1 dead, 5 injured after earthquake rocks Peru's capital

Lima, June 16 (UNI) At least one person was killed and five others were injured Sunday after a 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck Peru's capital Lima, the National Emergency Operations Center (COEN) confirmed.
The earthquake took place at 11:35 a.m. local time (1635 GMT) at a depth of 49 km. Its epicenter was in the neighboring province of Callao.
Police identified the dead victim as a 36-year-old motorcycle taxi driver, who was struck by a structure that toppled from the fourth floor of the building while he was waiting for a passenger outside a home, reported private news network Radio Programas del Peru.
The Regional Emergency Operations Center (COER) in Lima immediately contacted all 43 districts in the capital, which reported moderate landslides on cliffs in the coastal area.
Meanwhile, the Economic Operations Committee of the Ministry of Energy and Mines reported power outages in the districts of Villa El Salvador, Ventanilla, Ancon and Pachacamac.
Peruvian President Dina Boluarte visited the COEN's headquarters in the Chorrillos district to assess the situation and called on the public to remain calm in the face of seismic events.
"In times of an earthquake, the first thing that must prevail is calm, taking shelter under doorways, away from glass because it can shatter," the president said.

Opposition YSRCP alleges ex-MLA Chevireddy framed in liquor case

Vijayawada, June 17 (UNI) YSRCP leader Chevireddy Mohith Reddy strongly condemned the TDP-led coalition government for plotting to falsely implicate former government whip Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy in the so-called liquor scam. Speaking at the party central office at Tadepalli near here on Tuesday, he alleged that SIT officials were using coercion and police force to extract false statements from former gunmen of Bhaskar Reddy. Mohith Reddy revealed that SIT officers had summoned former gunmen, including Giri and head constable Madan Reddy, and subjected them to physical torture when they refused to provide fabricated statements. He said Madan Reddy was beaten so severely that he had to be hospitalized and is currently under treatment. Photos of the injured constable were shown during the press meet. The YSRCP leader questioned whether refusing to lie against Bhaskar Reddy was a crime and condemned the SIT's brutal treatment. Mohith Reddy stated that Madan Reddy has filed a petition in the High Court seeking protection from further harassment, which clearly shows how law enforcement is being misused. The YSRCP leader warned the government that using police as pawns to frame YSRCP leaders would not go unchallenged. He also cautioned police officers that unlawful actions will make them answerable before the court. UNI DP PRS
