Parents of boy who died in school coach crash pay tribute to community
Oliver Price, 10, died after the bus he was travelling in overturned on the A396 at Cutcombe Hill near Minehead and slid down a 20ft slope on July 17.
The bus was carrying 60 to 70 pupils and staff who were returning to Minehead Middle School after a trip to Exmoor Zoo days before the end of term.
Oliver's parents, Lucy and Matthew, released a public statement through Avon and Somerset Police thanking their community for its 'incredible response' following the collision.
They said: 'As Oliver's parents we have seen first-hand the incredible response from the community after the awful collision earlier this month.
'We are so very grateful to all the many emergency service workers who responded initially and those who continue to provide support in the aftermath, through the police investigation and the hospital teams who continue to look after those who were injured.'
Oliver's parents also thanked staff at a nearby pub who opened it up to those injured in the crash as a safe hub.
They said: 'We would also like to thank the team at the Rest and Be Thankful pub in Wheddon Cross for opening their doors to everyone that afternoon, without a moment's hesitation, and for making sure everyone was well looked after and providing a meeting place for parents.'
They sent best wishes to the teachers and pupils who were injured, of which two children and three adults remain in hospital.
They said: 'We send our best wishes and hopes for a speedy recovery to the other children and staff on the bus, particularly those who are still in hospital. You are all in our thoughts.
'The support we've received from our amazing community has been overwhelming. To those who left kind messages, or flowers outside the school, we want to say thank you.
'We are also grateful beyond words for all the staff and parents at the wonderful Minehead Middle School and for the love we've been shown by all our family and friends. We truly do appreciate you all.
'Finally, we would also like to pass on our thanks to the police investigation team for their support and ongoing hard work. We know this is a complex and emotive investigation but we appreciate their regular updates and continued efforts.'
The inquest into Oliver's death opened at Somerset Coroner's Court last Thursday.
Vanessa McKinlay, the assistant coroner for Somerset, read the evidence of identification from coroner's officer Ben Batley, which said: 'Oliver was found seated in the coach with his seat belt on. His death was confirmed by the attending paramedic.
'Oliver's provisional cause of death is head injury pending results of laboratory investigations.'
The inquest is due to resume on January 14 with a one-day hearing to involve evidence from witnesses including the adult passengers on the coach, other witnesses, the coach driver, and specialist collision investigators and vehicle examiners.
The headteacher of Minehead Middle School, Laura Mackie, issued a tribute to Oliver, saying the school would 'always treasure the moments we shared with him'.
'The loss of such a brilliant young life has profoundly affected everyone — students, staff, families, and the wider community,' she said in a statement on Thursday.
'We continue to keep Oliver and those closest to him firmly in our thoughts, and we are supporting our school community with great care and sensitivity as we begin to process what has happened.
'Our focus remains on caring for one another and moving forward gently, with compassion, as we begin to navigate the future together.'
Around £100,000 has been raised to support those affected by the coach crash by the Somerset Community Foundation's (SCF) Together for West Somerset appeal as well as individual fundraisers.

Mr McKay's mother Bash Kehinde condemned the pair in the dock as she read out a victim impact Belle, she said: "You did not care that Josh was a father, a son, a grandson, a brother, an uncle and a friend to many."You do not care that you were going to kill him in cold blood in front of his son and you did not care you broke his family into a million pieces."Belle, you saw Josh with his son and you knew his son would witness the murder of his father. There is a special place in hell for you."She told the court that Mr McKay had helped more than 50 young men and had taken in Belle after he was released from jail, giving him money, clothes and a place to stay when he was for Belle, defence barrister Graham Trembath KC said the killing was "a moment of utter madness".Although Belle had previous convictions for 55 offences, Mr Trembath said: "What happened in that barber shop was off the scale."Kirsty Brimelow KC said Parker had expressed "complete remorse" for what happened.

Colin Hendry: Premier League winner and former Scotland captain admits harassing ex-partner
Former Scottish international footballer Colin Hendry has been given a 12-month community order and a restraining order for harassing his ex-partner. The former central defender who captained Scotland at a World Cup and helped Blackburn Rovers win the Premier League title, was sentenced at Preston Magistrates' Court on Wednesday. Hendry, 59, had admitted harassment of his former partner over a period of six weeks in 2024 after their relationship ended. Natasha Clark, senior crown prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) North West, said: 'Colin Hendry harassed a former partner for over six weeks after their relationship ended after she stopped returning his calls. 'He ignored her wishes and breached boundaries she put in place, using multiple different platforms to contact her. 'Hendry's behaviour was intimidating and persistent, causing the victim immense distress, but despite this he initially refused to accept it was harassment. 'This outcome is a clear indication that the CPS will not hesitate to prosecute anyone guilty of harassment whether this is in person or online.' The court heard Hendry sent his ex messages from multiple different email accounts, utilising no caller ID to call her after she blocked his number. When his calls went unanswered, he turned to other means, including dozens of emails and messaging her on LinkedIn. After she said she no longer wanted any kind of relationship with him, Hendry consistently attempted to contact her, showing up at her house with unwanted gifts and flowers on several occasions. The victim reported Hendry to the police, saying she felt depressed and anxious because of his behaviour. She said she was unable to leave the house without fearing an unannounced visit from him. Lancashire Police contacted Hendry to warn him about his behaviour, telling him to stop all communications to the ex-partner which were unwanted. While Hendry admitted to his conduct, he tried to deny it was harassment, claiming he never received a written warning from police so continued to contact her and that he was simply concerned for the affected person and her dog. Hendry later admitted one count of harassment without violence. He started his football career with Keith in the Highland League before moving to Dundee then winning the league title with Blackburn Rovers and also played for Manchester City. He was Scotland's captain for the 1998 World Cup campaign and also played for Rangers in the Scottish Premiership.

Woman dies and nine-year-old girl seriously injured after limousine and car collide
A woman has died and a nine-year-old girl is in hospital with serious injuries after a crash involving a limousine and a car. Two men have been arrested in connection with the incident, with six other passengers across both vehicles also injured. The black Mercedes 220E limousine and black Citroen DS3 collided at a crossroad junction between Wellingborough Road and Broughton Road in Pytchley, near Kettering, at about 10.15pm on Tuesday, Northamptonshire Police said. The woman, in her 40s, who was a passenger in the Mercedes, died at the scene. The girl, also a passenger in the vehicle, was taken to Birmingham Children's Hospital, the force said. Another adult and three children who were travelling in the limousine and an adult and child passenger in the Citroen were taken to hospital with minor injuries. A 53-year-old man from Sandy, Bedfordshire, and a 22-year-old man from Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, have been arrested and remain in police custody, the force said.
