West Bengal protests move to shift IPL final from Kolkata's Eden Gardens to Ahmedabad
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had announced that the second qualifier and the IPL final, scheduled to take place on June 1 and 3 respectively, will be held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad instead of at Kolkata's Eden Garden Stadium.
'The IPL play-offs and final have been moved from Eden Gardens due to political reasons. You are doing politics against Mamata Banerjee, but why are the cricket lovers of Bengal being deprived,' the State Minister asked. 'It is the IPL's rule that last year's champions' home ground will host the final,' he pointed out, adding that the West Bengal government is protesting the shifting of the matches.
'No law and order issues'
Mr. Biswas refuted claims of law and order problems or adverse weather conditions as justifiable reasons for the shift. 'Seven IPL matches have been held at Eden. No untoward incident has taken place. An average of 60,000 to 65,000 spectators have watched each match. So there is no question of law and order problems,' the Minister said. He was addressing a press conference along with Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma, who added that neither the general public nor organisers had raised any concerns about law and order.
West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar had said that IPL matches were moved out of Kolkata because of 'law and order issues'.
Mr. Biswas also questioned the weather-related justification cited by the BCCI, noting that weather forecasts for Kolkata for June 1 to 4 will only be available after May 26, according to the India Meteorological Department.
'No forecast has been issued for the first week of June in 2025 in the public domain. Since when did the BCCI become a weather expert?' the Minister asked. He also cited a letter from the head of the Regional Meteorological Centre at Alipore in Kolkata on the weather forecast.

‘You'll have to wait for his chance': Ajit Agarkar on Shreyas Iyer's exclusion from Asia Cup squad
Following India's announcement of the Asia Cup squad, chief selector Ajit Agarkar stated that Shreyas Iyer did not find a spot in the squad, as we can pick 15 at the moment, and Iyer has to wait for his chance. The squad was announced during a press conference attended by T20I skipper Suryakumar and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, which was held after a selection meeting which also featured the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia. India will kick off their campaign against the UAE on September 10, while the high-voltage game against Pakistan is scheduled for September 14, with both fixtures set to be played in Dubai. India will play their final group stage fixture against Oman on September 19 in Abu Dhabi. "With regards to Shreyas, not his fault, nor is it ours. It's just that you can pick 15 and at the moment you'll have to wait for his chance," Agarkar told the media. Iyer ended up as the sixth-highest run-getter in IPL 2025 and had his best season, scoring 604 runs in 17 matches and innings at an average of 50.33, strike rate of 175.07 and six fifties. His best score was 97*. Despite a great IPL season, he missed out on finding a spot in the squad. Yashasvi Jaiswal has been named in the reserve players for the Asia Cup. Agarkar, commenting on his exclusion from the 15-member squad, said it's unfortunate, and Abhishek Sharma, alongside his batting, can also bowl, which gives India an extra option. "With regards to Yashasvi, I mean, it's just unfortunate again. You know, there's Abhishek Sharma, what he's done over the last few months or a year or so that he's been with the team, plus that he can bowl a little bit, gives us an option if required by the captain. One of these guys was always going to miss out. It's just unfortunate that Yashasvi might have to wait for his chance," he added. Jaiswal was the back-up opener ahead of Gill for the T20 World Cup last year. He was the backup as India wanted to open with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Having made 723 runs in 23 T20Is with a century and five fifties at a strike rate of over 164 throughout his career, Jaiswal's 559-run IPL 2025 season (in 14 matches with six fifties at SR of almost 160) brought back the leftie into T20I conversations. 'Will come into the equation if we need four spinners' All-rounder Washington Sundar has also been named in the reserve players. On his contention for the upcoming T20 World Cup next year, Agarkar said Sundar will always be in the scheme, and this is not the final squad for the World Cup. "He'll always be in the scheme of things. This is not the final squad for the World Cup. At the moment, we have three spinners in the squad. Two mystery spinners in Varun, Kuldeep and Akshar. They've been around for a while. Whether we need four spinners, he might always come into the equation, if and when that happens. At the moment, we thought Rinku was the spare batsman we might need. Obviously, Sanju and Jitesh are the two keepers who bat at different positions," Agarkar said. Indian T20 skipper Surya Kumar Yadav spoke about his discussion with wicketkeeper/batter Jitesh Sharma post T20 World Cup last year and said he's been a completely different cricketer. Sharma has done really well, which earned him a spot in the Asia Cup squad. Jitesh Sharma has been chosen as a backup wicketkeeper-batter for Sanju Samson. "I think post the T20 World Cup, we spoke a lot on how to approach, how to go about it. Then we spoke about not think about the milestones ahead. Follow your journey. I think he's been a completely different cricketer post that. He's taken one game at a time. All challenges slow and steady, the way he did in the IPL and also in the domestic tournaments, which he played. The T20S and the one-day, I think he's done really well and he's earned his spot again," Yadav said. Jitesh shone for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) win for the first time this year, scoring 261 runs in 11 innings at an average of 37.28 and a strike rate of 176.35. After the group stage, the tournament will proceed to the Super 4, where the top two teams from each group will qualify. If India finishes at the top of Group A, then all of their Super 4 matches will be held in Dubai. If India finishes second, then one of their Super 4 clashes will be held in Abu Dhabi and the remaining two in Dubai. The Super 4 stage will run from September 20 to 26. Dubai will host the final, which is scheduled for September 28. Team India squad for Asia Cup: Surya Kumar Yadav (C), Shubman Gill (VC), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson (WK), Harshit Rana, Rinku SinghReserve players: Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, Yashasvi Jaiswal. "What A Shame": BCCI Blasted For Shreyas Iyer's Asia Cup Omission
Shreyas Iyer 's exclusion from India's Asia Cup squad has led to strong criticism of the Ajit Agarkar -led selection committee. Speaking during the squad announcement press conference on Tuesday, Agarkar opened up on his snub, insisting that Iyer missed out due to abundance of talent in the format. After guiding Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the IPL title last year, Iyer led Punjab Kings (PBKS) all the way to the final in 2025, where they lost to Virat Kohli 's Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). He also played a crucial role with the bat as India lifted the Champions Trophy earlier this year. "About Shreyas, who can he replace? No fault of his, nor is it ours. At the moment, you can just pick 15. So he will have to wait for his chance. We have got some serious options in T20 not the easiest squad to pick but good headache to have," said Agarkar. However, fans were not happy with the selectors ignoring Iyer, who was not even part of the five-man reserves for the tournament. - Most Runs in Champions Trophy - More Runs than Shubman Gill in WC - Reached IPL Finals being Top Run Scorer of Team Gautam Gambhir is just jealous of him. There is not even a single reason to drop Shreyas Iyer. — Selfless(@SelflessCricket) August 19, 2025 They didn't select Shreyas Iyer because he could have been a lethal threat to the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill. When you can't compete with him , Eliminate him. Yet again politics won. — PIXEL77 (@SaviourShrey96) August 19, 2025 Setbacks came to him through injuries, politics, grudges but my man never bowed down to anything . I love you Shreyas Iyer — Parv (@ParvCryEmoji) August 19, 2025 Shreyas Iyer's reality right now - no spot in Tests, no spot in T20Is, not even in India A. Despite performing in domestics & IPL, he's still left waiting. Toughest phase of his career. — Atul (@tiwariaatul) August 19, 2025 What a shame, why Shreyas Iyer is not in the list. — Old मोंक (@mannudada111) August 19, 2025 Notably, Test skipper Shubman Gill was recalled to the side for the tournament, and also named vice-captain, replacing Axar Patel. Both Suryakumar Yadav and Agarkar said the Asia Cup signals the start of India's cycle for the next T20 World Cup. Agarkar was asked whether Gill's return to the squad as vice-captain is an indicator that he may take up the leadership mantle in the future. "He led in T20I (Zimbabwe), and in the Test team, he is already leading, and like Surya mentioned, he was vice-captain in the last T20I, so we obviously see some leadership qualities in him, and his form in England was what we were hoping for. He obviously exceeded all our expectations, with the kind of form that he showed with his bat, which is a great sign when there's so much pressure on you as a captain," said Agarkar.
