IBM claims 'real world' edge in quantum computing race

The Star11-06-2025
SAN FRANCISCO: Technology veteran IBM on June 10 laid out a plan to have a "practical" quantum computer tackling big problems before the end of this decade.
Current quantum computers are still experimental and face significant challenges, including high error rates. Companies like IBM, Google, and others are working to build more stable and scalable quantum systems.
Real-world innovations that quantum computing has the potential to tackle include developing better fuels, materials, pharmaceuticals, or even new elements. However, delivering on that promise has always seemed some way off.
IBM insists that it is now closer than ever and can map out the path toward having a quantum system that can fulfill actual use cases.
This breakthrough comes thanks to a system being built in a data center in Poughkeepsie, New York, which IBM billed as a pioneering move toward making quantum an everyday work tool.
The company's "Starling" quantum computer, targeted for completion in four years, will serve as the foundation for a next-generation machine ready by 2033 that will be dramatically more powerful in terms of the complexity of the problems it can tackle.
"You've probably heard people talk about all these things, but we actually have plans for how to build it," IBM fellow and director of quantum systems Jerry Chow told AFP.
The performance leap by Starling from today's systems will be on par with the jump from flip phones to smartphones, according to the company.
Chow credited an innovative way to correct errors and ramp up fault tolerance with clearing the way for Starling.
"People talk about error correction from the point of view of it being the Holy Grail," Chow said. "That really is the thing that is necessary to drive solutions at scale."
While hailing IBM's "significant advancement," Gartner analyst Mark Horvath noted that challenges remain despite the milestone and said real-world applications for quantum systems remain "somewhat theoretical."
Quantum AI?
After several dashed predictions, quantum computing is accelerating rapidly.
US tech giants, startups, banks, and pharmaceutical companies are pouring investments into this revolutionary technology.
IBM announced plans in April to invest US$150bil (RM 635.99bil) in the United States over five years, including US$30bil (RM 127.19bil) earmarked for research and development to bolster manufacturing of mainframe and quantum computers.
IBM has also outlined a "quantum-centric supercomputing" vision that involves using the new technology to augment traditional computer resources, letting each play to its strengths.
If all goes to plan, quantum computing could start hitting its stride as generative artificial intelligence (AI) improves at breakneck speed, giving it incredible processing power.
"The potential is tremendous," Chow said.
Ever more powerful
Quantum computers already operate today.
IBM claims its quantum services have generated sales of US$1bil (RM4.24bil), though current applications remain limited mainly to research.
While classical computing relies on bits – the smallest, most basic unit of digital information – with just two states (0 or 1), quantum computing harnesses so-called qubits with infinite possible states.
The "Bluejay" system, slated for completion four years after the "Starling" in 2033, will operate with 2,000 logical qubits and a billion "quantum gates" – a technical reference to operations or parts of a problem it can handle, according to IBM.
Each added qubit theoretically doubles computing capacity, allowing quantum computers to analyze countless possibilities simultaneously, solving in minutes what might take millions of years classically.
"This is the most exciting thing that I can be spending my time on," said Chow, who has worked on quantum at IBM for 15 years. "We get to redefine what computation looks like for the future."
IBM – which has trailed Microsoft, Amazon, and Google for classic computing products in recent years – claims the world's largest fleet of quantum computing systems.
Google late last year showed off a new quantum computing chip that it said could bring practical quantum computing closer to reality.
Its custom chip called "Willow" does in minutes what it would take leading supercomputers 10 septillion years to complete, according to the search engine giant.
Tech giant Microsoft in February unveiled its own quantum computer chip, Majorana 1, saying it made the technology more reliable for real-world use. – AFP

Google fined US$36m over Android search deals in Australia

SYDNEY: Google has agreed to pay a Aus$55 million (US$36 million) fine for making deals to pre-install only its search engine on Android phones sold by Telstra and Optus. Australia's competition watchdog filed proceedings in the Federal Court alongside Google Asia Pacific for the penalty. The court will now determine if the fine and related orders are appropriate, according to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. 'Conduct that restricts competition is illegal in Australia because it usually means less choice, higher costs or worse service for consumers,' said commission chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb. Google admitted to striking deals with Telstra and Optus between December 2019 and March 2021 while cooperating with regulators. Telstra and Optus received a share of advertising revenue in exchange for exclusively pre-installing Google's search engine. 'Google has admitted in reaching those understandings with each of Telstra and Optus it was likely to have had the effect of substantially lessening competition,' the commission stated. Google said it was pleased to resolve the regulator's concerns, noting the provisions were no longer in its agreements. 'We are committed to providing Android device makers more flexibility to preload browsers and search apps,' a Google spokesperson said. Telstra and Optus signed court-enforceable agreements last year not to make new default search deals with Google for Android devices. - AFP

Avangaad anchors 2Q FY2025 growth on long-term contracts; charter fleet at sustained high utilisation

MAIN Market-listed Avangaad Bhd [formerly E.A. Technique (M) Bhd] has locked in significant multi-year charter wins in its Marine Service Vessels Group (fast crew boats and tugboats) as evident in its 2Q FY2025 financial results ended June 30, 2025. Now a marine COP (coordinator, operator and partner) player, the group raked in RM66.8 mil of contracts from Northport (M) Bhd in addition to other multi-year fast crew boat (FCB) charters. Aside from having secured near-term revenues, Avangaad has also expanded its long-term service footprint across Malaysia's key ports. For its 2Q FY2025, Avangaad posted a 5.4% % revenue growth to RM32,.27 mil (2Q FY2024: RM30.6 mil) while its 1H FY2025 revenue was flat at RM62.25 mil (1H FY2024: RM 61.81 mil) on the back of higher vessel utilisation and improved charter rates for fast crew boat contracts. Apart from new contracts totalling RM66.8 mil, the group has secured three fast crew boat (FCB) contracts worth RM29.2 mil during the six-month period. These include a two-year extension for three existing harbour tugboats and a new five-year daily charter for three harbour tugboats. The solid pipeline reflects the group's proactive approach and proven capability in securing earning opportunities. Its disciplined strategy ensures cash flow visibility and underpins growth certainty. Lucrative order book Looking ahead, Avangaad's management is executing a three-phase growth plan to demonstrate its prioritisation in delivering operational efficiencies, cost management and selective contract wins to reinforce the group's strategic presence as a trusted partner in both the oil & gas (O&G) and non-O&G segments. 'Currently in Phase 1, we're focusing on fortifying our position through new and renewed contracts alongside increased fleet utilisation while tightening cost management to maintain uncompromised operational efficiency,' revealed Avangaad's executive director Datuk Wira Mubarak Hussain Akhtar Husin. 'As we move into Phase 2 which is already in progress, we're set to expand and diversify by growing our fleet size and asset types, deepening port presence across Malaysia, and maintaining balanced earnings mix across O&G, non-O&G and marine logistics.' Added Mubarak: 'Moving forward, we shall regionalise and modernise under Phase 3 by entering selected ASEAN markets through both existing and new strategic partnerships. Mitra laptops from Google, not second-hand units, says Ramanan

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri R Ramanan has defended the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra)'s move to provide second-hand laptops to more than 6,000 students. Speaking at a press conference, the Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister said that, based on reviews, the programme had delivered positive results. He was responding to allegations raised by Ganabatirau Veraman (PH-Klang) regarding unusable second-hand laptops being distributed to Indian students. "Overall, a review of the programme's impact found that it had delivered positive results, according to feedback from school administrators and teachers. "In addition, the supplier has taken responsibility for resolving all complaints submitted by schools from time to time. "So, I don't understand why some people are making such claims. These are irresponsible parties. "These laptops were not supplied by Ah Chong, Amir, Raju, Muniandi, or Ahmad. They were supplied by Google. Isn't Google big enough for them? All of these computers came with a warranty," he said. He explained that distributing brand-new laptops would require a substantial amount of funds. "This is Mitra, not a ministry. We have to be prudent. "We have already distributed laptops to 520 SJKT schools, amounting to 6,000 computers. These were provided under Google's CSR programme. "If we had purchased brand-new laptops, it would have required a huge budget, so how would we fund other programmes?" he said. Ramanan added that although there had been some minor issues, they were immediately rectified. "I don't understand the purpose of these accusations. If you want political mileage, don't use our community for it. Find something else," he said.
