One of Alexandria's Oldest Restaurants Gets a Facelift

A 100-year-old Alexandria stalwart has been transformed into a swanky all-day spot, after decades of serving breakfast buffets for diners in classic red booths. It comes courtesy of Alexandria Restaurant Partners (ARP), who have announced the updates across The Royal Restaurant's building with a new floral mural by artist Amuse126. The restaurant that's been here since 1964, and dates back to 1904, has a brand new brunch and dinner menu to mark the finishing touches of the remodel. 'We've focused on reimagining The Royal, paying homage to the many years of history there, and just bringing it up to 2025, so to speak,' says Dave Nicholas, ARP managing partner. It's a transformation years in the making. After the death of The Royal's longtime owner, Charlie Euripides, in 2022, the team behind the family-owned restaurant and ARP engaged in talks about the restaurant group taking over. The ARP team has been managing a fleet of Alexandria restaurants, like The Majestic, Mia's Italian Kitchen, Barca Pier and Wine Bar, and more, for about a decade. 'I said to them for almost 18 months, 'if you'll sell us the real estate, then we're interested,'' Nicholas tells Eater. Since sealing the deal in 2023, ARP has been working to give the building a gut renovation down to the studs and completely reinvent the menu with a roster of modern American dishes. The restaurant reopened in April 2024 after closing for three months and has been slowly updating the brunch menu and workshopping a new dinner menu as the last details of the redesign (like the floral mural) fell into place. The Royal's update involves trading out an old-school breakfast buffet for the likes of acai bowls and swapping a parking lot (a rarity in Old Town) for an 80-seat patio. Also new: dinner and cocktails. The Royal offers dinner for the first time in 30 years, and the building's renovations created the opportunity to add a bar. The drinks program also spans a 'boozy brunch' which ARP felt was missing in the rapidly-developing North Old Town neighborhood. Nicholas and corporate operations chef Santiago Lopez went on a North American food tour from New York City to Texas and Florida to gain inspiration for The Royal's menu of American staples, hitting up to 10 restaurants a day on their trip. 'I think our focus here has been hyper-seasonal, fresh, vibrant food,' Lopez says. For example, mushroom ravioli is dressed up with a dried porcini mushroom crema, stuffed with a mushroom mix, and accented with maitake mushrooms that have been marinated and grilled. A classic cheeseburger includes house-cured bacon flavored with maple syrup, while international influences include deviled eggs topped with roasted corn and tajin or a dinner dish of char siu pork with fried rice. Brunch includes staples like steak and eggs and blueberry pancakes, options like cinnamon-molasses butter-topped oatmeal pancakes and avocado toast with marinated burrata, plus decadent dishes like bananas foster French toast, or chicken and waffles with chorizo gravy. On the 80-seat patio, diners will find a very 2025 innovation with seasonal decor designed by artist Naii Vegas of Creative Buildr, who created a floral arch that's begging for social media selfies. In the dining room, there's room for 100 diners, including a small private room with 20 seats. The decor plays up Alexandria's history as well, with newspaper-inspired wallpaper and touches of Americana nostalgia. Sign up for our newsletter.

Bhumi Pednekar shuts down trolling targeting her lips amidst 'The Royal' backlash: 'People are paying lakhs...'

Bhumi Pednekar shuts down trolling targeting her lips amidst 'The Royal' backlash: 'People are paying lakhs...' Netflix's latest romantic dramedy, The Royals, has been creating a stir since its release. The show portrays its fresh take on love, royalty, and self-discovery. Set against the picturesque backdrop of Morpur, the eight-episode series has intrigued viewers with its quirky blend of romance and royal nostalgia. While the Netflix show quickly grabbed eyeballs, it has been receiving mixed reviews. From its vibrant aesthetics and Ishan Khattar's strong screen presence, especially his shirtless scenes which is being considered the main plot/heartbeat of the show, many are talking about Ishaan's fit look. On the other hand, Bhumi Pednekar, who is playing the lead opposite Ishaan, has found herself at the centre of social media scrutiny, not for her performance, but for her appearance, especially her lips. Amidst the ongoing chatter, a 2017 interview clip of Bhumi resurfaced online, where she had firmly responded to similar remarks about her looks. Addressing the comments about her lips being 'too big,' Bhumi had confidently stated, 'You know, the most strange thing somebody told me was that your lips are too big. I said—since when is that a problem? People are paying lakhs to get that done. They can say the most bizarre things. You should just be aware of who you are and not care.' The Royals follows the journey of Aviraaj and Sophia, portrayed by Ishaan Khatter and Bhumi Pednekar, as they come together to restore a decaying royal haveli into a luxurious boutique homestay. What begins as a business venture gradually blossoms into a tale of flirtation, conflict, and emotional growth. The series wraps up with loose threads tied neatly, leaving viewers hoping for a second season. The show boasts a star-studded ensemble with veterans and familiar faces like Zeenat Aman, Chunky Panday, Sakshi Tanwar, Milind Soman, Nora Fatehi, and Dino Morea. Directed by Priyanka Ghose and Nupur Asthana, and penned by Neha Veena Sharma, The Royals is produced by Pritish Nandy Communications and has been applauded for blending heritage with modern storytelling. Despite the polarising reviews, The Royals has made its mark. And Bhumi Pednekar, as always, continues to silence trolls with grace and authenticity, on and off screen.

EXCLUSIVE! Lisa Mishra on Ishaan Khatter and Bhumi Pednekar starrer Netflix ‘The Royals': ‘I am loving the way women solidarity is shown in cinema…'

In an exclusive interview with Firstpost's Lachmi Deb Roy, Lisa Mishra talks about Netflix's The Royals, playing a person from the LGBTQ community and more. read more Singer-turned-actress Lisa Mishra talks about working in Ishaan Khatter and Bhumi Pednekar starrer The Royals, how she treated her love story like any other love story, playing a person from the LGBTQ community and rise of sisterhood in cinema where women are trying to fix each other's crown. Edited excerpts from the interview: How did you prepare yourself for playing a person from the LGBTQ community in The Royals ? I approached my character like a love story and didn't worry so much about how to deliver the LGBTQ aspect of it because that could easily become a caricature. It was just treated with dignity and that is where the authenticity lies and we all fall in love the same way. I had the easier job because I play the character that is already out. I didn't have to think about the backstory of my coming out until Jinny (my partner in the show) sort of starts questioning herself. I have many friends who are from the LGBTQ community, hence that helped me play the role in such a way that it doesn't come out as a mockery or a mimicry of them. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD You were there in Call Me Bae… so how do you make the shift from one character to another because in The Royal your role is very different as compared to Bae? Both my characters in both shows are very similar because they are in corporate spaces. I was lucky to carry a little bit of Harleen from Call Me Bae into my character as Nikki in The Royals because both the characters are empowered and confident women in workspaces. I brought that out in my latest show in The Royals. There is a little commonality in who champions each other. Here I had the liberty to be a little bit more comedic unlike Call Me Bae because here I don't play the boss. Women solidarity or sisterhood is being shown in a big way in all the movies, what do you have to say about that? I am loving the way women's solidarity is now being shown in movies and series because, for a long time, we have seen women competing for male attention. I am happy to see solid female friendship being brought into Indian cinema. I want to see more of this in movies where women support each other rather than trying to put down each other. The more we see this on screen the better it is. There are enough seats at the table. There are plenty of rooms for all women. Acting to me now is definitely more challenging. I am confident with music because I have done it since I was four-years-old. It's like breathing for me; I don't have to think twice as a musician nowadays. But in the case of acting, I have a long way to go and keep learning from the people who I work with. I need to attend workshops too. Acting is tougher now, but I believe the more I do it, the journey will get easier. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

See photos as emerging bands rock out at The Royal for Arklow music showcase

Dubbed 'Live At The Royal', the over 14s event saw gifted up-and-coming performers The Spudguns, Fear Gorta, HeadRoom and Josie Kavanagh rock a sell-out audience, with a broad mix of ages in attendance to support the local talent. Born out of a conversation initiated by Cllr Peir Leonard and local musician Trevor O'Sullivan at a 'Making Arklow' meeting on the role of music in the seaside town, the event, which was sponsored by Music Generation Wicklow, Making Arklow and The Royal, was part of a series aimed at encouraging and shaping the future of Arklow's musical landscape. 'It was a fantastic event with a really great turnout, so we're going to have to look at doing another one,' Cllr Leonard joked. 'There was a huge mix of ages, and some people came down from as far as Greystones and Dublin to see the acts. 'The event was all about creating a safe space for young people to go, and it really couldn't have gone any better, with a brilliant atmosphere, great music and lots of dancing. 'A big thank you to Music Generation, The Royal, our sound technician Fergal Canterbury, and especially to Trevor O'Sullivan, who put in a huge amount of work organising and coordinating the bands.'
