Trump's team is waking up to the reality of rivalry with Russia

This may surprise some observers, especially critics of Trump who consider him supportive of Putin's aims. The view that Trump sympathises with Russia, or is perhaps compromised by it, has never gone out of style, even though there have always been problems with the theory.
For one, Trump's first administration was
far more at odds with Putin's government – over the Korean peninsula, Syria, Iran and over sanctions – than it was aligned.
The first Trump administration included Republican politicians who were more opposed to Putin's government than the US president himself, including then vice-president Mike Pence, Central Intelligence Agency director-turned-US secretary of state Mike Pompeo, UN ambassador Nikki Haley and defence secretary James Mattis – the latter of whom declared Russia a 'strategic competitor'.
However, Trump has publicly expressed
admiration for Putin , more than he did for liberal democratic politicians such as former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau or former German chancellor Angela Merkel. But admiration and alignment are not the same. For example, Trump has been consistently complimentary of Chinese President
Xi Jinping , even as he hammers China with
tariffs and
other penalties

That said, isn't Trump's second administration different in temperament from his first? Instead of Pence, Trump now has the avowed 'post-liberal'
J.D. Vance as vice-president, who has declared his indifference to how the Ukraine conflict ends and stated his sympathy for far-right figures such as Curtis Yarvin, who are rooting for Russia's success.

Trump claims trade deal struck with Indonesia; Bessent calls China deal timeline ‘flexible'

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that his administration had reached a trade deal with Indonesia, while his Treasury Department chief cut China some slack on the deadline for a final deal of its own. Advertisement Speaking to reporters at the White House on Tuesday, Trump said that Indonesia would charge no tariffs on US imports, while exports from the southeast Asian country to America would be subject to a 19 per cent levy. 'They are going to pay 19 per cent and we are going to pay nothing ... we will have full access into Indonesia, and we have a couple of those deals that are going to be announced,' Trump said. On his Truth Social account, Trump called the deal a 'landmark', saying that it 'opens up Indonesia's ENTIRE MARKET to the United States for the first time in History'. 'As part of the Agreement, Indonesia has committed to purchasing $15 Billion Dollars in U.S. Energy, $4.5 Billion Dollars in American Agricultural Products, and 50 Boeing Jets, many of them 777's,' Trump wrote in his post. Mike Waltz, Trump's pick for United Nations ambassador, wants to ‘make the UN great again'

Mike Waltz, US President Donald Trump's nominee for United Nations ambassador, vowed on Tuesday to make the world body 'great again' – and that he would do so by confronting Beijing's expanding influence while leading an overhaul of what he described as a bloated, favouritism-plagued institution. Advertisement 'Countering China … is critical,' the former Florida congressman said during his confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Waltz called it 'absurd' that China, the world's second-largest economy, was still 'treated as a developing nation' and that most UN agencies continued to give the country favourable status. He accused Beijing of strategically placing its personnel throughout the UN system – 'at all levels, including bodies that set international standards, aviation, telecommunications, IP' – and pledged to restore American leadership and ensure the US maintains a 'strong voice' at the world body. Waltz added that he was 'confident under this president's leadership, we can continue to spread peace and prosperity, and I'm confident we can make the UN great again'. Trump says Ukraine shouldn't target Moscow, amid talk of US-supplied missiles

US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that Ukraine should not target Moscow, after the Kremlin charged that a new US plan to supply weapons to Kyiv along with sanctions threats against Russia would delay peace efforts. Advertisement Trump on Monday gave Russia 50 days to strike a peace deal with Ukraine, voicing exasperation with Moscow, and announcing that Nato members would supply Kyiv with new military aid. In what would be an even more extraordinary shift, the Financial Times reported that Trump spoke to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about providing US missiles to hit Moscow. But asked by reporters at the White House if Zelensky should look at striking the Russian capital, Trump replied: 'No, he shouldn't target Moscow.' Trump had taken office vowing to end the conflict swiftly and to stop the flow of billions of dollars of US weapons to Ukraine. 02:08 Trump threatens Russia with 100% 'secondary' tariffs if no deal on Ukraine ceasefire Trump threatens Russia with 100% 'secondary' tariffs if no deal on Ukraine ceasefire The Republican put heavy pressure on Zelensky and initially touted his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
