Behind the music - Abigail Hawk, star of BadaBoom

BadaBoom, "the world's first hybrid e-gaming /storytelling live experience, takes place In the Civic Theatre, Tallaght, Dublin on 28 August. We asked actress Abigail Hawk, who stars in the show, the BIG questions . . . Starring Abigail, from TV drama Blue Bloods, and Peter M Smith. from Moonlight: The Philip Lynott Enigma. BadaBoom tells the story of Frankie Caruso, a hitman, who has spent his life in the shadows but when he begins recounting his past to Eliza Vale, a biographer, "the facade he has carefully constructed begins to crack". However, the audience doesn't just watch - they use their mobile phones to take part in the action. As the story unfolds, "they will be immersed in a thrilling, interactive spectacle where every twist and turn is determined by the players in the audience". Tell us three things about yourself . . . I hate mushrooms but love truffle oil. I have broken my tail bone twice. I am writing a historical fiction novel based on the life and death of Mary Pearcey. You've been involved with musicals all your life. What are your favourites and how would you describe your musical taste? Yes, since I was six. First production was The Sound of Music. I was Gretl. Favourites include Les Mis, Sweeney Todd, The Book of Mormon, Hamilton, Waitress, Phantom of the Opera, Anything Goes. I would describe my musical taste the way I describe myself: eclectic. How would you describe your musical taste? Yes! Current wants are to play King George in Hamilton. That's right. King George. And to play Roxy Hart in Chicago with Gregory Jbara as Billy Flynn and Robert Clohessy as the tragic Amos. What was the first gig you ever went to? First time I fell in love with concerts was a Guster show when I was in college. What was the first record you ever bought? Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill. And the musical Rent. Same purchase with my allowance. Also bought a choker necklace and shopped for belly button rings for a piercing I didn't have (I was 15) What's your favourite song right now? Anything Teddy Swims sings turns to gold for me. Favourite lyric of all time? Sara Bareilles has a way with words that haunts my marrow. I'm also such a sucker for sad songs. They just cut through all the noise and go right to the quick of being human. But if I had to pick, knowing all I know now: "Blackbird singing in the dead of night, take these broken wings and learn to fly. All your life, you were only waiting for this moment to arise" - Blackbird by The Beatles. If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be? Two Points for Honesty by Guster. Eva Cassidy singing Fields of Gold is right up there, too. Instagram is the most immediate place to start @hawkabigail. IMDB Abigail Hawk has up to date career stuff.

Brian Kennedy to play Oscar Wilde in Phil Lynott stage musical

Belfast singer Brian Kennedy says he is "beyond thrilled" to be joining rock-theatre show Moonlight: The Philip Lynott Enigma to play the role of Irish wit and playwright Oscar Wilde. The production, which opened in Dublin's Vicar Street in April, tells the story of the late Thin Lizzy front man and is set to return to Vicar Steet on 20 and 21 and has also announced a show in UCH Limerick on 24 June. Dublin actor Peter M. Smith plays Lynott in Moonlight, which charts the early life of Lynott, portraying him not just as a rock legend but as a literary figure worthy of standing alongside Wilde and Brendan Behan, both of whom make ghostly appearances in the musical. The show blends live music, including Thin Lizzy classics and original compositions, with theatrical storytelling to explore Lynott's formative years in Dublin and London during the late 1960s and early '70s. Speaking about playing Wilde in the show, Kennedy, whose songs include Captured and You Raise Me Up, says: "I'm beyond thrilled to be part of Moonlight and of course to bring something new to the legend of Oscar! I feel like I have finally met Phil Lynott and Brendan Behan."

Origins of Irish surnames explored in new television series

A NEW television series will explore the origins of some of the most common surnames in Ireland. TG4 have confirmed a new series of Sloinne – which means 'surname' in Irish - will follow a number of Irish people as they go in search of the history of their surname. The show takes viewers across Ireland to find the clans and the heritage associated with the names. Ruth McMahon pictured at the Edna O'Brien Library Surnames Mac Gearailt/FitzGerald, Ó Briain/O'Brien, Ó Néill/O'Neill, De Paor/Power, Ó Loingsigh/Lynch and Ó Gallachóir/Gallagher will be the focus of the new series, TG4 have confirmed. In the first episode the Mac Gearailt surname, which is Fitzgerald in English, focuses on the Limerick region where Galway-based lecturer Rónán Mac Gearailt delves into his father's background and stronghold of the surname in that surrounding area. The retired schoolteacher and storyteller Paddy O'Brien spends time in county Clare, at the O'Brien's tower, the Cliffs of Moher and Dromoland Castle, while Yvonne Ní Chatháin from Galway visits Northern Ireland in search of some of the history on the Ó Catháin/Keane surname. John Gallagher picture with Marie Campbell in Gaoth Dobhair The series later finds itself in Galway to look at the history behind the Lynch surname, which is one of the city's famous tribes. Actor Pádraig Ó Loingsigh, who is currently starring as Brendan Behan in Moonlight: The Philip Lynott Enigma, returned to Ireland from the UK for this episode. John Gallagher, a lecturer in Leeds, also made his way to Ireland for the series. His research into the Ó Gallachóir/Gallagher surname took him from Dublin to his father's homestead in Gaoth Dobhair, County Donegal. The series, produced by Abú Media, airs on TG4 on Sundays at 8.30pm from May 11 and will be available to view globally on TG4 Player. See More: Irish Surnames, Sloinne, TG4
