In a virtual fireside chat on the occasion of ET World MSME Day on June 27, 2025, Girija Subramanian, Chairman and Managing Director of The New India Assurance Co. Ltd. (NIA), spoke about her company's critical role in protecting India's micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). As economic volatility, climate change, and digital transformation reshape the business landscape, NIA is responding with inclusive, tech-forward insurance solutions to ensure that MSMEs thrive.
Addressing climate risk with parametric insurance
One of the most pressing concerns for MSMEs today is climate risk. From floods and landslides to heatwaves and hail, unpredictable weather phenomena are impacting operations across industries. Subramanian shared that NIA has taken bold steps to address this by launching innovative products such as Nishchit Suraksha. Nishchit Suraksha offers immediate payouts based on pre-defined triggers, namely, rainfall thresholds and such as temperature spikes, without the need for traditional loss assessments.
'Unlike traditional insurance, parametric cover offers instant cash flows,' she explained. 'When a trigger is breached, a payout is made, often within hours or days. This ensures seamless business continuity and better financial resilience.'
This speed and efficiency makes such products especially appealing to MSMEs that lack deep cash reserves and need quick recovery to stay afloat.

She highlighted the growing shift towards AI-driven credit rules and the increasing adoption of digital lending as key trends shaping the future of MSME financing. However, she also pointed out a critical gap — the lack of awareness among MSMEs about specific insurance programs that can help them mitigate risks effectively. While the government has introduced several supportive schemes and policy reforms for MSMEs, Girija emphasized the need for greater outreach and education to ensure these benefits reach grassroots businesses.
Bridging credit and insurance with embedded cover

Indian MSMEs are increasingly tapping into digital lending and AI-driven credit tools. In this context, New India Assurance is eyeing partnerships with credit guarantee platforms and fintechs to offer embedded insurance. It is also exploring collaborations that bundle insurance with working capital loans.
These kinds of embedded coverage, whether for liability, property, etc, ensures that MSMEs are not just financed, but protected. 'Insurance significantly reduces the risk of credit default,' Subramanian said. 'If a covered event occurs, the payout ensures business continuity and protects loan exposure.'
Tackling trust and awareness deficits
Subramanian acknowledged that lack of trust and awareness about numerous insurance offerings remain key hurdles for Indian MSMEs. Micro units in particular operate with limited capital and are wary of spending on insurance. It doesn't help that insurance policies for businesses are also traditionally difficult to understand.
To address this, NIA has introduced customer information sheets, simplified policy language, and targeted awareness drives particularly in Gujarat, where it is the designated state insurer.
'Trust comes when customers see that claims are paid quickly and without hassles,' Subramanian stated, emphasising the role of transparency and word-of-mouth in building credibility.
Segment-specific solutions
NIA is also tailoring products for different sub-segments within the MSME ecosystem, such as medium enterprises. For instance, Mahila Udyam Bima offers targeted protection for women entrepreneurs. Such products are distributed through retail agents and partner networks, with the insurer actively participating in industry and government workshops to reach the last mile.
'The MSME sector contributes over 40% of India's exports and GDP. It's imperative that we create tailored underwriting models and products that match their risk profiles and scale,' Subramanian underlined.
2025 as NIA's 'Year of SME'
In line with the national focus on MSMEs and the need to increase insurance penetration (which has stagnated at around 1% for years), NIA declared 2025 as its 'Year of SME'.
Subramanian revealed that the company has mandated all business units to prioritise MSME clients, especially those who've never been insured before. 'It's time we look beyond the already-insured pie and focus on businesses that have stayed outside the insurance umbrella,' she said.

Countering the Opposition's charge of high unemployment, Modi also said the PM Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana being launched on Independence Day will facilitate the creation of 35 million jobs. The announcement comes close on the heels of parliamentary approval for two key items of legislation — the Income Tax (No 2) Bill and the Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill — earlier this week. The PM said the policy changes will reduce compliance costs, besides boosting startups and small and cottage industries. Other benefits will include a smoother export process, improved logistics and systems, and the abolition of archaic laws that led to imprisonment for minor matters. Modi urged all sections, including political parties, his rivals and fellow leaders, to take part in the efforts to build a bright future. 'I wish to tell my countrymen, everything I am doing, I am doing for the country, not for myself, not to harm anyone,' he said. 'Whether it is structural reforms, regulatory, policy or process reforms, or the need for constitutional reforms, we have made every kind of reform our mission today.' Atmanirbhar Bharat is the bedrock on which Viksit Bharat will be built, he said. The Prime Minister asserted that Operation Sindoor, the Gaganyaan mission and the manufacture of indigenous semiconductors has proved the power of self-reliance. 'The greater a nation's reliance on others, the more its freedom comes into question,' he said. 'Misfortune arises when dependency becomes a habit, when we do not even realise it, when we abandon self-reliance and become dependent on others. This habit is fraught with danger and hence, one must remain vigilant every moment to be self-reliant.' Made in India weapons and defence systems helped India during Operation Sindoor, he asserted. 'The enemy had no inkling of what weapons and capabilities we possessed, what power was destroying them in the blink of an eye,' he said. 'Imagine if we were not self-reliant, could we have executed Operation Sindoor with such swiftness? We would have been plagued by worries over who might supply us, whether we would get the required equipment, and so on.' Modi also announced the Sudarshan Chakra Mission for creating a complete security cover for all civilian installations in the near future. Since the 21st century is a 'technology-driven century,' it is imperative that India does not lag behind, the PM said, adding that every nation that mastered technology scaled the heights of development and attained new dimensions of economic power. He lamented that although India began the process of building infrastructure for semiconductor manufacturing six decades ago, the plan was stalled, delayed and shelved, while other countries mastered the technology and strengthened their position. 'Today, we have freed ourselves from that burden and advanced the work on semiconductors in mission mode,' Modi said. 'Six different semiconductor units are taking shape on the ground, and we have already given the green signal to four new units.' India is becoming self-reliant in space technology as well, he stated. 'We are also preparing for Atmanirbhar Bharat Gaganyaan on our own in space,' the Prime Minister said. 'We are working towards building our own space station. And I am very proud of the reforms done in space recently. More than 300 startups in my country are now working only in the space sector and thousands of youth are working with full potential in those 300 startups.' He also expressed satisfaction at the pace with which the National Manufacturing Mission was progressing and reiterated the importance of the 'vocal for local,' 'zero defect, zero effect' and 'lower price, higher value' themes. Underlining the need for promoting indigenous products, Modi urged all traders and shopkeepers to put up boards, saying 'Swadeshi goods sold here.' 'Today, on August 15th, we are launching and implementing a scheme worth Rs 1 lakh crore for the youth of my country,' he said. 'The Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana is being implemented today… Under this scheme, the government will give Rs 15,000 to the youth, to every son or daughter who gets a job in the private sector.' The new jobs programme is expected to create new employment opportunities for approximately 35 million youth. Companies that generate more jobs will also be given incentives under the scheme. FMCG bigwigs turn to D2C lifeline as inflation bites

Kolkata: Leading consumer goods manufacturers are ramping up their direct-to-consumer (D2C) business through acquisitions and new launches to counter subdued demand and intensifying competition, buoyed by 20-25% growth of their digital-first brands . The rationale for this strategic shift is clear. While FMCG firms have struggled amid high inflation and sluggish consumer income for the past 9-10 quarters, D2C segment has been booming, powered by rise of social commerce among tech-savvy consumers and influencer-driven marketing. Hindustan Unilever's CFO Ritesh Tiwari said its digital first brands in the beauty and wellness segment is a ₹3,000-crore portfolio, growing at over 25% a year. The country's top FMCG company told analysts its digital-first strategy will target high-income consumers. It will have 'four levers' - acquisitions like it did of OZiva and Minimalist, build a new brand like Novology, launch a global Unilever brand like Simple or Love, Beauty & Planet, and extend one or more of its core brands. Dabur's CEO Mohit Malhotra said the company is exploring acquisitions of new-age brands in wellness, food and health to plug gaps in the portfolio. He said Dabur is eyeing premium D2C brands so that margin is accretive to its base business. Live Events Expanding Portfolio These moves come amid sluggish urban demand. The rural market has outpaced urban areas for six consecutive quarters now, indicating a turnaround in consumption in smaller towns and villages. In the April-June quarter, rural FMCG growth reached 8.4% in volume as compared to 4.6% increase in urban areas, as per NielsenIQ data. According to the market researcher, ecommerce is emerging as a key growth engine in urban areas, especially in the top eight metro. Southern metros are leading the ecommerce charge, with a higher share at 18.4%, compared to 15.8% in eight metros in the June quarter. Even though ecommerce accounts for just 11–13% of FMCG value share in metros, it's delivering more than half of the omnichannel growth, as per NielsenIQ. Chief executives also acknowledged the stiff competition from D2C brands in categories like wellness food and health, male grooming, beauty and hair care, which has forced traditional players to rework on their portfolio. Emami vice chairman Mohan Goenka said there is a lot of D2C competition in categories like male grooming and hair care. The company has relaunched its male grooming portfolio under a new brand, Smart and Handsome from its earlier avatar of Fair and Handsome, while its hair care portfolio Kesh King is also being relaunched this quarter. Marico chief executive officer Saugata Gupta said the company is exploring digital-first brands in spaces like foods and personal care, with the company's D2C brands growing at over 25%. He said some of the earlier D2C acquisitions such as Beardo and Plix have broken even, while Just Herbs and True Elements brands will get to the path of break even within the next 18 months. 'Our track-record for acquisition has been good. We now have a good playbook,' Gupta said. 'We also believe that we see ourselves as a strategic investor of choice, because given that we have multiple brands, the kind of synergies, and the kind of cost and the kind of knowledge we can give and help a founder to grow his or her business is significant.'
