Police crack 2023 ritual murder after healer allegedly found in possession of the deceased's organs
The 38-year-old man from Mozambique was arrested in Winterveldt on Thursday after he was allegedly found in possession of Makhubela's organs.
Her mutilated, partly burnt and badly decomposed body was found at a refuse dumping site in Elandskraal, Brits, on November 23 2023.
He is the third suspect to be arrested in the case after the earlier arrests of two other men.
Samuel Mlambo, 38, and Serame Moroke, 29, were arrested last Wednesday. Their case was postponed to August 19 for a bail application after their appearance in court on Friday.
In addition to murder, the duo are charged with kidnapping, violation and/or defiling of a corpse and contravention of the Immigration Act.
According to police, Mlambo and Moroke were linked to the murder after officers recovered the deceased's phone.
Police spokesperson Brig Sabata Mokgwabone said it is believed the victim was tricked by Moroke after Mlambo tasked him to find a young woman fitting a particular profile to be murdered so Mlambo could have her organs for muti. He had allegedly consulted the traditional healer.
Mokgwabone said investigations are continuing, with the possibility of more arrests.

One of the three men accused of killing two women and throwing their bodies in a pigsty in Limpopo has been 'discharged' until the trial, where he will be testifying as a state witness. Limpopo pig farmer Zackariah Olivier, his co-accused Rudolph de Wet, and Zimbabwean national William Musoro returned to the Polokwane High Court on Monday. Trial National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Mashudu Malabi told The Citizen the murder case was postponed to 6 to 17 October 2025 for trial. 'Zackariah Olivier and William Musoro have been remanded in custody, while Rudolph de Wet has been discharged. 'In terms of Section 204 [Criminal Procedures Act], we will determine if he tells the truth about what happened. If he is telling the truth, he will be released. If not, he will be remanded back into custody and face trial,' Malabi said. Section 204 of the Criminal Procedure Act of South Africa allows a witness, who may be implicated in a crime, to testify against other accused persons in exchange for potential indemnity from prosecution. Feeding bodies to pigs During the brief proceedings earlier this month, the 20-year-old De Wet, a supervisor on the farm, turned state witness and testified that Olivier shot and killed the two women. De Wet is expected to testify that he was 'under duress' when he was forced to throw their bodies into the pig enclosure, which the animals fed on, according to his lawyer and the state prosecutor. Charges against De Wet are expected to be dropped when he begins his testimony as a state witness. Olivier, De Wet and Musora are facing two counts of murder, attempted murder, defeating the administration of justice, possession of an unlicensed firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition. Musora, who is a Zimbabwean national, faces an additional charge of contravening the Immigration Act. Murder Olivier, De Wet and Musora are accused of killing Maria Makgato and Lucia Ndlovu before dumping their bodies in a pigsty at Onvervaght farm in Sebayeng, outside Polokwane, in August. It is the state's case that Makgato and Ndlovu went to the farm to collect expired food that the pigs were eating. Police crack muti murder case with third arrest
Police arrest third suspect linked to gruesome muti murder of 20-year-old Gontse Makhubela in Winterveldt. A third suspect was arrested at the weekend following the discovery of body parts stuffed in buckets in a backyard in Winterveldt, apparently used for rentals to foreigners. North West police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone confirmed an investigation led the police to Winterveldt, where the third suspect was arrested in possession of the organs of the deceased, Gontse Makhubela, 20. She was reported missing in November 2023. Makhubela's mutilated, partly burnt and decomposed corpse was recovered at a refuse dumpsite in Elandskraal in Brits. 'The third suspect, also a traditional healer from Mozambique, will appear in the Garankuwa Magistrate's Court. There may be more arrests,' he said. Limited deterrent actions against muti killings Rural criminologist Dr Witness Maluleke said these are well-organised and orchestrated crime practices, characterised by the collusion of South Africans and foreigners. Officers raided an illegal mining site in the Marathon informal settlement, intercepting the suspects in possession of mining equipment.
