Tottenham are reportedly in talks with a Bayern Munich midfielder, who was previously linked with a move to Manchester United last summer
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly in talks to sign former Manchester United target Joao Palhinha. The midfielder had a challenging first season at Bayern Munich, but previously excelled in the Premier League with Fulham.

The 30-year-old was restricted to just six league starts for the German club during an injury-plagued campaign following his move worth up to £47.4million last summer. Palhinha was a standout performer during his two years at Craven Cottage and was reported to be a target for United and several other clubs during his time in West London.

Bayern eventually won the race to sign Palhinha, having initially seen a deadline day move collapse in 2023. There has been speculation that United have reignited their interest in Palhinha this summer, but the midfielder could return to the Premier League with a different club after emerging as a target for Spurs.

The Independent has reported that Tottenham have started negotiations over a possible loan move for the former Sporting Lisbon star. It is claimed that Spurs held an interest in Palhinha prior to him joining Bayern.
A temporary move to Spurs could allow Palhinha to find his best form ahead of the 2026 World Cup and prove a point to Bayern boss Vincent Kompany. Tottenham are well-stocked in midfield but may wish to bolster their squad after gaining Champions League qualification through their Europa League triumph.
Palhinha has previously proven to be decisive when taking the next steps in his career. Sky Germany reported that the former Fulham midfielder made it clear he would turn down any approach from United as he remained committed to joining Bayern last summer following his collapsed transfer.
Fulham were reported to have demanded £60m for Palhinha, who was claimed to have attracted interest from United, Barcelona and Bayern. Nevertheless, the doubt surrounding then-United manager Erik ten Hag's position, who would pen a contract extension only to face dismissal in October, failed to improve the club's chances of swaying Palhinha.
United's squandered opportunity could prove to be a boost for Spurs should Palhinha join Thomas Frank's outfit on loan. Yet the defensive midfielder will be keen to sidestep another protracted transfer ordeal, having recalled the uncomfortable predicament he faced at Fulham in 2023.

"Obviously, it affected me and my family a lot, but it's water under the bridge, I don't want to remember too much about it," Palhinha said of his collapsed move to Bayern. "It's a great pride, you know what happened. In my life everything that has been happening – it has been for a reason, I like to think that way. The future will tell me whether what really happened was what had to happen or not.
"But only the future will show me that. I want to continue walking the journey as I've been doing, no one has given me anything throughout my career, everything I've achieved is earned, for my work. I hope that continues to be the case. I'm 28 years old, but I know I can reach higher and it's with this ambition that I face the future."
England manager Thomas Tuchel praised Palhinha when he expressed regret at failing to land his midfield target. "I was sad because I know what he would have added to our team," former Bayern boss Tuchel admitted.

"He was sad and disappointed. We'll speak again about what happened. Everyone did what they had to do, but it was too late in the end."
United brought in Manuel Ugarte from Sporting during the same transfer window that saw Palhinha finally complete his switch to Bayern. The £51m midfielder, who previously played alongside Palhinha, featured in 45 matches during his first campaign at United and has been reunited with manager Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford.
Meanwhile, Tottenham secured a 1-0 victory over north London rivals Arsenal at the Kai Tak Sports Park in Hong Kong on Thursday, with midfielder Pape Matar Sarr netting the match's only goal. The club have recruited Mohammed Kudus for £55m and confirmed permanent deals for former loanees Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel, while also capturing several promising youngsters during the summer transfer window.

Michael Stewart sends Hearts and Hibs predictions over who'll finish third

Michael Stewart is expecting a neck and neck battle for the Premiership's third place - but only one of Hearts or Hibs can claim bragging rights. The ex midfielder at both clubs has been watching on over both side's starts to the season and transfer work. Backed by Tony Bloom's Jamestown Analytics software, Hearts have made a number of signings like Claudio Braga and Stuart Findlay who have made instant Premier Sports Cup impressions. Hibs meanwhile showed up well against FC Midtjylland in Europa League qualifying but were eliminated after extra time. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Dundee are the challenge for Hibs on matchday one while Hearts host Aberdeen in Derek McInnes' first league game as head coach. It was the Easter Road side who finished third last term but Stewart, while the race will be tight, sees the Jambos coming out on top this time around. Michael Stewart sends Hearts and Hibs verdict He told the BBC while tipping Hearts for third: 'For the first time in years, Hearts have made a serious managerial appointment and, with some of the Jamestown signings looking like they may have an impact offensively, it could be a positive partnership for all concerned at Tynecastle. I see a really interesting battle for third between the two Edinburgh sides, as Hibs have transformed into a club who really have their house in order.' Ex Falkirk striker Rory Loy is also backing Hearts. He said: 'Derek McInnes arriving as head coach and actually playing Lawrence Shankland in his favoured position up top equals best of the rest. Simple. Not playing in Europe will be a huge advantage versus the other teams expected to challenge for third.' Motherwell legend Stephen Craigan also gives the Jambos a nod. The ex centre back added: ' Not having group stage European football as a distraction is a huge bonus for the Edinburgh side. The players underperformed last season and, with the additions over the summer, they have a better balance to the squad.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Hibs backing for third place Former Scotland striker Julie Fleeting, however, thinks it could be back to back successes for those at Hibs. She commented: 'David Gray had a tough start as head coach, but then things started to click and, based on their strong second half of last season, they have a good foundation to build on. Their first five games of the season - Dundee, Kilmarnock, Livingston, Falkirk and St Mirren - are all games they can go into confident they can get early points on the board.' Aberdeen icon Willie Miller can look past his beloved Dons, but does think Falkirk managed by ex Hearts boss John McGlynn will be a surprise package. He added: 'If they can cope with European football, the Dons have a cup-winning squad, a proven, successful, experienced manager and a chairman who will back him financially. 'They (Falkirk) have a coach in John McGlynn who likes to play the game in a cultured fashion, which he won't change, so they will be easy on the eye and successful with it.'

European giants make Liverpool star Darwin Nunez top transfer target

Darwin Nunez could yet leave Liverpool this summer despite Napoli moving on from the forward as one of their Serie A rivals enter talks for the former Benfica star AC Milan have made contact with the representatives of Darwin Nunez as they eye a deal for the Liverpool forward. The Italian giants are said to have made the Uruguay international their top target for the final weeks of the transfer window. ‌ Nunez has been widely expected to leave Anfield this summer and the arrival of Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz would appear to have left him further down Arne Slot's pecking order. Liverpool retain an interest in Newcastle star Alexander Isak too and have seen a bid turned down for the Premier League striker. ‌ If the Reds are successful in landing the Sweden, Nunez's position would appear to be even more untenable. But thus far, Liverpool have not been able to find an agreement with any suitors for the former Benfica forward's signature. ‌ Napoli turned their attention elsewhere after being unable to find an agreement with the Reds' hierarchy. Antonio Conte instead added Lorenze Lucca to his side from Udinese on loan, with an obligation to buy for the forward for €26millon (£22.7m). But their Serie A rivals may yet afford Liverpool an opportunity to offload Nunez, who they signed in a deal worth £85m including potential add-ons. Milan are noted to be making a serious attempt to provide Max Allegri with a new forward with Arnaud Kalimuendo, Dusan Vlahovic and Rasmus Hojlund shortlisted alongside Darwin, per Sky Sports in Italy. The Reds striker, 26, did not feature in his side's friendly against Milan but came off the bench days later against Yokohoma FM. Nunez scored in the team's first two friendlies of the summer against Preston and Stoke City too. Slot's emphasis appeared to be on building the attacker's fitness rather than considering life without him, having also revealed Luis Diaz's absence against Milan was due to transfer speculation, before he eventually departed. 'In Darwin's situation, he has trained really well and played a few good games for us already this pre-season," said Slot said last week. "He was injured so we didn't want to take the risk. ‌ 'It was also the same with Wata (Endo) — trained with us all week but we didn't want to take a risk with him either. It is part of pre-season, the boys need to get towards match fitness and that is a thin balance, a thin line sometimes." A fresh offer from the Saudi Arabia is also awaited, with Al-Hilal claimed to have opened talks with the player and his representatives regarding a move. But the only bid for Nunez so far this summer has been from Napoli.
