptance there is a current lack of high-quality club rugby below the Celtic Challenge, where Gwalia Lightning and Brython Thunder compete. How did we get here? The WRU said in July the current system was failing and unsustainable and that it was looking at a more radical came after Wales' men's side had lost a record-breaking 18 international matches in a row and slipped to 12th in the world rankings, while the four regions have struggled in the United Rugby Championship (URC) and European WRU and regions had been trying to get a new deal over the line after months of negotiation.A glimmer of hope was offered in February when the new Professional Rugby Agreement (PRA) was agreed in principle, with all parties ready to sign in early process was derailed when Cardiff went into temporary administration later that month and were taken over by the WRU which, in the process, absorbed £9m of club and Ospreys wanted clarity from the WRU but said "key issues" were not resolved regarding concerns about favouritism towards and Cardiff put pen to paper, while Scarlets and Ospreys did not sign the PRA in WRU responded by saying it did not intend to continue equally funding four professional teams in the men's game, paving the way for the potential of a reduction in number of professional sides in Wales was most recently reduced in 2004, when the Celtic Warriors ceased to exist after only one year of came after Welsh rugby had switched from the professional club model to a regional system of five sides in 2003.

WRU set to announce plans to cut number of pro clubs in Wales from four to two

The Welsh Rugby Union is expected to announce its plans to cut the number of professional clubs in Wales from four to two. Welsh rugby's governing body is expected to officially lay out its plans for the future of the game over the coming days. If approved, it would mark a seismic change to the professional game in Wales. A formal consultation process is expected to begin this week, where the WRU will enter discussions with the four existing professional clubs - Cardiff, Dragons, Ospreys and Scarlets - along with the supporter groups of each club, a panel of fans, and the Welsh Rugby Players Association. It is not clear whether the two surviving clubs would be any of the existing four.

Defender Burghley Horse Trials: Mutch praises Shanbeg Cooley

While Mutch concedes that Shanbeg Cooley will have his share of doubters, the Whitley Bay-based rider believes his noble steed will win plenty of new fans. 'I've had him now since he was a 5-year-old so I feel like we know each other inside out,' said Mutch, who has previously ridden the now-retired Bronze HD. 'He's the sort of horse that rises to the big occasions and loves a good challenge. I feel he is a proper 'Burghley' horse and it's exciting. 'Nothing's ever too much for him and it's nice to be able to take that out on a course. 'To be honest, I feel like he's still slightly under the radar because he had last year off and I feel people don't know too much about him yet. 'I wouldn't trade him for any other horse there because I feel he's one of the best jumpers at the circuit and one of the fastest in the world. 'I go to these events and see people riding for their lives to get the time and I can take my watch off and cruise around and I feel like I'll achieve it. 'That's not me trying to sound like it's easy but he's so unique because he's so careful and brave and that combination doesn't really mix at the top level.' One of two British eventing majors alongside Badminton Horse Trials, Defender Burghley regularly attracts the world's elite equestrians and Mutch admits he is bursting with anticipation. 'It is one of the true 5* events and you know you've turned up to the big one when you've arrived there,' added Mutch. 'There aren't many places in the world that you give the feeling it does. You just know you're at a special event and that you're in for a tough time. 'He [Shanbeg Cooley] went to Burghley two years ago as a nine-year-old when I didn't know what I was going get and so didn't have the perfect preparation for it. 'He still came out and gave me a serious ride around there so after two more years of preparation and getting him used to the top level, it will be really exciting to see how he finds it coming back.' Defender Burghley Horse Trials (4-7 September 2025) has been a major international sporting and social event for over 50 years. It attracts the world's top equestrians and is attended by vast and enthusiastic crowds. For more information visit
