Serena Williams' Gym Selfies Spark Weight Loss Debate

Buzz Feed16-07-2025
Unfortunately, this isn't the first time Serena Williams's physical appearance has been the target of scrutiny by the public, but this time, fans are firing back at the negativity.
Serena, who's often referred to as the G.O.A.T. (greatest of all time) when it comes to tennis, has been the target of criticism since she began playing the sport professionally at the young age of 14, with her older sister, Venus Williams, who's also a highly decorated Olympian.
From the beads she wore in her hair...
...to the "controversial" outfits she rocked on the court, Serena has been the target of scrutiny since the beginning, with conversations often having nothing to do with the sport itself.
But some of the most shocking and disgusting comments that have been uttered or typed about the multi-Grand Slam winner, were focused specifically on her body. For decades the media has always had a weird fascination with the shape, look, and size of Serena's body.
She appeared "different" compared to other athletes in the predominantly white sport, which made her and her sister prime targets for racism and microaggressions. Serena remembered being called the the n-word during the 2001 BNP Paribas Open in California, as the crowd booed Serena and her sister.
"When Venus and I were walking down the stairs to our seats, people kept calling me 'nigger,'" her father and coach Richard Williams later told journalists. One man, he said, threatened, "'I wish it was '75; we'd skin you alive.'"
The mom of two was (and, honestly, still is) constantly compared to an animal, while others called her aggressive and frightening. Her athletic build was deemed unattractive, unfeminine, and frequently likened to the physique of a man.
But despite the incessant body-shaming, Serena never let that get in the way of winning. She is now one of the most decorated tennis players in history, breaking records and barriers throughout her impressive career.
Serena announced her retirement in 2022, citing she was "evolving away" from the sport. In fact, she wanted to shy away from the word "retirement" and think of it more as an "evolution." She also mentioned a desire to expand her family.
Outside of raising two daughters — 7-year-old Olympia and 1-year-old Adira River — with her husband, Alexis Ohanian, Serena has her hands in many buckets, including running a venture capital firm, co-owning a WNBA team, and more. But even as she continues to expand her empire, somehow the focus always comes back to Serena's appearance.
On July 11, Serena shared a series of gym selfies after a workout. She playfully captioned the carousel, "Working out and working on my angles."
She showed off her chisled abs and toned arms as she posed in front of the mirror.
The photos caused a debate in the comments. Some, who couldn't look past her noticeable weight loss, voiced concern for Serena, while others accused her of using Ozempic and losing all her curves:
Others showered her with compliments, applauding her for her dedication and strength:
As more fans chimed in, they came to Serena's defense, stating that the focus should be on how happy she feels:
While some reminded others of the ramifications words can have, especially when you're an outsider placing judgment on someone you don't know personally. One person even used Chadwick Boseman's untimely death as an example, when the world didn't know he was sick, and jokes were being made about his dramatic weight loss.
You can check out Serena's full transformation below:
And for goodness' sake, can we just be kind? Every thought that crosses our mind, especially if it's a negative one, doesn't need to be shared publicly for other people to see.

Auction For Caitlin Clark Rookie Card Proves She's A Generational Talent

Auction For Caitlin Clark Rookie Card Proves She's A Generational Talent originally appeared on The Spun. Caitlin Clark doesn't need to be on the hardwood to send basketball fans into a frenzy Unfortunately, Clark has been sidelined since July 15 due to a groin injury. The Indiana Fever announced this week that there's no timetable for her return. It's possible her absence will linger for a whole since the team's priority is "her long-term health and well-being." On Thursday night, the Fever defeated the las Vegas Aces without Clark. They received strong performances from Kelsey Mitchell, Natasha Howard, Sophie Cunningham and Aliyah Boston. While the Fever were taking on the Aces on Thursday night, Fanatics held its Collect's July Premier Auction. There was a one-of-one Caitlin Clark card that received a few very generous bids. When the dust settled, a fan of the Iowa legend bid $660,00 on a 2024 Rookie Royalty WNBA Flawless Logowoman. That makes it the most expensive card of any female athlete. Just to put Clark's popularity and potential into perspective, the previous record for highest-selling women's sports card was $366,000. That was the final price for Clark's 2024 Panini Prizm WNBA Signatures Gold Vinyl Prizm card. From ESPN's report: Another Clark card, also from Panini's recent Rookie Royalty WNBA release, might challenge the newly set record. A 1-of-1 numbered, autographed Clark Logowoman currently sits at $219,600 (with buyer's premium) at Goldin Auctions and is due to enter extended bidding Aug. 9. Suffice to say, Clark is in a league of her own when it comes to popularity for women's athletes. Hopefully, we'll see the former No. 1 pick back on the hardwood For Caitlin Clark Rookie Card Proves She's A Generational Talent first appeared on The Spun on Jul 25, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Jul 25, 2025, where it first appeared.

Basketball Fans Celebrating Caitlin Clark For Incredible Gesture

Basketball Fans Celebrating Caitlin Clark For Incredible Gesture originally appeared on The Spun. Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark proved Friday that you don't need to be on the court to make an impact. Clark has been sidelined since July 15 due to a right groin strain. The Fever announced this week that there's no timetable for her return. They'll take a patient approach to this process, especially since they don't want to jeopardize the former No. 1 pick's long-term health. On Friday afternoon, the two-time WNBA All-Star took time out of her schedule to support IPS Northwest Middle School. Students received backpacks filled with school supplies and books courtesy of the Caitlin Clark Foundation. Clark's foundation wants to "uplift and improve the lives of youth and their communities through education, nutrition, and sports." We'd say she's accomplishing that goal. After Clark wrapped up her visit to IPS Northwest Middle School, fans praised her for being a true role model. "As an upcoming first year teacher this is just another reason why I love her. My students will know who she is," one fan commented. "My girl CC is amazing both on and off the court!!!!! Luv her so much," a second fan said. "Good Job Caitlin," another fan wrote. "Soo much respect for her. She is an amazing person," an Instagram user said. Earlier this year, the Caitlin Clark Foundation teamed up with Musco Lighting to provide new basketball courts at four middle schools in Des Moines, Iowa. "The Caitlin Clark Foundation is thrilled to be a partner in delivering these sport systems to the Des Moines schools and the greater community," a previous statement read. "Providing courts for local youth helps them find opportunities to play and connect with others. Sport activities provided by these courts help develop connections, foster teamwork, and improve communication. These are essential skills that complement the education journey and will have an impact beyond the court experience." Kudos to Clark for truly making an impact on the next Fans Celebrating Caitlin Clark For Incredible Gesture first appeared on The Spun on Jul 26, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Jul 26, 2025, where it first appeared.
