PENAMPANG: The Ministry of Communications has called on all media clubs across the country to collect detailed data on the salaries of media practitioners in their respective states. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the information is crucial before the matter can be brought forward for discussion in the near future. 'I have instructed the coalition of media clubs in each state to gather data so the ministry can have a clear picture of the actual situation, especially regarding salaries. 'We're aware that this salary issue is not limited to Sabah. That's why we need to understand the situation across the board,' he said. He said that media professionals include both full-time journalists and part-time contributors or stringers, and any review must take these categories into account. Fahmi was responding to questions on the low wages faced by several long-serving media practitioners in Sabah, many of whom reportedly still earn less than RM2,000 per month. He was speaking after presenting aid under the Kasih@Hawana Fund to Vicky Sylvester Matanjang, a photographer with the Sabah Information Department, who was seriously injured in a road accident in March. Vicky, who has served the department for 18 years since 2007, suffered fractures to six left ribs and his left arm, and now requires ongoing physiotherapy. Earlier, Bernama Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin also presented contributions to Hafizul Andie Zulkarnain, 35, a journalist with Sabah News, who recently underwent surgery following complications from a twisted intestine and a ruptured appendix. When asked if additional funding would be allocated for the Kasih@Hawana Fund this year, Fahmi said the ministry would first utilise the remaining funds from two previous Hawana programmes, amounting to RM1 million, announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last year. 'We've requested Bernama to explore mechanisms to raise more funds for media practitioners, but for now, we need to exhaust the current allocation,' he said. The Kasih@Hawana Fund, an initiative by the Ministry of Communications and managed by Bernama, was launched in conjunction with National Journalists Day 2023. It reflects the government's empathy and appreciation for the media's role in society. Don't misuse titles and state honours, Pahang Sultan warns recipients
KUANTAN: Titles and state honours should not be used as an excuse for abusing power, nor are they mere ornaments or sources of pride at social gatherings, says Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah. His Royal Highness said these awards represent a symbol of dignity, trust and honour – attributes reserved for those who uphold integrity and respect the laws of the state. 'Such honours cannot and will not protect individuals who violate the law, betray the state or undermine justice. 'I will not tolerate the misuse of the honour bestowed upon individuals to oppress others, steal state resources or tarnish the reputation of the royal institution,' Sultan Abdullah said during the investiture ceremony held at Balai Mahkota, Istana Abdulaziz here yesterday, Bernama reported. His Royal Highness said effective immediately, any individual holding state titles found to be involved in criminal activities, corruption, land encroachment, illegal mining or logging without a permit, will face immediate suspension or revocation. The state Ruler added that to date, 49 out of 67 individuals are awaiting the revocation of their state honours due to various violations. On the issue of illegal land encroachment, Sultan Abdullah called for a comprehensive inspection, investigation and strict enforcement across all districts. Meanwhile, Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup heads the list of 58 recipients of state awards, honours and medals in conjunction with the 66th birthday of Sultan Abdullah. Also in attendance were Tengku Ampuan of Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah and Tengku Mahkota of Pahang Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah. Arthur was among the recipients of the Sri Sultan Ahmad Shah Pahang (SSAP) award, which carries the title Datuk Seri, along with Pahang state secretary Datuk Nazri Abu Bakar, Bank Negara governor Datuk Seri Shaik Abdul Rasheed Abdul Ghaffour and army chief Jen Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan. Eight individuals received the Darjah Sultan Ahmad Shah Pahang (DSAP), which also carries the title Datuk. They included Pahang legal adviser Muhammad Saifuddin Hashim Musaimi, Pahang Land and Mines director Datuk Razihan Adzharuddin, deputy state secretary (development) Datuk Ali Syahbana Sabaruddin and Air Region 2 commander (Labuan) Mjr-Jen Datuk Norli Hisham Alwi. Pahang Sultan revokes honours, warns against land encroachment and division
KUANTAN: His Highness Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, the Sultan of Pahang, addressed critical state issues during the Investiture Ceremony at Istana Abdulaziz in conjunction with his 66th birthday. The Ruler revealed that 49 out of 67 individuals are awaiting the revocation of their state honours due to various violations. He expressed concern over individuals falsely invoking his name or the Pahang Palace's authority for personal gain. 'Certain individuals falsely claim royal approval or protection, which has no basis,' His Highness stated. On illegal land encroachment, Al-Sultan Abdullah called for comprehensive inspections and strict enforcement across all districts. 'I do not want Pahang's agricultural industry, particularly the durian sector, to suffer like neighbouring countries where weak land management led to monopolisation,' he said. His Highness also voiced disappointment over those sowing racial and religious discord. 'I urge the youth to use social media responsibly—to build, not destroy; to unite, not divide,' he emphasised. Regarding healthcare, the Sultan stressed the urgency of completing Maran Hospital, calling it a critical necessity. He also encouraged SME growth, urging reduced bureaucratic hurdles for entrepreneurs. In his royal address, His Highness pushed for stronger welfare initiatives, including targeted assistance, job training, and housing support under the Pahang Prosperity Initiative. - Bernama
