Manchester United embarrassed by Asean All-Stars, as fans see how far idols have fallen

The only sense of urgency Manchester United showed in Kuala Lumpur last night was on the white-knuckle ride from their W Hotel accommodation to Bukit Jalil National Stadium.
It is indicative of the clout United still carry, nonetheless, that they brought the Malaysian capital to a halt, necessitating the need for a police escort to avoid being late for their own party.
How it fell flat for the English visitors, who suffered a 1-0 defeat to Asean All-Stars, after Maung Maung Lwin, a winger from Myanmar, flashed a 71st-minute drive past substitute keeper Tom Heaton to heap further misery on embattled United.
Very few of a crowd officially counted at 72,550 were here to watch the home team, whose starting 11 was represented by six of the region's 10 nations.
In the opening half, a din greeted the All-Stars' every incursion into their opponents' penalty area, regardless, but it was hard to tell if that was out of local loyalty, or because of the adoration that United keeper Andre Onana clearly commands in these parts.

Not long after Onana raised the roof with a fairly routine first-half save down to his left from Sandro Reyes, the Filipino midfielder, Ruben Amorim reached for his substitute's bench.

Recalled Malaysian footballer who was hurt in acid attack still avoids shopping centres

Malaysian footballer Faisal Halim said 'he is not scared' but still avoids shopping centres 13 months after being doused in acid while out with his family, leaving him with fourth-degree burns. Advertisement The striker, who had been a mainstay of the national team since making his debut in 2019, was recalled to the Malaysia squad in March for their Asian Cup qualifier against Nepal. He is in line to face Vietnam on June 10 at Kuala Lumpur's Bukit Jalil Stadium in another qualifying match as the Harimau, or Tigers, bid to reach back-to-back Asian Cups for the first time since 1980. The Vietnamese lead Group F on goal difference from Malaysia after one game. Halim appeared as a 74th-minute substitute in his side's 2-0 win over the Nepalese, in what was his first international game since the attack, and Malaysia head coach Peter Cklamovski told media this week that Halim was increasingly gaining his trust. 'Faisal plays an important role for Harimau Malaysia,' the Australian said. Faisal Halim (in yellow) came on as a substitute in Malaysia's 2-0 win over Nepal. World Cup: South Korea near qualification as Uzbekistan chase history

Son Heung-min and Lee Kang-in – fresh off European trophy wins – aim to lead South Korea to the World Cup, with four remaining automatic spots from Asia up for grabs. Japan and Iran have already sealed their berths at the tournament next year in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. South Korea are guaranteed to join them on Thursday if they avoid defeat against Iraq in Basra. Even if they lose, they will have another opportunity at home to Kuwait next Tuesday in Group B. South Korea and Spurs captain Son did not have his best club season, but the 32-year-old attacker finished it off by lifting the Europa League trophy. International teammate Lee collected a Champions League winner's medal with Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday after they thrashed Inter Milan 5-0 in Munich, although he remained on the bench for the final. Haunted by baby elephant's death, Malaysian lorry driver shares anguish: ‘my heart aches'

The lorry driver whose vehicle struck and killed a baby elephant on a dark mountain road in Malaysia last month has spoken of the anguish and guilt he continues to carry. Advertisement 'It weighs heavily on me. Each time I pass by the road, my heart aches,' said the driver, who wished to be identified only as Azhar. Azhar was behind the wheel in the early hours of May 11, travelling along the East–West Highway in Perak when the fatal accident occurred. The male calf was pinned beneath the lorry. In a heart-wrenching scene that left many Malaysians in tears, the calf's mother repeatedly charged the lorry in a desperate attempt to free her young, then stood vigil beside the vehicle for nearly five hours. 'When I think about the baby elephant, I feel really sad. I will not forget the moment,' he said, recounting his experience that night. Advertisement A seasoned driver from Kedah, Azhar has transported chickens from Penang to a slaughterhouse in Kota Baru for the past two years, using the same forest-lined route almost daily. His days typically begin at 4.30pm, when he collects poultry from farms, before setting off on the long overnight drive by 8pm.
