Movie Review: Rebel Wilson's 'Bride Hard' is a wedding movie that's easy to break up with
Take your average wedding flick, shotgun a hostage situation into it and add some anarchic energy from Rebel Wilson and you get 'Bride Hard,' which is a movie, for better or for worse. In this case, much, much worse.
'Bride Hard' — which combines thrusting male strippers dressed as Vikings as well as deadly automatic weapon fire — isn't funny or thrilling. It has the kind of lazy pacing you'd usually find on the Hallmark Channel and a level of acting not much better than porn.
Director Simon West, whose action movie credits include 'Con Air' and 'Lara Croft: Tomb Raider,' seems to be making a parody until he's not. The whole thing stinks of an '80s low-budget movie that you might find, back in the day, rummaging through a discount bin at Blockbuster.
Wilson stars as Sam, a secret government 'Mission Impossible'-type agent who is a loose cannon, lethal with an elbow and as creative as MacGyver, but poor at managing her personal life.
'I will give you all of your flowers on the job, but in your real life, you're kind of dumb,' says her agent friend, played by Sherry Cola, who like everyone here, has been shorn of saying anything amusing. Even the blooper reel at the end of the movie is underwhelming.
We start when Sam is reunited with her childhood best friend, bride-to-be Betsy — Wilson's 'Pitch Perfect' co-star Anna Camp — for a bachelorette party in Paris, which goes disastrously bad since Sam is also hunting for a bioweapon at the time.
The action then shifts to a mansion on a private island in Savannah, Georgia, the site of a lavish wedding and lots of daytime drinking. That is, until heavily armed goons arrive to steal a pallet of gold bars. (Gold bars, like it's a Looney Tunes cartoon.) It's up to Sam to save the day and prove she's a good friend.
Screenwriters Cece Pleasants and Shaina Steinberg seem to be mocking spy thrillers and wedding movies alike until they also kind of stop. There's lots of real blood, fiery explosions, impalings and electrocutions, along with irritable bowel syndrome jokes and plenty of kicks to the groin.
Sample dialogue: 'Oh, Sam, you're alone,' the mother of the bride says as she approaches Sam. 'Well, no. I have my emotional support boobs,' Sam responds. There's also needless scene-explaining, like one bad guy yelling, 'She's using the chocolate fountains as cover!' Yeah, we see that.
Have the screenwriters been reading the room? Not clear. 'If anybody ever mentions that I'm a secret agent, we will rendition you to one of our many unnamed bases,' warns Sam, as her spy colleague does a throat-slitting gesture. Rendition jokes are really so funny this summer.
To be fair, there are some intriguing wedding-themed assaults, like the use of hairspray in the eyes, curling iron burns and a bad guy's chest punctured on an hors d'oeuvres platter. Sam likes to wield champagne bottles as clubs.
One of the most cringe moments is when a stressed-out pregnant bridesmaid requests another sing the nasty, freaky 'My Neck, My Back (Lick It)' to her unborn baby, which triggers a sing-a-long with all the captives, mostly white, rich and middle aged. But even here it's neutered: The moviemakers go with the radio edit.
The movie co-stars Stephen Dorff as the main bad guy, Justin Hartley as eye candy with a secret, Anna Chlumsky as a high-strung maid of honor and Da'Vine Joy Randolph as an edgy, sassy bridesmaid. They all need to break up with their agents. (So does whoever did the stunts — the body doubles are embarrassing.)
'Bride Hard' hits an insane low in a battle sequence in which the bridesmaids — all in fluffy red gowns — use Revolutionary-era cannons to take on trained mercenaries in tactical gear with rocket-propelled grenades. That, of course, leads to plenty of jokes about 'ramming it in.'
If you do decide to pony up real cash to see this historic misfire in the movie theaters instead of waiting until you can hate-watch it for free on a streaming service, we have a word of advice: Bring your emotional support boobs.
'Bride Hard,' a Magenta Light Studios release in theaters Friday, is rated R for 'sexual references and some violence.' Running time: 105 minutes. Zero stars out of four.

It's been a roller-coaster of emotions for Good Omens fans since that heartbreaking season two finale. News that the Prime Video adaptation would get a third and final season came in December 2023; the following year, production was reportedly paused amid the allegations against showrunner and source material co-author Neil Gaiman. Then, fans learned Gaiman was reportedly pulling back from Good Omens season three—followed by the announcement in October 2024 that season three was going to be a 90-minute special instead of a full slate of episodes. However, a recent interview with star Michael Sheen, who plays the angelic Aziraphale opposite David Tennant's demonic Crowley, has sown some doubt that the special may ever see the light of day. Speaking to the Times (via Collider), Sheen was asked about Good Omens in a way that framed its 'potential return,' a worrisome way of referring to what fans had assumed was a done deal. 'I really don't know what's going to happen with it,' Sheen said of the finale. He also implied that production was completed on it, and made mention of the Gaiman situation that's unfortunately become part of the show's external narrative: '[Tennant and I] were both relieved we finished the story, but that's within this really difficult, complicated, disturbing context. I hope people get to see it, but that, to a large extent, is out of our hands.' A source familiar with the matter told io9 that the series finale is still moving forward. Though we're still waiting on an official announcement, we're crossing our fingers we'll get to see how Aziraphale and Crowley's 'ineffable' relationship plays out. It may be the most extravagant wedding of the year, but not everyone is looking forward to Lauren Sánchez and Jeff Bezos' upcoming nuptials in Venice, Italy. Last week, Venetians gathered together to protest the couple's upcoming wedding festivities over fears of disruptions in a city that is already impacted by mass tourism. "No space for Bezos," one sign read. Though most of the details surrounding the wedding are unknown, one Venice citizen said, "we have our moles," per The New York Times. Federica Toninello, a protest organizer, said that one of the venues could be The Misericordia, a famed event hall. "Bezos will never get to the Misericordia," she said during a protest. "We will line the streets with our bodies, block the canals with lifesavers, dinghies and our boats." "We have to block Bezos, we have to block this idea of this city as a tourist haven that has driven up housing costs so that most ordinary Venetians can no longer afford to live here," she said, according to the NYT. Despite the backlash, Mayor Luigi Brugnaro told the Associated Press that the city is "very proud." "We are very proud,'' Brugnaro said. "I don't know if I will have time [to meet Bezos and Sánchez], or if he will, to meet and shake hands, but it's an honor that they chose Venice. Venice once again reveals itself to be a global stage.'' According to NBC, Venice - home to about 50,000 people - receives around 20 million visitors yearly, mostly day-trippers from cruise ships or other cities. Officials told NBC that about 30 of the 280 water taxis have been reserved for the wedding festivities, and only three or four hotels will be used for the event. "The city is fully accustomed to hosting high-profile events of this nature and scale, including other celebrity weddings, international summits such as the G7 and G20, as well as traditional events like the Festa del Redentore and the Venice Biennale," city hall officials said in a statement to NBC. "The celebrations, attended by 250 guests, will blend into the daily rhythm of a city that, with dignity and respect, welcomes thousands of visitors from around the world while safeguarding the quality of life for its residents, workers, and students." "Protest initiatives are in no way representative of the majority of citizens, who are proud that Venice has been chosen as the wedding location," the statement added. According to the AP, Bezos and Sánchez are sourcing 80% of their wedding vendors locally. In March, the city reassured locals that the wedding would not disturb the day-to-day of its citizens. "We are mutually working and supporting the organizers, to ensure that the event will be absolutely respectful of the fragility and uniqueness of the city," Mayor Brugnaro said in a statement to People at the time. "The many speculations and fake news circulating about Jeff Bezos' wedding are completely unfounded," the city added in a statement, noting that it "is their utmost priority to make sure the city functions as normal, for all, with no abnormal disruption to anyone." The Bezos-Sánchez wedding is reportedly being held later this month. There is expected to be a star-studded guest list, with friends of the couple making appearances. Leonardo DiCaprio, Orlando Bloom, Ivanka Trump and Oprah Winfrey are said to be attending, per Page Six. Bezos and Sánchez reportedly met in the mid-2010s but didn't go public with their relationship until 2019 – once Sanchez separated from her then-husband, Hollywood agent Patrick Whitesell, and Bezos divorced Mackenzie Scott. If you're traveling to Paris in the near future, there is some bad news and some good news. The bad news: you likely won't be able to see the Mona Lisa or any of the masterpieces hanging inside the Louvre, because it's currently shut down. The good news: You'll get to see a strong labor movement at work. On Monday, staff at the world's most-visited museum went on strike, forcing the museum to close its doors over concerns about the effects of mass tourism, according to the Associated Press. The shutdown followed a weekend of protests against tourism that spread across Europe. In Spain, travelers hanging out at popular tourist destinations were drenched by demonstrators armed with water guns. Mass demonstrations also broke out in Mallorca, Venice, Italy, and Portugal's capital of Lisbon, per the AP, with locals leading chants like 'Everywhere you look, all you see are tourists.' The objection the residents have to the visitors is primarily their role in causing an affordability crisis, leading to things like housing costs skyrocketing as homes are sought after to be listed on Airbnb and other short-term rental markets. Overcrowding issues have plagued other hot spots across Europe, which are increasingly dominated by folks looking for a picturesque view, perhaps not realizing that their very presence is eroding the beauty. German publications Deutsche Welle recently highlighted how destinations popularized on social media like Instagram and TikTok have become overrun by visitors, pushing out locals and making the beautiful sights and sounds less accessible to others. In the wake of that growing movement, workers at the Louvre reportedly spontaneously decided to walk out during a standard staff meeting on Monday, per the AP. Gallery attendants, ticket takers, and security all refused to operate their posts, complaining that the crowds have become unmanageable and the museum is understaffed. According to a report from The Guardian, the Louvre sees about nine million people pass through its doors every year, and about 20,000 people per day stop to see the Mona Lisa. That foot traffic has gotten so untenable that it was announced earlier this year that the Louvre would be redesigned to give Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece a room of its own to help mitigate the impact of so many people wanting to stop and take a picture of the painting. A common refrain from people visiting the painting is that the experience is underwhelming because of how quickly you're ushered through the room with hundreds of others. 'You don't see a painting,' Ji-Hyun Park, a traveler from Seoul, South Korea, told the Associated Press. 'You see phones. You see elbows. You feel heat. And then, you're pushed out.' The painting's popularity has long been an issue for the museum, to the point that it has been suggested that the painting be taken down or moved. But with no standalone room ready yet, the painting still hangs in the museum. And with staff saying they simply aren't dealing with it, thousands of tourists with tickets in hand got left hanging on Monday, unable to see anything inside the glass pyramid. It's unclear when the museum will return to full staff and functionality, which will still leave the actual workers overwhelmed, but will get the tourism bucks flowing again.
