Origins of Irish surnames explored in new television series
A NEW television series will explore the origins of some of the most common surnames in Ireland.
TG4 have confirmed a new series of Sloinne – which means 'surname' in Irish - will follow a number of Irish people as they go in search of the history of their surname.
The show takes viewers across Ireland to find the clans and the heritage associated with the names.

Surnames Mac Gearailt/FitzGerald, Ó Briain/O'Brien, Ó Néill/O'Neill, De Paor/Power, Ó Loingsigh/Lynch and Ó Gallachóir/Gallagher will be the focus of the new series, TG4 have confirmed.
In the first episode the Mac Gearailt surname, which is Fitzgerald in English, focuses on the Limerick region where Galway-based lecturer Rónán Mac Gearailt delves into his father's background and stronghold of the surname in that surrounding area.
The retired schoolteacher and storyteller Paddy O'Brien spends time in county Clare, at the O'Brien's tower, the Cliffs of Moher and Dromoland Castle, while Yvonne Ní Chatháin from Galway visits Northern Ireland in search of some of the history on the Ó Catháin/Keane surname.

The series later finds itself in Galway to look at the history behind the Lynch surname, which is one of the city's famous tribes.
Actor Pádraig Ó Loingsigh, who is currently starring as Brendan Behan in Moonlight: The Philip Lynott Enigma, returned to Ireland from the UK for this episode.
John Gallagher, a lecturer in Leeds, also made his way to Ireland for the series.
His research into the Ó Gallachóir/Gallagher surname took him from Dublin to his father's homestead in Gaoth Dobhair, County Donegal.
The series, produced by Abú Media, airs on TG4 on Sundays at 8.30pm from May 11 and will be available to view globally on TG4 Player.

Clarkson's Farm star shares major health update as series ends on emotional note
Fans who have tuned into the latest series of Clarkson's Farm will be familiar with Alan Townsend. The handyman has helped Jeremy Clarkson find his new pub. He was tasked with working alongside the former Top Gear host to transform the watering hole into the Farmer's Dog and have it ready for the August Bank Holiday. However, during the finale, Alan revealed he was facing a heart operation. At the end of episode eight, Alan confided in Clarkson, his Irish partner Lisa Hogan, Charlie Ireland, Gerald Cooper, Kaleb Cooper, and Annie Gray. The team gathered around a table following a chaotic day, where they managed to meet a tight deadline, and Alan opened up about his health operation. "Yeah, we're in next Tuesday at the hospital. Quadruple bypass coming," the builder said. "And they've got to test for stroke likelihood as well," Jeremy said, to which Alan added, "Yeah, because I had that stroke." Speaking about fellow star Gerald overcoming prostate cancer, Jeremy remarked, "You know, last year. It was him [Gerald], wasn't it? You'd gotten yourself better. So we're ending this year, with our fingers crossed." Keeping a positive attitude, Alan said, "Yeah, well, it should... It's pretty routine these days, isn't it?" Alan then added, "Oh, frightened to death. I don't even like thinking about it. "That's why I keep going to work, keep out of the way. They told me to really just take it easy and stay at home. But if you stay, you'll be worrying to death about it." Jeremy lightened the mood and raised a glass, saying: "We couldn't have gotten the pub open without you. We'll name a wing after you. I'm not saying if it goes wrong, we'll name a wing after you, we'll name a wing after you anyway. The Alan Townsend Wing." Gerald then got everyone laughing and said: "I've got a foot pump, I'll bring him around, don't you worry... If he starts deflating, I'll pump him back up." Festival Folk 1985
The Chieftains live at the National Stadium in Dublin. Irish traditional music from The Chieftains, performing 'Here I Am Amongst You' recorded at the National Stadium in September 1984. Launching on Monday, 9 June 2025 across RTÉjr, RTÉ2 and the RTÉ Player, Sparks – School's Out is a magnificent collection of seven short original Irish animations, each offering a unique take on the end of the school term.
