Why a VC is betting AI is 'the opposite of social media' and will forge more human connections
Connection is one of a handful of "white space opportunities" that Menlo Ventures is eyeing as fertile ground for new startups in consumer AI technology, according to the firm's recent "The State of Consumer AI" report.
Menlo Ventures and Morning Consult surveyed roughly 5,000 US-based adults in April about their feelings around AI and how they've used the tools within the past six months.
"Today, usage is dominated by these generalist AI systems," such as OpenAI's ChatGPT or Google's Gemini, Menlo Ventures partner Amy Wu Martin told Business Insider. "But we're seeing, starting with specific categories, this move into more specialized apps."
Menlo's research identified five broad categories where specialized AI apps are gaining traction: routine tasks, creative expression, physical and mental health, learning and development, and connection.
Dating, social networking, AI companions, and more
What falls under the connection umbrella?
One niche is dating. Menlo's market map of consumer AI tools highlighted AI-powered matchmaking apps like A16z Speedrun alum Sitch, Keeper, and Ditto. Then there are social networking apps that use AI agents to surface new people to meet, such as Gigi or professional-focused startups like Series or Boardy. Menlo also puts AI companions (think Character AI or Replika) and the turn-yourself-into-a-bot startup Delphi (a Menlo investment) under its connection thesis.
"People are starting to use AI as a bit of a crutch to actually figure out how to interact with people and feel less awkward," Martin said, pointing to examples of how people may use AI to prepare for a date or dinner party.
In addition to dating advice or social coaching, the technology can be a semi-social outlet in itself, enabling users to interact with AI-generated personas.
"The biggest gap in the AI connectivity is multiplayer mode," Martin said, referring to AI that facilitates and participates in group activities.
Social media has largely morphed into entertainment — propelled by the rise of influencers — instead of a place to foster real-life connections. Menlo thinks AI could help bring people together, especially in the still-untapped realm of multiplayer experiences.
"What is the tool that really just helps you be better in your relationships?" Menlo partner Shawn Carolan said. "I don't want more media coming my way. It's almost like the opposite of social media."
But people aren't running en masse to AI for connection just yet.
According to the report, only 14% of participants said they used AI for "staying in touch."
Investors are buzzing about consumer AI
A new crop of startups at the intersection of AI and social networking has stirred buzz with investors.
"We are trying to understand where the puck is going," Martin said. "The next phase, especially consumer, is around these specialized apps."
Menlo Ventures isn't the only firm betting on consumer AI applications.
Amber Atherton, a partner at early-stage consumer fund Patron, recently told BI about wanting to invest in startups that better help people find new relationships and maintain their existing ones.
Beyond connection, Menlo Ventures is also watching spaces like healthcare and wellness, financial management, personalized learning, home-related tasks, and family logistics as opportunities for startups.
Parents, for instance, are AI "power users," according to Menlo's survey.
"Ultimately, consumers are trying to get things done," Martin said.

4 Devices That Offer AI Home Security Monitoring for Free
AI-based home security features offer some of the most useful artificial intelligence. For example, a security camera can spot packages, recognize people, ignore animals, and send targeted smart alerts with descriptions of what's happening. Though many of those features require subscriptions, there are ways to get these AI features for free. If you want your home security to get smarter without the cost, several cams and similar devices offer no-cost AI monitoring. Here are several of my favorite options. Use Google Nest's free AI services Google's Home app makes managing the Nest Doorbell easy, especially if you have other Home devices. Not every smart home brand charges money for AI recognition features. In fact, Google Nest devices like the Nest Doorbell or Nest wireless cam are some of my favorites because they offer both free hours of video storage and free object recognition. When set up, a Nest device can ignore animals and vehicles while giving you alerts about people and packages at no cost. That's especially handy if you want to watch out for porch pirates. If you feel like an eventual upgrade, a Nest Aware subscription can add features like facial recognition and conversational video searches with Gemini. Install a Tapo security cam You get a whole lot for a low price with this Tapo cam. TP-Link Tapo security cameras are one of my go-to suggestions for a cheap cam that still has plenty of security features. You can find one for only $20 that still includes voice assistant support, motion detection and, yes, AI features for person recognition and crying baby detection, depending on how you want to use the cam. With onboard video storage options, there's no need to pay ongoing fees to use this camera. Mount a Lorex outdoor camera Lorex cameras are subscription free and offer object recognition. Lorex/Amazon Lorex specializes in cameras that come with their own microSD cards, so you can get immediate video storage without subscriptions or paying extra. But they have another trick, too: They include AI that can detect a human shape and weed out other motion, so you only get important alerts that matter. Lorex's high-resolution lenses also make it a good pick for outdoor security cameras. Set up a Eufy video smart lock Eufy's new video smart lock pieces on a wood table. Tyler Lacoma/CNET In addition to free onboard video storage, Eufy's cameras also include AI detection that can notice people, animals and packages, and give you alerts based on what you're interested in, without requiring any extra charges. Those features work for many Eufy models, but one of the most innovative is Eufy's latest video smart lock S330, which combines a smart lock and video doorbell into one gadget. Uber salaries revealed: See how much software developers and other tech workers at the ride-hailing company make
Uber wants to be a "super app," and it's hiring people to make it happen. So how much is it paying them? The company is probably best known for the millions of gig workers who pick up and drop off riders or deliver food for Uber Eats. But Uber is looking to expand those services — with self-driving cars, for example — as well as offer customers targeted offers. Last year, it also reportedly considered making a bid for Expedia, though no deal materialized. "We're slowly moving towards a super app of sorts," CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said. Like many tech companies, Uber has taken a more financially cautious approach to its corporate head count over the last few years. But it's still looking for new hires. In early August, Uber had close to 800 open positions listed on its website. Some of the teams with the most open roles included engineering, operations, and sales. Uber filed to hire just under 500 workers through the H-1B visa program in the first half of this reporting year, according to filings with the US Department of Labor. That's more than the roughly 350 filings that Uber made during the same period in 2024. Some of the most common job positions that Uber filed to hire through the program were data scientists, operations research analysts, and software developers. Companies are required to submit this work visa data, which includes salary information, to the US Department of Labor for all foreign hires. However, the compensation figures don't include equity or other benefits that employees can receive in addition to their base pay. The filings also include industry average pay rates for US workers. Here's a look at the jobs that Uber disclosed salaries for: Computer and Information Systems Managers can make up to $360,000 Staff Software Engineer: $225,200 to $258,800 Manager, Engineering: $235,100 to $287,000 Senior Manager: $230,800 to $299,700 Senior Director, Engineering: $360,000 Data Scientists can earn up to $199,400 Scientist, Tech: $111,966 to $174,900 Senior Scientist, Tech: $185,300 to $199,400 Staff Scientist, Tech: $219,400 to $250,000 Applied Scientist: $133,100 to $179,100 Data Scientist: $125,950 to $175,019 Senior Data Scientist: $150,400 to $164,300 Information Technology Project Managers can earn up to $215,900 Product Manager: $158,700 to $197,000 Senior Technical Program Manager: $215,900 Senior Program Manager: $144,500 to $163,600 Operations Research Analysts can make up to $185,300 Scientist, Tech: $149,650 to $174,900 Senior Scientist, Tech: $169,800 to $185,300 Senior Operations and Logistics Manager: $138,650 to $142,850 Manager, Sales Operations: $157,400 Software Developers can make up to $266,400 Software Engineer: $98,516 to $195,300 Software Engineer II: $113,308 to $135,005 Staff Software Engineer: $225,200 to $266,400 Senior Software Engineer: $151,819 to $235,500 Senior Applications Developer: $187,800 to $209,700 abitter@

1 Incredible Artificial Intelligence (AI) Chip Stock to Buy Before It Soars 85% (Hint: Not Nvidia), According to a Select Wall Street Analyst
Key Points GPUs get all of the attention amid booming AI spending, but there are a lot of components that go into data centers. Its valuation and strong balance sheet led one analyst to put a price target with 80% upside on this chipmaker. There are some significant risks with the company, but the long-term trends favor the stock. 10 stocks we like better than Micron Technology › Big tech companies are spending hundreds of billions of dollars on chips and equipment to outfit their growing data centers to continue pushing the potential of generative AI. Total infrastructure spending from the top 10 AI tech companies could climb from $435 billion last year to over $1 trillion by 2028, according to estimates from Dell'Oro. In other words, there's still a lot of room for AI chip stocks to keep growing. Perhaps the most important component of any data center focused on AI training and inference is the GPU cluster. Bigger clusters of more powerful GPUs are capable of training bigger models faster. Nvidia has established itself as the leading GPU maker, and its revenue and profits have skyrocketed as hyperscalers snatch up its chips as fast as it can produce them. But GPU makers aren't the only chipmakers benefiting from the rapid growth in AI spending. There are a lot of different components that go into data centers. As demand continues to grow over the next few years, one chipmaker's stock could climb up to 85% from its price as of this writing through the next 12 months, according to one Wall Street analyst. Here's what investors need to know. Don't forget about this component One of the most expensive parts of building a GPU, which is more than just a piece of silicon these days, is the high-bandwidth memory, or HBM. The most advanced GPUs process tons of data every second. But in order to process that data, the unit must have a way to access the data quickly. Traditional memory components quickly became a bottleneck as the processing power of GPUs increased. As such, demand for HBM chips has exploded alongside the growing demand for the most advanced GPUs. There are only a few chipmakers producing HBM chips. The leader in the market is SK Hynix, which established a strong relationship with Nvidia. But another memory chip maker, Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU), is poised to take share from the market leader. Micron was late to HBM, but now it's ramping up development on its latest generation HBM3E 12H product, which it expects to be its biggest source of HBM shipments in the current quarter. It earned a big design win with Advanced Micro Devices' latest GPU, the MI355X. Analysts expect AMD's latest chip to compete for more share of data center spending against Nvidia, which bodes well for Micron as well. Overall, Micron expects its share of the HBM market to grow to the same level as its total DRAM (general memory chips) market share, about 25%, at some point in the second half of this year. That's pretty rapid progress after starting from a near standstill a few years ago. Importantly, Micron's next-generation HBM4 progress is going well, too, with performance 60% higher than its HBM3E chips with 20% less power consumption. Management says it's delivered samples to customers, and it expects to ramp up volume production next year. The early results are evident in Micron's financials. HBM revenue grew 50% sequentially in its most recent quarter. As a result, total revenue from DRAM sales (of which HBM is a part) climbed 51% year over year. Management expects the ramp in HBM3E to push its gross margin higher this quarter, reaching 42%, up from 39% in its most recent quarter. While HBM is the driving force behind Micron's recent results, it's not the only factor pushing demand for Micron's chips. Device makers are also in need of more traditional memory chips from Micron as it's also an important component for on-device AI capabilities. Everything from PCs and smartphones to automobiles with advanced computing capabilities (like self-driving) need more powerful memory chips. On-device AI capabilities may drive significant smartphone upgrades over the next few years, representing another potential catalyst for Micron. The 80% upside in the stock Micron is making strong progress in the HBM market, and that led Rosenblatt Securities to slap a $200 price target on the stock following its third-quarter earnings report in June. The key factor behind the analyst's Street-high price target, which is an 80% jump from today's price, is the capacity constraints on the market. SK Hynix notably said it had already sold out its entire capacity for 2025 by the end of the first quarter and it expected to finalize its 2026 volume within the first half of the year. "With DRAM wafer capacity expansion over 18 months away, we see this cycle driving Micron's income model to all-time highs," Rosenblatt's Kevin Cassidy wrote in an investor note. He find's Micron's current valuation, less than 14 times forward earnings, as extremely attractive, especially given the strength of its balance sheet and potential earnings leverage. Before investors run out and buy the stock, though, there's an important risk to consider with Micron. It's an extremely cyclical stock. Since it manufactures its chips itself, it has significant capital expenditures for equipment and capacity. A downturn in demand would not only hurt volume but pricing as well, because most of its products aren't very differentiated from SK Hynix or other competitors. That would weigh heavily on earnings. Micron saw a significant shock to its earnings in 2023, as inventory levels rose and demand from China vanished. That said, the strong expected growth in AI spending could provide a huge boost to Micron's revenue and profit margins over the next few years, as long as it's able to maintain leading-edge technology with HBM. That could mean an extended earnings cycle with very strong earnings growth for the next few years. At some point, however, Micron will see a big drop in demand and earnings will severely suffer. But the long-term trends favor growing demand for memory both in data centers and consumer devices and automobiles. As such, Micron is a great value at today's price, especially for investors looking for a way to invest in the growing spending of the hyperscalers without paying up for expensive GPU chipmakers like Nvidia and AMD.
