Lepront, Van Greunen triumph in Rip Curl Cup

The Herald22-04-2025
Luc Lepront and Tasha van Greunen were crowned the Rip Curl Cup champions in Port Alfred on Monday, both banking R22,000 for their first places.
The contest, presented by The Royal St Andrews Hotel, featured many of the country's top surfers, a selection of young crew members and a few old-guard surfers.
In the women's final, Cape Town's Van Greunen was in fine form.
She surfed only three waves in the final, but two were good enough to put her in the lead.
Anastasia Venter showed flashes of brilliance during the weekend of surfing, but couldn't do enough to snatch victory from Van Greunen, who was a stoked winner.
Louise Lepront was third, with Remi Fourie fourth.
'I wasn't really sure what the score of the other girls was, but I knew that I had two good waves under the belt,' Van Greunen said.
'I just kept it steady and held onto the lead.
'I will use the money to put it back into my surfing and get to the next couple of events in SA.
The men's final was an insane display of competitive surfing by Luc Lepront from Scottburgh.
Lepront smashed two Port Alfred walls, back-to-back with a series of searing backhand turns, to put two scores well into the excellent range on the board.
An 8.5 and a 9.33, with a heat total of 17.83.
Within the first five minutes of the heat, he put all the other finalists into combination situations.
The rest of the finalists, Matt Canning, Luke Slijpen and Luke Thompson, were left chasing, but with minutes ticking away, they were all still in combination situations, needing two new waves apiece.
Slijpen was looking stronger, with a 7.17 score and a 6.50 backup, but it wasn't enough to get out of the combination situation.
As the clock ticked out, it was Luc in front, with Slijpen second, Canning third and a disappointed Thompson in fourth.
'The heat couldn't have panned out any better,' a stoked Lepront said.
'I got on the first one, and then I got another absolute bomb, my personal best two waves of the contest.
'I was patient on the first one, and I knew it would get bigger down the line, so I held back for a bit on it.
'I didn't get my timing right in my previous heats, but I got it right at the end, in the final.
The prize money is going straight towards my trip to Hawaii!'
Final results:
Men: 1 Luc Lepront R22,000, 2 Luke Slijpen R10,000, 3 Matt Canning R5,000, 4 Luke Thompson R2,500
Women: 1 Natasha Van Greunen R22,000, 2 Anastasia Venter R10,000, 3 L ouise Lepront R5,000, 4 Remi Fourie R2,500 — Surfing SA

SPAR Women's Challenge Tshwane: A Celebration of Purpose, Empowerment and Giving Back

While the streets around SuperSport Park in Centurion echoed with the joy and strength of 17,000 women participating in the sold-out SPAR Women's Challenge Tshwane this past weekend, the true heartbeat of the event was the incredible impact made far beyond the finish line. Hosted in Women's Month, the 2025 edition of the SPAR Women's Challenge Tshwane once again proved that this iconic event is about so much more than a race. It is a rallying cry for community, empowerment, and giving back. As part of the My SPAR My Community campaign, over R350,000 was donated to organisations doing vital work to support and uplift women across the region. These include charities focused on early childhood development, educational support, the fight against Gender-Based Violence, and burn victim care at the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital. 'At SPAR, we believe that when women thrive, communities thrive. This event is a celebration of our most loyal customers, but also a strategic and heartfelt platform to invest back into their lives and futures,' said Ralph Rajagopaul, Divisional Marketing Director – SPAR North Rand & Botswana just before the race on Saturday. A significant highlight of this year's event was the ongoing SPAR End Period Poverty campaign, aimed at eradicating period poverty by 2030. Thanks to the sanitary pad donation drive and the support of thousands of participants, 4,000 girls will now be able to stay in school for another month, removing a critical barrier to education. 'Empowerment starts with dignity. By tackling challenges like period poverty and supporting GBV prevention programmes, we are making bold strides toward a future where every girl has the opportunity to thrive,' Mpudi Maubane, National PR, Communications & Sponsorships Manager at SPAR South Africa remarked. The day was also filled with moments of joy and celebration. In a highlight that had the entire stadium cheering, one lucky participant won a brand-new Hyundai Exter worth R269000, adding even more excitement to an already memorable event. The top three finishers of the 10km 2025 @SPARWomensPta which took place at @SuperSportPark on Saturday are from left second placed Ethiopian Diniya Abaraya (Nedbank), winner #GlenroseXaba (Boxer) and Ethiopian Selam Gebre (Nedbank) who finished third.#Twenty20thrive — SPAR Grand Prix (@SPARGrandPrix) August 3, 2025 Elite athletes were also recognised for their incredible talent, with Glenrose Xaba taking top honours in the 10km race and walking away with R43000 in prize money. In total, R195500 in prize money was awarded – all to women – underlining SPAR's commitment to creating tangible opportunities for female athletes to succeed. The SPAR Women's Challenge Tshwane continues to be more than a race – it is a movement. One that celebrates resilience, honours womanhood, and builds a better, more equitable future for all. Cadillac will add value as 11th F1 team, says McLaren boss Brown

Cadillac's arrival in Formula One next year as an 11th team will bring added financial value with new partners and more fan engagement rather than diluting resources, according to McLaren's American CEO Zak Brown. The General Motors-backed team have taken staff from rival outfits, their European headquarters at Silverstone being close to other factories, and are competing for sponsorship. However, Brown, whose team are dominating this year's championship after winning the 2024 constructors' title, saw no reason to fear a dilution of resources. "I think on employees they are definitely going to take a lot more than they give, which is fine," he said at last weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix. "My general view is if someone wants to work for a rival team then shame on me. "For sponsors, I think they'll bring more new to the table than take." Brown expected Cadillac to bring more competition eventually, though they faced a tough challenge as newcomers, and more fans to a series that has three US rounds and a growing audience in America. "Will we get a better US TV deal, more American presence? I think their sponsors and Cadillac will spend money in the sport and the teams get a percentage of that so I see them as a value add to the sport," he added. "I'm not worried about some of the short term-ness of they are going to take an employee here or there or poach a sponsor here or there. I think the contribution will be bigger than that." Cadillac secured approval of their bid in March after a 764-day entry process and initial opposition from Formula One and the other 10 teams wary of a potential reduction in the share of revenues. The team are also backed by TWG Global, whose CEO Mark Walter has an estimated net worth of $12.5bn (R223,340,000,000), according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The first new team since US-owned Haas debuted in 2016 said in July they were two thirds of the way towards a targeted headcount of 600 by next season and no longer the smallest outfit.

Orlando Pirates FIVE fixtures for August: Can they collect 15 points?

Orlando Pirates will play their second match of the season following their impressive 2-0 win over Polokwane City on Saturday in the MTN8 quarter-finals. With a win under their belt, the Buccaneers will switch their attention to the Betway Premiership this weekend. They host Sekhukhune United at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday at 17:30. Having lost out to Mamelodi Sundowns last year, Pirates will hope to once again challenge Masandawana in the league. The two teams will face each other in the semi-finals of the MTN8 over two legs in the coming weeks. On Saturday, the Sea Robbers host Sekhukhune before travelling to Bloemfontein to play Marumo Gallants in their second league fixture. Eight days later, the Buccaneers will face arguably one of the league's toughest teams in Stellenbosch FC. Abdeslam Ouaddou's men look to avenge their loss that happened late in 2024, which ultimately saw their title charge derailed. After hosting Stellies, Orlando Pirates will have another home match against newboys Orbit College on 26 August before travelling to Qqeberha to play Chippa United on 31 August. Out of the five fixtures, Pirates play three of them at Orlando Stadium and nothing but three points should satisfy Ouaddou. The Marumo Gallants' match away could be tricky and if Orlando Pirates slip up, they could find themselves once again chasing the league. The away fixture against Chippa is winnable when you look at Ouaddou's squad. Expect the Buccaneers to heavily rotate their players especially with CAF Champions League fixtures coming up.
