The head of the IOM mission in Yemen, Abdul Satar Isoyev, explained that the boat, which was carrying 154 Ethiopian migrants, capsized during its journey in the Gulf of Aden, indicating that only about 12 people survived, according to the Associated Press.
Isoyev added that the waves washed 54 bodies to the shore in Khanfar area of Abyan, while 14 other bodies were recovered in separate locations and transferred to Zunjbar Hospital.
Medical sources in Abyan reported that local authorities are burying the victims in a cemetery near the coastal city of Shaqra, while search operations are still ongoing amid difficult sea conditions.
Gangs smuggling African migrants to the Yemeni coast are active in Abyan and Shabwa, which are under the control of UAE-funded factions, amid accusations that faction leaders receive exorbitant sums of money from the gangs in exchange for disembarking migrants on the Yemeni coast.
According to the International Organization for Migration, 558 migrants drowned on this sea route in 2024, while over the past decade, at least 2,082 people were reported missing, including 693 who drowned.

Palestinian al-Ahrar Movement: Zionist statements about deliberate killing of 50,000 Palestinians admission of premeditated genocide
Gaza – Saba: The Palestinian al-Ahrar Movement considered on Sunday, what was published by the head of Zionist intelligence, Aharon Haliva, about the deliberate killing of 50,000 Palestinians, an official and explicit admission of a planned and premeditated genocide. The movement said that the arrogance of the Zionist enemy authorities and the crimes of its leaders come with direct American support, amid shameful international, Arab, and Islamic silence that reflects double standards. It added: "The United Nations, as the guardian of international peace and security, must act objectively regarding the act criminalized by international texts, rather than from the perspective of the powerful perpetrator and double standards, and act after this admission." The movement called on the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court to file criminal cases, implement orders to prosecute leaders of the Zionist enemy, and ensure they do not escape punishment.

The Observatory noted that Al-Ghoul has witnessed multiple similar incidents in recent years, including one that killed Intisar's mother in a previous landmine blast. Al Bayda is among several Yemeni governorates severely affected by landmines allegedly planted by the Houthi militia along roads, in farmland, and near civilian areas. Over the past decade, the widespread use of anti-personnel and anti-vehicle mines has resulted in thousands of civilian casualties, many of them women and children.
