West Bengal protests move to shift IPL final from Kolkata's Eden Gardens to Ahmedabad

The Hindu22-05-2025

A political row has erupted over the decision to shift the venue of final match of the Indian Premier League 2025, as well as the second qualifier, from Kolkata to Ahmedebad. West Bengal Minister of Sports and Youth Welfare Aroop Biswas alleged on Thursday that politics was behind the cricketing move.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had announced that the second qualifier and the IPL final, scheduled to take place on June 1 and 3 respectively, will be held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad instead of at Kolkata's Eden Garden Stadium.
'The IPL play-offs and final have been moved from Eden Gardens due to political reasons. You are doing politics against Mamata Banerjee, but why are the cricket lovers of Bengal being deprived,' the State Minister asked. 'It is the IPL's rule that last year's champions' home ground will host the final,' he pointed out, adding that the West Bengal government is protesting the shifting of the matches.
'No law and order issues'
Mr. Biswas refuted claims of law and order problems or adverse weather conditions as justifiable reasons for the shift. 'Seven IPL matches have been held at Eden. No untoward incident has taken place. An average of 60,000 to 65,000 spectators have watched each match. So there is no question of law and order problems,' the Minister said. He was addressing a press conference along with Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma, who added that neither the general public nor organisers had raised any concerns about law and order.
West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar had said that IPL matches were moved out of Kolkata because of 'law and order issues'.
Mr. Biswas also questioned the weather-related justification cited by the BCCI, noting that weather forecasts for Kolkata for June 1 to 4 will only be available after May 26, according to the India Meteorological Department.
'No forecast has been issued for the first week of June in 2025 in the public domain. Since when did the BCCI become a weather expert?' the Minister asked. He also cited a letter from the head of the Regional Meteorological Centre at Alipore in Kolkata on the weather forecast.

Rajeev Shukla likely to replace Roger Binny as BCCI President

With the incumbent Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president, Roger Binny, set to turn 70 next month, Rajeev Shukla is likely to take over as the interim chief for a period of three months. According to the BCCI constitution, an office-bearer cannot hold a position beyond the age of 70, which makes Binny, a member of India's 1983 World Cup-winning team, ineligible for the role after July 19. Shukla, who is currently the vice-president of the Board and the senior-most office-bearer in the present regime, will oversee the president's duties until a new chief is elected. Shukla has held the position of BCCI vice-president since late 2020. He also served as the secretary of the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association until 2017 and was the chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL) until 2018.

Cricket, connections & courtship: How Rinku Singh met SP MP Priya Saroj

LUCKNOW: Cricketer Rinku Singh and Samajwadi Party MP Priya Saroj first crossed paths through one of Priya's friend's father, who is also a cricketer. The connection eventually blossomed into a relationship, supported by both families. According to Priya's father, Tufani Saroj, SP MLA from Kerakat in Jaunpur, the two had known each other for some time before formally announcing their intent to marry. The couple's engagement is scheduled for June 8 in Lucknow, followed by a wedding ceremony on November 18 at Hotel Taj in Varanasi (Kashi). Confirming the dates, Tufani Saroj said on Sunday that preparations are already underway to host grand celebrations. Prominent political leaders, especially from the Samajwadi Party, along with cricket stars, film personalities, and industrialists are expected to attend the events. In January, Tufani Saroj publicly announced the upcoming marriage between his daughter and the T20 cricket sensation after the two families held initial discussions to formalise the alliance. Like Rinku, who rose to fame by smashing five sixes in the final over during an IPL 2023 match against Gujarat Titans—completing the highest-ever last-over chase of 29 runs for Kolkata Knight Riders—Priya too had a spectacular rise. She became one of the youngest parliamentarians in the country by winning the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Machhlishahr (reserved), a constituency previously represented three times by her father before he shifted to contest from the Kerakat assembly seat in 2022. With Rinku focusing on the T20 series against England and the IPL, and Priya involved in her political campaign, both families agreed to decide the wedding dates only after the couple could sit together post-elections and tournaments. Now, with the dates set, the families are preparing to celebrate the union of two rising stars in cricket and politics.
